Software Options
1. Go to the [Display] menu and choose [Option: Display] to call up the Display properties dialog.
2. A dialog box appears and allows you to select geographic parameters under three pull down menus :
Heading display
1. If you wish that the headings are indicated by the software in geographical mode, check Geographic heading
box (T is displayed against the heading field in the Cursor Data palette).
2. If you wish that the headings are indicated as magnetic headings check the Magnetic heading box (Mg is
displayed against the heading field in the Cursor Data palette).
Note:
1. True (or geographic) headings use the geographic North pole as the reference point and refer to the north
maritime chart.
2. Magnetic headings reference the magnetic North pole (this value is constantly moving very slowly) so you
have to apply a correction factor to compensate for this offset.(see the following MaxSea World
magnetic chart reference)
3. Compass heading is that which is indicated on steering compass. Most GPS give the option of outputting
geographic or magnetic heading.
Magnetic variation
1. Check the Manual radio button from the Magnetic variation zone and then use the keys (+ ) and (-) to enter
the present declination on your navigation region, from the 0°(East ).
Note:
11
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
MaxSea refers to a world Magnetic chart reference to apply correction. This refers to Epoch 2000 declination -
Main field(D) references.
The World magnetic chart shown above is the magnetic variation reference in MaxSea ( chart not available
in MaxSea )
The deviation (or the boat influence) is the error of your steering compass, this is the affect of magnetic items near your
compass ( for example iron), this will affect the headings of your boat.
Choose the different deviation values for each ship heading. Take care to use the correct direction for the curve (East or
West).
MaxSea allows you to input your deviation corrections on a permanent basis. this can be done in two ways:
1. directly from the curve, left-click a point from the curve and move according to the correction value.
2. or enter your magnetic deviation directly in a cell of the table and choose the geographic direction (East or
West), left click in the cell and choose the direction from the pull-down menu.
IMPORTANT
If you have chosen Compass heading mode the software displays all the headings taking into account the variation
(declination and deviation). However, deviation is not applied when the bearing lines are plotted using the Bearing tool
(see chapter Bearings In effect these are generally taken using a bearing compass which is not affected by the deviation
(only the correction due to declination is brought to bearing values).
12
Software Options
• A graph is drawn in the upper of the window and represents the average of your boat fuel consumption.
• The tab in the lower part of the window allows to add a specific consumption value according to the speed.
2. To change the value click in the desired cell and then enter directly the value.
Note: three values are defined by default (lower, middle and higher)

deep waters. In addition, it reduces surface noise.
Not :if the TVG level is set too high short range echoes may not
be displayed.

An installed catalog allows you to use several regions at the same time, even if you have only one CD-ROM drive.
As a hard drive is much faster than a CD-ROM drive, using an installed catalog will increase the speed of chart
manipulations (opening, scrolling).
With an installed catalog, you can work without your BSB CD-ROM. All the charts are kept inside your computer, and your
CD-ROM drive is free for other uses.
To install a BSB chart catalog on your hard disk, you will have to use the windows explorer.
1. First, make sure that your hard drive has enough free memory to contain the whole CD-ROM.
2. Insert the BSB4 CD in your drive and start the registration process by clicking " Register Chart CD".
3. Once the registration process is done, create a new folder in "My Documents" and name it "Maptech"
4. Open the CD and locate the folder that contains Maptech charts (generally a list of "*.bsb" and "*.cap files).
5. Select each files in the folder and copy all of them in the "Maptech" folder previously created in "My
Documents".
6. when charts are copied , open Maxsea and choose the [Open Charts] option from the [File] menu.
Note: MaxSea is also compatible with the coastal Navigation Photos. Just make another folder in "My
Documents" and copy the "NavPhoto" folder.
To display detailed charts in your area of interest, you will have to install specific BSB charts. MaxSea will then
automatically display the best charts for the scale that you select. Note that MaxSea uses a powerful algorithm that joins
all of the charts on the screen for automatic, seamless coverage.
You can install the free NOAA raster chart Using the NOAA BSB DVD (recommended) or by Downloading them
manually on NOAA Web Site.

Dongle failure remains after verifying the HARDWARE CONNECTION, in this case you will have to choose this
option. Be careful, this action can only be done once and it is only available during FOUR DAYS. Please, contact
your dealer if you need a longer rescue period.
If you are already running a version of MaxSea, follow these instructions to upgrade your software.

