Running Head: Settlement

Butler 2

In the heart of Europe, just east of Germany, there is a country called Poland, which is the
ninth largest in all of Europe. Poland was the first country in Europe with a constitution, in 1791,
and has been fighting for their freedom since 1600, having been invaded around 43 times.
Polands earliest settlers were western slav migrants who established their land in the early
middle ages.
During the early middle ages some of Polands greatest agriculture was millet, wheat, and
rye. This is what a lot of the people there ate, along with the meat from farm animals, and some
local fruits, herbs, and spices. It was also very common to drink a beer often in Poland, during
this time. Poland had close trade relations with countries of the Orient, so they got a pretty good
deal on the spices they desired (tastingpoland).
Polands land is a
combination of different
terrains. There are lakes
and rivers, forest and
broad plains, and tall
mountains. This could
have been appealing to
early settlers because of
the ability to grow crops
on the terrain, and to have a steady water supply from the rivers, and be able to use the resources
from the forest to build.
