that was to become one of the worlds best known icons of
luxury: the Montblanc Meisterstck. Its timeless, functional
design, innovative ink supply and hand-profiled gold nib

Ever since 1924, the Meisterstck has presented

draws its inspiration from the spirit of the Meisterstck.
With design, sophisticated complications and sumptuous
decoration, these elegant timepieces embody this spirit of
the Montblanc Meisterstck and pay tribute to the codes
of traditional Swiss fine watchmaking in every detail,
aiming to make each timepiece a lifelong companion for
its owner.
The marriage of tradition and innovation is particularly characteristic of the latest timepieces from Montblanc.
Thus, with the ExoTourbillon Rattrapante from the
Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858, Montblanc presents a
timepiece that is unique in the world of haute horlogerie.
As a world premiere, it combines Montblancs first patented
ExoTourbillon whose large balance-wheel oscillates
outside the tourbillon cage with a split-seconds chronograph. Respect for the chronograph tradition at the
Montblanc Manufacture in Le Locle is expressed in the
new Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Collection, Homage
to Nicolas Rieussec, which also honors the inventor of
the worlds first patented chronograph.
The TimeWalker Chronograph 100 brings together
the dynamic TimeWalker design with innovative materials
and a patented and very special complication. The Manufacture Caliber
, made in the Manufacture in
Villeret and finished by hand, is capable of measuring time

Montblanc watches embody the tradition and knowledge
of 156 years of uninterrupted Swiss watchmaking heritage.
These precious timepieces, including their in-house calibers,
are conceived and crafted in the Montblanc Manufactures
in Villeret and Le Locle.
The history of the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret
goes back to 1858, when it was founded under the name
of Minerva. The Manufacture rapidly built a reputation
as a maker of sophisticated chronograph mechanisms and
developed avant-garde concepts in watchmaking. For
example, Minerva produced one of the fi rst chronograph
calibers for wristwatches, and in 1936 developed a mechanical stopwatch capable of measuring time to the nearest
hundredth of a second. To this day, the timepieces of the
Villeret 1858 Collection are made by hand in the traditional
way. Montblancs Manufacture in Villeret has accordingly
taken up the cause of preserving traditional Swiss watchmaking art while further enriching it with groundbreaking
innovations.

Meanwhile, at the Montblanc Manufacture in

Le Locle, this philosophy provides the drive to enhance
the tradition of Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship with
the most modern technologies. The result can be seen in
the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Collection, for which
Montblanc has transferred the concept of the first chronograph, patented by Nicolas Rieussec, to innovative Manufacture calibers, giving a distinctive new face to the chronograph. This is a perfect example of Montblancs approach
to watchmaking, which encompasses the entire process
of creating a timepiece, from conception and development
to manufacturing and absolute quality testing.

The Highest Level of Accuracy

Only a handful of Manufactures around the world possess
the capability and know-how to produce the balance-springs
of mechanical timepieces. The Montblanc Manufacture
in Villeret is among this select group. The master watchmakers themselves make the balance-springs in their
entirety, measuring their length, not by electronic means,
but by hand in accordance with tradition and with the
utmost accuracy.
This quest for perfection also fi nds expression in
the sophisticated fi nishing operations with which the
watchmakers of the Manufacture in Villeret enhance the
appearance of each individual component of the movement. Edges are chamfered by hand, plates are artistically
ornamented with Ctes de Genve stripes and wheels are
given a high polish. The watchmakers use traditional
materials such as Grand-Feu enamel for the dials, for
which they rely on techniques that impressively reveal
their expert craftsmanship.

In addition to their love of detail, the watchmakers at

both Manufactures are motivated by the challenge of
developing new and exceptional complications. The quest
for innovation leads to mechanical solutions unprecedented in the world of fine watchmaking, such as the
ExoTourbillon, for which Montblancs watchmakers
separated the tourbillon cage from the balance-wheel,
creating the first tourbillon with a cage smaller than
its balance-wheel.
A balance determines the accuracy of a watchs rate. Balances are

propelled by slender hairsprings, which are still traditionally handmade
at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret.