Installation & configuration
It is strongly recommended that you backup your MY DOCUMENTS folder on a regular basis - and especially before
upgrading. PC's often include a built-in CD-burner (CDR drive). This is probably the most convenient way to backup
your data.
Files which store any tracks and marks as well as logbook data are found in "MY DOCUMENTS | My MaxSea"
repertory. Exclude your charts from the files chosen to backup. Charts typically take up a lot of space, and can be
restored if necessary from their installation CD.
Select ADD/REMOVE programs from the Windows Control Panel found under "START | SETTINGS" menu.
Select the MaxSea entry and click on the CHANGE/REMOVE button. Follow the instructions on the screen
to remove the software.
IMPORTANT - If your previous version worked with a software license, you must install the new version in
the same folder. Never manually delete the "MaxSea" folder.
• If the installation screen does not appear, open up “My Computer” and right click on your CD-ROM
drive, then select Auto Run from the menu.
• Click on Installation, choose your language, and follow the instructions on the screen.
• Select Remove and click Next and follow the instructions on screen.
1. If your computer is connected to Internet, the configuration codes will be automatically downloaded and
installed using the "ConfigurationCodes Internet” process.
2. If your computer is not connected to Internet, "Error 203" appears and warns you that Internet connection
has failed. Message asks for searching the (*.mxconfig) file that was given by your dealer or sent by email.
Note: On rare occasions, MaxSea could detect that the Hardware key and software do not match. In this case,
you must launch the DongleUpdate program via the following procedure:
3. Click on “Programs”.

the previous topic: Installing the Software
Connecting Equipment
However many GPS manufactures do not provide a cable that will connect directly to the computer. If this is the case, you
will need make your own cable. To connect to the GPS, you must acquire a data cable from your GPS manufacturer and
connect a DB9 connector to the other end.
Most PCs on the market use a standard 9 pin male RS232 serial port. Connect the cable from your GPS to the COM1
port.
67
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
IMPORTANT:
Serial port :
• If your computer has no serial port, you may install an internal PCI board, a PC-Card (PCMCIA)
or a USB to serial adapter.
• Note that older systems may have a male 25 PIN DB25 serial port. Don't confuse this with the
parallel (printer) port, which has a 25 pin female connector.
• In order to ensure accuracy, check that your GPS receiver is properly configured to match
geodesy of your electronic charts (usually WGS84).

(2) - Choose Heading from instrument as the Master for the latitude and longitude because this value will be
used for the chart display orientation, GPS symbol display on the chart,etc...
The Baud rate is defined during the instrument installation (see Adding Instruments), but can be changed
here if necessary.
Checksum
The NMEA 0183 Standard allows for an optional checksum. The checksum is preceded by the asterisk (*)
character placed after the last data field. It is a special two-character representation which verifies the
character bytes of the sentence.
(Checksums are like person one giving person two a list of 100 numbers. To verify that all the numbers were
received correctly, person number two replies with the sum of the numbers. If the sum of the 100 number is
correct, it is assumed that all of the information was correctly transmitted.)
If you prefer to ignore checksum errors, then select "Ignore sentences with checksum errors" from
Miscellaneous column.

IMPORTANT
Serial communication using RS-232 requires similar parameters between instrument and serial port configuration (baud
rate of the transmission, the number of data bits encoding a character, the sense of the optional parity bit, the number of
stop bits).
NMEA 0183 devices employ an asynchronous serial interface with the following parameters:
75
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
- Data Bits 8
- Parity None
All NMEA 0183 messages start with a "$" and are terminated by a [Carriage Return][Line Feed]. The five characters
immediately after the "$" are the address field. The address field is interpreted based on the type of sentence (talker,
query or proprietary). Multiple data fields follow the address field and are delimited by commas.
The address field of a talker sentence contains a five character string immediately following the "$" sign.
- the next three are the sentence identifier. The sentence identifier defines the remaining data fields.
Under the NMEA 0183 Standard, the data fields are uniquely defined for each sentence type.
Latitude and Longitude of present vessel position, time of position fix and status.
$GPGLL,5133.81,N,00042.25,W
2 N North/South
4 W East/West
Note: the Display button offers the possibility to keep the information scrolling or to stop the display (the sentence
processing continues even if the display is stopped).
- the electronic equipment is not or is badly connected (for example, earth wire and signal wire reversed). See Cable
diagram, as well as the technical manual for the connected equipment,
- the electronic equipment is not configured correctly (data transmission to the serial port is not activated or is activated
with a transmission frequency which is too slow). Refer to the technical manual for the connected equipment,
- the electronic equipment format is different from that which is specified in MaxSea (for example, CIF instead of NMEA
183, etc.): modify the format in order to ensure coherence between connected electronic equipment and MaxSea (see
above paragraphs).

