3.4 Theory:
When an IC engine is designed and manufactured it is tested in a laboratory. The purpose of
testing is to
1. Determine the information which cannot be obtained by the calculation
2. To confirm the data used in the design.
3. To satisfy the customer regarding the performance of the engine.
Performance means operation of all variables relating to the working of the engine. These
variables are power, fuel consumption, load etc.
3.5 DESCRIPTION:
Petrol engine is an air cooled, single cylinder, Vertical, 4-stroke engine developing about 2.2
KW (3HP) at 3000RPM. The engine is rope started. The petrol engine is coupled to an
alternator, which serves as a loading device. Suitable control panel with voltmeter and

ammeter is provided to measure the power generated. Fuel consumption is measured with a
burette and a three-way cock, which regulates the flow of petrol from the tank to the engine.