The Montblanc 500-Hours Test

As part of their craft, watchmakers assemble hundreds of individual
components, a task requiring a sharp eye, a steady hand and a saints
patience. The completed watches begin a life fraught with wear and
tear: they labor tirelessly, day and night, seven days a week, 52 weeks
a year. The movement of a 4-hertz watch completes 28,800 vibrations
per hour. Prior to its scheduled servicing in three to ve years time,
a watchs balance will perform approximately one billion vibrations
that need to be orchestrated by delicate parts such as hairsprings,
balance bearings and pallet forks.
Before a timepiece with a Manufacture caliber leaves the Manufacture in Le Locle, it is subjected to a comprehensive test program
developed by Montblanc. For 500 hours, the running of the watches
is examined in the utmost detail in a test laboratory. During this
three-week period, different series of tests subject the watches to
conditions that they will undergo over the course of a year. In this
way, Montblanc ensures and certifies that the finished timepieces
meet the companys stringent quality standards.
Only after the quality-assurance team at Montblanc Montre S.A. in

Le Locle is convinced that a watch upholds Montblancs strict quality
standards do they release it for subsequent delivery. Each watch that
passes the 500-hours test is individually issued a test certificate.

The Montblanc Meisterstck Heritage Collection embodies the codes
of Swiss fine watchmaking in every detail. The new collection is
inspired by the spirit of the Montblanc Meisterstck, emblematic of
masterly craftsmanship, timeless design, perfect functionality and
utmost sophistication.
This collection exemplifies the traditional characteristics of Swiss
fine watchmaking. The time is shown by faceted hands of classic
dauphine shape on silvery white bomb dials artistically finished with
a soleil decoration. The chapter ring comprises polished triple-facetted
applique indexes of three different lengths. The surface finishes, like
the horizontal satin-brushing of the case-middle, are differentiated, so
as to underline the classical shape of the elegant case, which is 39 mm
or 41 mm in diameter. The crown displays the Montblanc emblem as
a polished motif in relief against a matte, micro-blasted background.
The Meisterstck Heritage Collection incorporates these lavish
characteristics in all models, from the classic three-handed watch with
date or elegant moon-phase watch to the remarkable complications
of a perpetual calendar or monopusher chronograph.

Pulsograph Limited Edition
In 1923, the Minerva Manufacture, which preceded the Montblanc
Manufacture in Villeret, created one of the first chronograph calibers
for wristwatches, thus paving the way for the success of mechanical
wristwatch chronographs. These precision instruments for measuring
short times became important professionals tools for their time. The
most elaborated were equipped with a pulsometer scale, especially
favored by doctors and enabling them to precisely measure their
patients pulse.
The pulsometer scale of the Montblanc Heritage Pulsograph
is graduated up to 30 pulse beats and is shown on the outer edge of
the dial. The central chronograph seconds hand follows this scale
and like the arrow-shaped hand of the 30-minute counter is made
of blued steel. The hours and minutes hands, the hand on the smallseconds display and the applique hour markers are red gold-plated
and designed to harmonize with the elegant 18 K red gold case, which
is 41 mm in diameter.
The Montblanc Meisterstck Heritage Pulsograph, a limited
edition of 90 watches, is powered by the Montblanc Manufacture
Caliber
. This impressive, hand-finished movement, marked
with the traditional Minerva arrow, can be admired through the sapphire
crystal case back.
Though its diameter is merely 29.5 mm (13 lines), chronograph

Caliber
contains all the attributes of classic chronograph
mechanisms and traditional Manufacture craftsmanship, like

the column-wheel control and horizontal-wheel coupling.