How to configure :
Specifies whether the CTS signal is monitored for output flow control. If this member is TRUE and CTS is turned
off, output is suspended until CTS is sent again.
78
Installation & configuration
Specifies whether the DSR signal is monitored for output flow control. If this member is TRUE and DSR is
turned off, output is suspended until DSR is sent again.
o DSR Sensitivity
Specifies whether the communications driver is sensitive to the state of the DSR signal. If this member is TRUE,
the driver ignores any bytes received, unless the DSR modem input line is high.
Specifies the DTR flow control. This member can be one of the following values :
Disable Î Disables the DTR line when the device is opened and leaves it disabled.
Enable Î Enables the DTR line when the device is opened and leaves it on
Specifies the RTS flow control. This member can be one of the following values.
o Disable Î Disables the RTS line when the device is opened and leaves it disabled.
o Enable Î Enables the RTS line when the device is opened and leaves it on.
o Handshake Î Enables RTS handshaking. The driver raises the RTS line when the "type-ahead"
(input) buffer is less than one-half full and lowers the RTS line when the buffer is more than three-
quarters full.
o Toggle Î Specifies that the RTS line will be high if bytes are available for transmission. After all
buffered bytes have been sent, the RTS line will be low
• PARITY
Specifies whether parity checking is enabled. If this member is TRUE, parity checking is performed and errors
are reported.
o Parity
Specifies the parity scheme to be used. This member can be one of the following values.
o Even
o Mark
o No Parity
o Odd
o Space
• ERRORS
79
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
o Specifies whether bytes received with parity errors are replaced with the character specified by
the ErrorChar member. If this member is TRUE and the Parity member is TRUE, replacement
occurs.
o Error Replacement character
o Specifies the value of the character used to replace bytes received with a parity error.
o Abort on error
o Specifies whether read and write operations are terminated if an error occurs. If this member is
TRUE, the driver terminates all read and write operations with an error status if an error occurs.
• Xon / Xoff
Specifies whether XON/XOFF flow control is used during transmission. If this member is TRUE,
transmission stops when the XoffChar character is received and starts again when the XonChar
character is received.
o Xon / Xoff in flow control
Specifies whether XON/XOFF flow control is used during reception. If this member is TRUE, the
XoffChar character is sent when the input buffer comes within XoffLim bytes of being full, and the
XonChar character is sent when the input buffer comes within XonLim bytes of being empty.
o Continue TX on error
Specifies whether transmission stops when the input buffer is full and the driver has transmitted the
XoffChar character. If this member is TRUE, transmission continues after the input buffer has come
within XoffLim bytes of being full and the driver has transmitted the XoffChar character to stop
receiving bytes. If this member is FALSE, transmission does not continue until the input buffer is
within XonLim bytes of being empty and the driver has transmitted the XonChar character to
resume reception.
Specifies the value of the XOFF character for both transmission and reception.
o Transmit XON threshold
Specifies the minimum number of bytes allowed in the input buffer before flow control is activated to
inhibit the sender. Note that the sender may transmit characters after the flow control signal has
been activated, so this value should never be zero. This assumes that either XON/XOFF, RTS, or
DTR input flow control is specified in fInX, fRtsControl, or fDtrControl.
o Transmit XOFF threshold
Specifies the maximum number of bytes allowed in the input buffer before flow control is activated
to allow transmission by the sender. This assumes that either XON/XOFF, RTS, or DTR input flow
control is specified in fInX,fRtsControl, or fDtrControl. The maximum number of bytes allowed is
calculated by subtracting this value from the size, in bytes, of the input buffer.
• OTHERS
o Stop bits
Specifies the number of stop bits to be used. This member can be one of the following values.
- 1 Stop bit
- 1.5 Stop Bits
- 2 Stop bits
o Byte size
Specifies the number of bits in the bytes transmitted and received.

