Dear Chancellor Doug Kristensen:
Whereas the University of Nebraska Kearney is committed to preparing all students to lead responsible
and productive lives in a democratic, multicultural society, we the undersigned faculty, staff, students and
greater Kearney community urge the University to affirmatively stand with immigrants who study, live, and
work at the University of Nebraska Kearney (UNK) by adopting a public, written policy communicating the
following protections:
- UNK refuses all voluntary information sharing with ICE/CBP across all aspects of the university to the
fullest extent possible under the law. This position is fully in line with the long cherished principles of the
U.S. Constitution.
- UNK prohibits campus security from inquiring about or recording as to an individuals immigration status
or enforcing immigration laws or participating with ICE/CBP in actions.
- UNK will support undocumented and DACA students equal access to in-state tuition, financial aid, and
scholarships and will support the ability of qualified immigrant students to enroll and sustain their
attendance, including by doing everything within our power to use institutional funds and scholarships to
fill any gap created by discriminatory laws that exclude immigrant students from paying the in-state rate or
accessing ordinary financial aid and scholarships on equal footing with other students.
- This policy shall be enforced by all university staff and all contractors and subcontractors and their
employees working on property owned or controlled by the university.
- UNK commits to ongoing dialogue with the faculty about additions to the university policy and support
for community efforts that protect immigrants who study, live, and work at UNK and their families and the
community.
Our active support of our most vulnerable members will demonstrate UNK's commitment to defend our
values of democratic inclusion and anti-discrimination. This will also allow UNK to join the scores of
universities across the U.S. that have made similar commitments to these values. Finally, it may also give
comfort to those, especially within the UNK community, who are frightened and unsure about their future
and safety.
We thank you for your consideration.
