Statement From Senate Democratic Leader Andrea StewartCousins

President Trumps nomination of Neil Gorsuch to serve on the United States Supreme Court
reinforces the need for our state to take immediate action to protect womens rights. We must
ensure that no matter what happens on the federal level, womens rights will remain protected in
New York State. We are facing an unprecedented attack on womens rights and this will only
continue under a Trump Presidency.
New York State took a leadership role in the fight for women's rights when, in 1970, 12
Republican Senators joined with their Democratic colleagues to declare to the nation that
womens reproductive health care rights must be protected. The time has come for New York to
again serve as an example and protect women's rights.