Geodetic datum
Electronic charts and GPS receivers generally use WGS 84 Geodetic Datum.
81
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
Meanwhile, if the charts are for example in Europe 50 geodesy and if your GPS does not recognize this geodesy or can
not be modified for whatever reason, call up the Utilities menu and select With datum transformation.
Then, thanks to the corresponding menus, select the geodesy of the positioning device and the geodesy of the chart.
Note: as far as is possible, match the geodesy of your GPS receiver to that of your chart to avoid having different
positions displayed on the GPS receiver and in MaxSea.
Echo
Repeat (without any process) all information arriving on a port, on this same port.
This ratio is useful if in your Input-Output configuration, the speed and heading data are not selected on the master
instrument for the position
The speed and heading data are essential for MaxSea working; so, it is necessary to computerize them (from the
positions) when the master GPS receiver no longer supplies them.
It is recommended to leave this computing to be made as often as possible (every position = 1) and to increase the ratio
according to the lack of precision of your master GPS receiver.

Backup
Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you verify your configuration before backing it up. You risk writing over your
backup with an invalid configuration otherwise.
CAUTION
The backup configuration can not be changed .If you try to do a new backup an information dialog box is displayed saying
: "The configuration has already been backed up, and cannot be erased. Contact you dealer if you really want to backup
again."
Restore
You can restore the configuration previously saved at any time by clicking on the Restore button.
IMPORTANT The current configuration will be permanently replaced by the Backup configuration.
Note : Restoration of the default configuration is possible even if you erase your Input/Output preferences. (CTRL key
during MaxSea's launch)
Meanwhile, you will find information to directly link electronic equipment to your computer.
The serial ports on your computer, as well as those of the internal PCI board, comply with RS 232 type electrical
characteristics; a standard generally used in marine electronics by most existing GPS receivers and equipment.
84
Installation & configuration
Consequently, the connection of a GPS receiver to the computer is generally limited to a 2-wire connection with a NMEA
183 output from the GPS receiver ( GPS ) to input (RxD) and ground (Gnd) pins of the computer.
IMPORTANT If your electronic equipment comply to RS 422 type electrical characteristics, you cannot use the following
process; please contact your dealer. Nearly all manufacturers adhere to the RS 232 standard.
5 Ground Gnd
7 Ground Gnd
85
MaxSea Installation Manual version 12.6
Take the example of a GPS connected in parallel to a computer and a radar. The simple fact of connecting the GPS to the
radar and the computer can disturb output signals (mass reference different between the 3 devices). An extraneous
current may result which prevents correct reading of NMEA chains on the computer.
Temporary solution
Connect only the TxD equipment wire and not the Gnd (Ground) wire to the computer’s serial port.
Permanent solution
First, isolate the computers power supply using a converter with galvanic isolation (isolation of the negative pole of the
battery with the reference mass of the computer).
Then opto-couple serial links between the computer and all connected electronic equipment (contact your dealer).
An opto-isolator, also known as an optical coupler or optocoupler, is a semiconductor device that allows signals to be
transferred between circuits or systems, while keeping those circuits or systems electrically isolated from each other.

4. You must give each radar a unique / different number (for Example “RADAR1”). Once the radar number has
been changed, the radar must be powered down / up to store the new setting. You may also want to set-up the
Radar Antenna Position (5). If you have another radar on the same network, follow the same instructions and
give a different name to the Radar (Example “RADAR2”). You cannot have 2 radars on the same network with
the same name.
Whenever you make a network change, it is recommended to restart all of the Radars.
To confirm the network settings and communications between the radars, power up all of the radars in the network, then
right click on the Radar Antenna box (top left corner). The antenna information for all of the available radars in a network
will appear on the right in the menu panel. Be sure that all the radars on the network are listed in this panel. If not, you
may want to check the cable and the network settings.
3. Select “ARP Preset” (6). Select “True” for “TTM Output” (2)
4. Select “Back” to return to the “Initialize” menu and select “Other” (8).
115

Then you will have to give an IP address to the computer (usually 172.31.3.150). This IP must be unique and not already
taken by another Radar display.
See related topic to read more on How to set up the Computer's IP Address.
Note that if you have only one radar on the Network put the same radar hostname in Radar Source and Radar
Source 2.
FURUNO Radars (FAR21x7 series ) provide ARPA and AIS (transponder unit is required) function as a standard.
You can repeat following steps to also configure MaxSea to receive AIS information. You will just have to choose the
NavNet AIS Data Norm instead NavNet ARPA.
116
Installation & configuration
Note: If you have 2 radars and acquire ARPA on both, MaxSea will display and update the ARPA target of the
Radar displayed in MaxSea.
If you switch radars, you will loose the targets of the previous Radar and Display the Targets of the new radar. Note that
you can set-up the Timeout in MaxSea.