Perpetual Calendar
The grande complication of the perpetual calendar represents an immense
mechanical challenge and an expression of the highest watchmaking
skill. The perpetual calendar always displays the correct date without
needing to be corrected by hand, including for months with less than
31 days and for leap years. This is achieved by a sophisticated mechanism involving a multitude of different levers and cams of complex
form that enable the lengths of months and leap years to be recognized
mechanically.
The elegant 39 mm red gold
The displays of the Heritage Perpetual Calendar are harmoniously

arranged on the dial: the date at 3 oclock, the day at 9 oclock and
the month at 12 oclock. On the inner scale of the month display, the
leap year cycle is indicated by a blue triangle, with the leap year shown
by a red 4. A window at 6 oclock shows the moon phase and the age
of the moon in days at the upper edge.
The slim blued hands of the calendar displays stand out elegantly
against the silvery white bomb dial with soleil finish. Gilded hours
and minutes hands harmonize with the 18 K red gold case and the pin
buckle of the black alligator-skin strap. A sapphire crystal case back

One Second in the Summer of 1821

Thanks to Nicolas Rieussec, the watch industry was able to overcome
a new mechanical challenge: creating a timepiece that would for the
first time precisely measure elapsed time intervals. Nicolas Rieussec
first applied his invention at a horse race in Paris in 1821. The functional
principle was the combination of a timepiece and a writing instrument.
Nicolas Rieussec affixed a pair of indexes, each culminating in an
ink-filled nib, above two rotating discs. When its designated button

the performance of each racehorse to the nearest quarter of a second.
The principle of time measurement was permanently transformed by
Nicolas Rieussecs invention, which he aptly named chronograph
from the Greek chronos (time) and graphein (to write).
The first patent for the manufacture of a chronograph was granted
to Nicolas Rieussec in 1822, yet this was only the beginning of a process
of experimentation and development that continues to this very day.
In 1825, the ingenious watchmaker unveiled an improved and more
readily portable chronograph that indicated the hours, minutes and
seconds and could even show a fifth of a second. By 1845, Nicolas
Rieussec had developed a chronograph in the now-familiar circular
form of a stopwatch.

Montblancs watchmakers have used a new combination of
materials on the dial: Super-LumiNova pigments invisible in the
daytime are inlaid all around the chapter ring, which is crafted
from hybrid ceramic. As darkness falls, these numerals become
visible, lending the watch the characteristic style of the Montblanc
Nicolas Rieussec Collection. Luminescent hands make the time
clearly legible. A version in 18 K red gold has been produced in a
limited edition of 193 watches, while a variation in stainless steel
is limited to 565 watches.

The revolutionary idea behind the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising
Hours is to stage the natural wonders of dawn and its evening counterpart, dusk. Depending on the time of day or night, the numerals on the
hours disc change color from black for daytime hours to blue for the
hours of the night, allowing the wearer to instantly assign each hour
to the correct half of the day.
The characteristic face of the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Collection
has undergone further evolution in the Rising Hours model to display
the hours on a rotating disc, to which an appealing complication has
been added: a day/night indication in the hours display. This elaborate
and patented mechanism consists of two rotating discs positioned one
on top of the other. While the upper, 12-hour disc turns continually,
the color change for the numerals is accomplished by the underlying
disc, which rotates at variable speeds. The result of this Rising Hours
mechanism is clearly seen twice a day: at six oclock each morning, the
pierced digit 6 appears light blue on the left and black on the right to
symbolize that night is ending and day is dawning; at six oclock each
evening, black daytime hours on the left yield to pastel blue nighttime
hours on the right. In addition to this double-disc mechanism, four other
disc displays rotate in the Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours.
The highlight: the hours, in combination with a day/night indication,

appear through the cut-out numerals of the hours disc.

The second special feature of the Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours is a
veritable horological revolution. It is located behind the pierced Arabic
numerals of the 12-hour disc, where a patented mechanism changes
the color of the hour numerals depending on the time of day or night.
While the 12-hour disc rotates continually, the underlying day/
night disc, which is half pastel blue and half black, is propelled during
certain intervals and with varying speeds to produce the desired color
change in the cut-out numerals. To achieve the complicated motion
that provides the color change from day to night, the day/night disc is
controlled by a Maltese-cross mechanism comprising two cam wheels.
In a motion defined by their profiles, these wheels either turn idly past
each other (the day/night disc thus remains motionless throughout
these intervals) or intermesh. This engagement causes the day/night
disc to turn at an increasingly faster pace at predetermined times until
two teeth on either side engage in such a way that the day/night disc
no longer accelerates but instead continues to turn synchronously with
the 12-hour disc. Afterwards, the day/night disc decelerates again until
the meshing is completely separated, at which point the day/night disc
returns to a standstill. This patented rising hours mechanism
emulates the changes from night to day and vice versa, respectively at
dawn and dusk.

