Introduction: Basic Idea of Smart Antenna, Benefits of Smart Antenna System, Emerging fields
of Smart Antennas, Early Forms of Spatial Processing.
Array Fundamentals: Array Weighting-Blackman weights, Hamming Weights, Gaussian
Weights, Kaiser Bessel Weights. Fixed Beam Arrays, Fixed Sidelobe Cancelling, Retrodirective
Arrays.
UNIT II
Principles of Random Variables and Process: Definition of Random Variables, Probability
Density Functions, Expectation and Moments, Common Probability Density Functions,
Stationarity and Ergodicity, Autocorrelation and Power Spectral Density, Correlation Matrix.
Smart Antennas: Introduction, The Historical Development of Smart Antennas, Fixed Weight
Beamforming Basics: Maximum S/I Ratio, Minimum Mean Square Error, Maximum Likelihood,
and Minimum Variance. Diversity, Secrorization.
UNIT III
Adaptive Beamforming: Least Mean Squares (LMS), Sample Matrix Inversion (SMI),
Recursive Least Squares (RLS), Constant Modulus (CM), Least Squares Constant Modulus,
Conjugate Gradient (CG) Method, Spreading Sequence Array Weights, Description of the new
SDMA receiver.
Angle of Arrival Estimation-I: Fundamentals of Matrix Algebra, Array Correlation Matrix,
Non-Blind Beamforming, Blind Beam Forming, Angle of Arrival Estimation Methods: Bartlett
AOA Estimate, Capon AOA Estimate, Linear Prediction AOA Estimate,
UNIT IV
Angle of Arrival Estimation-II: Maximum Entropy Angle of Arrival Estimate, Pisarenko
Harmonic decomposition AOA Estimate, Min-Norm AOA Estimate, MUSIC AOA Estimate,

Smart Antenna Performance: Beamforming Array Performance, Receive Diversity

ADVANCED ANTENNA THEORY


Unit-I
Fundamentals of Antennas: Introduction, historical advancements, types, radiation mechanism,
review of fundamental parameters radiation pattern, power density, radiation intensity,
directivity, gain, beam width, band width, efficiency, polarization, impedance, effective height,
equivalent areas, Friis transmission equation, vector potential for electric current source and
magnetic current source.
Unit-II
Linear Arrays: N-Element linear arrays for uniform and non-uniform amplitude excitations, design
considerations, array factor expressions. Mutual coupling in arrays.

Two-dimensional Arrays: Rectangular and Circular arrays: array factor, beam width, directivity
and design considerations.
Unit-III
Microstrip Antennas: Basic characteristics of microstrip antennas, Feeding methods-probe
coupling, proximity coupling, aperture coupling. Rectangular patch- transmission line model,
design. Circular patch antennas-electric and magnetic fields, resonant frequencies, design.
Unit-IV:
Antenna synthesis and Continuous Sources: Introduction, continuous sources, line-source,
discretization of continuous sources, Schelkunoff polynomial method, Fourier transform method:
line source, linear array. Wood ward Lawson method: line source, linear array. Taylor linesource (Tschebyscheff error): design procedure.
Antenna Measurements: Introduction, antenna ranges- reflection ranges, free space ranges,
compact ranges, near field/ far field methods. Radiation pattern measurement, Gain
measurements- absolute gain measurements, gain transfer measurements, Directivity
measurement, radiation efficiency and impedance measurements.