Chronograph Open Home Time
Rather than two buttons flanking the crown, this watch is equipped
with a single push-piece at 8 oclock: as a monopusher chronograph,
it relies on a single button to sequentially trigger the start, stop and
zero-return functions. Furthermore, this chronograph has no large
elapsed-seconds hand at the center of its dial, but pays homage to the
first Rieussec chronographs from 1821 with a pair of rotating counter
discs, one of which counts the elapsed seconds in the lower part of
the dial at 8 oclock, while its counterpart tallies up to thirty elapsed
minutes at 4 oclock.
The anthracite-colored dial of the Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph
Open Home Time shows the ordinary time on its off-center subdial.
This subdial features circular apertures inside its hour-scale, behind
which a partly skeletonized 12-hour disc rotates to show the hour in a
second time zone. Here, too, the display relies on Rieussecs principle
of a rotating disc rather than a hand: a small red triangular index
labeled HOME TIME points to the hour in the wearers home time
zone, while the larger hours and minutes hands keep track of the time
in whichever zone the watchs owner is presently located. This complex
interplay of three rotating discs is a technical solution that gives the
watch an unmistakable aesthetic and uses the dial as an integral part
of the movement.

Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 100

In 1916, the Minerva Manufacture, later to become the Montblanc
Manufacture in Villeret, took professional circles by storm with its
first mechanical stopwatch accurate to a hundredth of a second. In
its later incarnations, the timepiece was even augmented to include a
central chronograph hand that could describe one complete 360-degree
rotation per second. This same principle is used in the Montblanc
TimeWalker Chronograph 100 with the newly developed Manufacture
Caliber
.
The TimeWalker Chronograph 100 incorporates the fusion of
the purest watchmaking tradition, cutting-edge innovation and high
performance. In a reference to the 1916 Minerva stopwatch, the
push-piece of this manually wound monopusher chronograph is
similarly positioned at 12 oclock on the Montblanc TimeWalker
Chronograph 100. The transparent dial in sapphire crystal reveals a
view of the hand-finished Manufacture Caliber
. The case
back, inset with a sapphire crystal glass, and the carbon-coated case
middle are both made of titanium. The stainless steel bezel has an
extremely resistant DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating.
The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 100 has been crafted
in a limited edition of 100 watches.
In order to measure hundredths of a second, a mechanical movement

needs a balance that completes 360,000 semi-oscillations per hour.
A 50-hertz balance of this kind is fabricated in the workshops at the
Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret.

The Montblanc Manufacture Caliber
is powered by
two balances with different frequencies: a small, flat high-speed
balance-wheel for the chronograph function with a frequency raised
to 360,000 vibrations per hour (50 Hz) and a large, high-mass screw
balance-wheel for the accurate operation of the going-train, oscillating
at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.50 Hz).
This movement has two spring-barrels with a winding mechanism
that allows both barrels to be wound by the same single crown.
A hundredth-of-a-second chronograph running at 360,000 vibrations per hour needs special controls. The sophisticated chronograph
function of the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 100 is made
possible by a patented mechanism with a new type of column-wheel
control and zero-reset mechanism for the central hundredths-of-asecond hand.
Using meticulous manual processes, plates, bridges and steel
components are made, finished and decorated with circular-graining
and Ctes de Genve stripes. The edges are chamfered by hand. The
chamfering is hand-polished and the sides drawn out. The balancesprings are individually numbered by eye according to traditional
practice and the spring-setting of the chronograph is painstakingly
performed by hand. For this purpose, all the rockers and levers must be
ground to match each other to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter.
The engineers at the Montblanc Manufacture devised a patented mechanism

with an innovative column-wheel control and a novel zero-return solution for
the central hundredths-of-a-second hand or trotteuse.

The TimeWalker Twinfly Chronograph is driven by Montblancs
state-of-the-art Manufacture Caliber
. This newly developed
automatic chronograph movement featuring innovative and contemporary new features has been taken one step further: it boasts a newly
developed central flyback function on the minutes and seconds hands
(TwinFly). As a special function, this automatic chronograph possesses
a fast hour change without stopping the movement. Apart from the
vertical disc clutch, the column-wheel control and the twin barrels
supplying a three-day power reserve, this movement is characterized
by a 24-hour second time zone indication with a day/night display at
12 oclock and a date display. A modern and an extremely low-wear
disc-coupling engages to transfer energy from the fourth-wheel to the
chronograph-wheel. The large screw balance vibrates at a frequency of
28,800 vibrations/hour (4 Hz) and a double-barrel ensures 72 hours of
running autonomy. Further proof of Montblancs expertise in chronograph movements is the newly calculated profile for the teeth of the
gear-wheels, which significantly improves the efficiency of the energy

The acronym UTC stands for Universal Time Coordinated, which is
synchronized with TAI (Temps Atomique International, i.e. International Atomic Time). In 1972, UTC replaced GMT, Greenwich Mean Time,
which had defined the limits of the 24 time zones into which the world
was divided at the Meridian Conference in Washington D.C. in 1884.
The 43 mm-diameter stainless steel case with a narrow stainless
steel or satin-fi nished titanium bezel leaves room for a simple and
tidy dial, the design of which is entirely subordinated to its function.
The broad flange around the dial bears the 24-hour scale for a freely
selectable second time zone; light and dark zones on the scale enable it
to serve as a day/night indicator as well. The red tip of an extra-long
skeletonized hours hand sweeps along this scale to show the time
in the currently selected second time zone. The smaller hours hand
indicates the local time. The minutes hand and seconds hand are valid
for both time zones. When the crown is withdrawn to its first extracted position, the hand for the second time zone can be reset in hourly
increments. This intelligent mechanism is part of Caliber
with automatic winding, a balance with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and a power reserve of approximately 46 hours.

The important things in life cannot always be kept in one time zone.
To help its wearer keep tabs on time in a globalized workday, the
TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres simultaneously shows the
different times in all 24 of the worlds time zones.
The local time is shown by the hands, while the flange around the
dial bears the names of 24 cities, each of which represents one of the
24 time zones into which our planet is divided. A 24-hour disc turns
at the center of the dial to indicate the hours in the localities specified
on the flange radially opposite the discs markings. While the time
zones progress with the sun from east to west across the meridians of
longitude, the Montblanc TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres also
brings the north-south axis into play, as it is available in Northern and
Southern versions. These different perspectives naturally affect the
time displays and require corresponding adaptations in the mechanical
movements. Both models have immobile rings around their dials
marked with 24 place names in the relevant hemispheres, but the
24-hour discs in the centers turn in opposite directions and are labeled
clockwise or counterclockwise respectively.
The Northern Hemisphere model shows a map of the Earth as

seen from the north with the North Pole at its center; the Southern
Hemisphere variant puts the South Pole at the midpoint.

Haute horlogerie has a long and illustrious history in the Montblanc
Manufacture in Villeret, for it was here in 1858 that the foundation
for 156 years of uninterrupted watchmaking tradition was laid in the
very building that still houses the Manufacture today. The handmade
masterpieces the Montblanc watchmakers create require a perfect
command of watchmaking technique, a trained eye and an intuitive
understanding of a watchs soul qualities that are instilled by a
lifetime dedicated to the craft. Every handcrafted detail of the decorated timepieces in the Montblanc Collection Villeret is an example
of the excellent craftsmanship distilled into each wristwatch that
leaves the ateliers, making each watch a mechanical work of art.
Over the years, the Montblanc Manufacture has continued to uphold its
values and preserve its working methods, and its watchmakers today belong

up to a week of painstaking work until every surface is flawless.

ExoTourbillon Rattrapante
Combining Montblancs patented ExoTourbillon and a split-seconds
chronograph, the ExoTourbillon Rattrapante constitutes a world
premiere in haute horlogerie. In the upper part of the silver-grained
dial in solid 18 K gold, the balance-wheel oscillates freely in full view,
separate from the tourbillon carriage. Below it, the displays are harmoniously arranged on the regulator dial with Grand-Feu enamel rings.
The off-center hours display also shows a second time zone with a day/
night indication.
The case of the Monopusher Chronograph a limited edition
of 18 watches is made from 18 K white gold. The sapphire crystal
case back permits a view of the sumptuously hand-finished Montblanc
Manufacture Caliber
with its two column-wheels, the
traditional Minerva arrow and the classic rattrapante clamps.
The three-dimensional regulator dial is made of gold, decorated

with Grand-Feu enamel elements crafted in accordance with the
tradition of ultra-fine watchmaking.

The Patented Montblanc ExoTourbillon

The striving for perfection at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret
resulted in the development of an innovative tourbillon construction
that brings significant advantages in terms of energy request and precision: the patented ExoTourbillon. It is the worlds first tourbillon with
a rotating cage that is smaller than its balance, which oscillates outside
the cage hence the Greek prefix exo (outside) in the timepieces name.
The balance of the Montblanc ExoTourbillon Rattrapante is isolated
from the tourbillons rotating cage so that the cages rotation does not
interfere with the balances oscillations. Thus the balance performs with
greater precision because it isnt disturbed by the inertia of the cage. The
smaller rotating cage has less mass and is freed from the weight of the
balance, so less energy is needed to power its rotary motion.
Thanks to the ExoTourbillons patented energy-saving construction,
a tourbillon can be wed to a cleverly designed split-seconds chronograph
function. Despite its mechanical complexity, this split-seconds function
can work with the same barrel and the same power reserve as those of
the basic chronograph movement and can do so with greater precision
than would be possible in a chronograph without the ExoTourbillons
construction.
Painstaking handcraftsmanship, invested in each ExoTourbillon
Rattrapante from the Montblanc Collection Villeret 1858 and performed
in accord with authentic Swiss watchmaking tradition, explains the
limited number of 18 watches in the series of these grande complication
timepieces.

is pressed, allowing the user to read the duration of an intervening

One Watch, Two Faces

A watchmaker is at home, looking on as his son plays. Once again,
the latter is absorbed in saving the world with his toy action robots,
which can be turned into human-like figures, cars, airplanes and other
objects at a whim. The father wonders why these versatile figures
exude such a great fascination which he, too, finds hard to escape.
Gradually, as his son takes part in a rocket propulsion at full volume,
the watchmakers thoughts begin to play their own game: constructing
a watch that could change not only its design but also like the robot
its function.
The idea for developing the Metamorphosis is born. In accordance
with Montblancs quest of always combining innovation with tradition, the Caliber
is selected as the basis for a revolutionary concept watch. The modern, entirely newly developed caliber is
completely produced at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret.
Montblanc Metamorphosis:
A watch with two faces and two functions. The first face of the
Metamorphosis is that of a classical watch; the second face is
that of a sporty monopusher chronograph.

Metamorphosis
The name of this watch expresses what makes Montblancs Metamorphosis
unique. Changing external appearances is as commonplace in the

watch industry as it is for a chameleon, but a genuine metamorphosis
also implies an inner transformation. Absolutely unprecedented in haute
horlogerie, Montblancs Metamorphosis is a wristwatch with two faces
and two different functions.
The first face of the Metamorphosis is the dial of a classic regulator
watch with an off-center hours hand, a retrograde 270 minutes hand,
a large seconds hand, and a date display at 6 oclock. The second face
is the dial of a sporty monopusher chronograph with a central elapsedseconds hand and a novel counter for 30 elapsed minutes at 6 oclock.
Between these two faces are 15 transitional seconds during which a
patented mechanism creates a metamorphosis that uniquely unites
the two faces. The dial opens entirely by mechanical means and the
chronographs elapsed-minutes counter rises upwards. This spectacular
movement is built with 728 individual components. All these 728 parts
satisfy the exacting demands for quality, aesthetics and predominantly
manual construction that distinguish the centuries-old Swiss horological
tradition. Montblancs Metamorphosis has been crafted in a strictly
limited series of 28 wristwatches at the Montblanc Manufacture in
Villeret.

Timewriter II Chronograph Bi-Frquence 1000

This chronograph seems to defy the laws of physics. A frequency of
500 hertz was thought to be indispensable for a mechanical watch
that can subdivide precious time into a thousandth of a second, but
the master watchmakers at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret
devised a chronograph that achieves this feat with a balance oscillating
at only 50 hertz.
The master watchmakers inspiration for this mechanism was
triggered by their childhood memory of playing with big wooden
hoops, which they rolled along the street either by repeatedly pushing
them with their hand or by striking them with a small stick. They soon
realized that they could keep the hoop rolling in a uniform rotary
motion if they continually gave it equally strong impulses at equally
timed intervals. Decades later, this phenomenon would point them on
the path toward an ingenious method for measuring a thousandth of a
second. Instead of just one impulse propelling the seconds hand with
the frequency needed to measure a hundredth of a second (50 hertz),
an additional impulse is sent to an innovative wheel in the gear-train:
the thousandths-wheel. Powered in this manner, it spins around its axis
at an unchanging speed to measure a thousandth of a second. The
chronograph function is controlled by a two-level column-wheel: one
level guides the start, stop and zero-return functions; the other level
controls the thousandths-wheel.
Whereas a frequency of 500 Hz is generally considered physically

necessary to capture the thousandth of a second in a mechanical
watch, this genuine chronograph accurately measures down to
the 1/1,000th of a second with a frequency of only 50 Hz.

Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique
An horological innovation that enriches haute horlogerie with numerous unprecedented features, the Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique is the first
wristwatch with both a tourbillon escapement and a double cylindrical hairspring. As a renowned Manufacture specializing in chronographs and particularly in the production of hairsprings and balancewheels, the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret has always combined
traditional Swiss craftsmanship and the quest for innovation. The
watchmakers in Villeret miniaturized and transplanted the precisely
beating escapement with a cylindrical hairspring originally developed for marine chronometers in the 18th century into a tourbillon.
Unlike the vast majority of contemporary balance-springs, a cylindrically

shaped balance-spring doesnt swing to and from in a single plane,
Unlike conventional hairsprings that coil and uncoil in a single

plane, a cylindrical hairspring expands and contracts along a perpendicular axis. Instead of being wound as a spiral in a plane, with successive coils disposed at increasing distances from a common central point,
it is wound along a common central axis, each individual coil the same
size as and disposed on top of the preceding one. This construction eliminates the slight eccentricity of the center of gravity and allows
the cylindrical spring to breathe with absolute concentricity and
symmetry. The Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique contains not just one but two
cylindrical balance-springs, which act in opposition to each other with
a torque that remains constant, thus further optimizing the isochronism
that ensures the precision of the watchs movement. Embodying a
technique never before attempted in a wristwatch, these innovative
balance-springs are produced exclusively in-house at the Montblanc
Manufacture in Villeret.

A Superlative Vintage
Drawing its inspiration from numerous historical developments, the
Collection Villeret 1858 celebrates a wealth of ideas from days gone
by in combination with the development of contemporary chronographs that can measure more than mere time.
The Vintage Tachydate features a gold dial with classical grain
decoration, which is produced in the style of the historic Minerva
chronographs of the 20th century. On its tachymeter scale, speeds of
between 30 and 1,000 km/h can be measured and distances can be
determined by means of a telemeter scale. It is thus reminiscent of an
era when speed acquired an entirely new dimension with the advent of
the automobile and advances in aircraft design. The Vintage Tachydate
with date display is limited to 58 watches and is available in white
gold and red gold versions.
