Reading:
I am happy to report that the class is
showing amazing growth in their
reading stamina and confidence. We
are now tackling bigger books and
showing off bigger reading muscles. In
this new unit we will be:
*using patterns in text to predict what may
happen next
*notice when the pattern breaks
*zooming in on letter-sound relationships to
help with unknown words (beginning &
ending of words) We say, Get your mouth
ready for the first sound and try something
that makes sense
*reread when something tricks you
*reread books to bring them to life, get into
character
*readers ask questions before, during and
after reading their books

Writing:
In writing, we have finished our unit on
personal narratives. Now we are
exploring and writing informational
books. These books teach people how
to do something. The class has spent a
lot of time thinking about all the things
they know how to do and that they
could teach others about such as riding
a bike, planting a garden or baking
cookies. They are able to verbalize their
idea, plan the pages out in steps,
illustrate and write words to match the
picture. Your child will continue to find
opportunities to teach readers
throughout this unit. You can encourage
this at home by talking about the steps
in cooking a favorite recipe or even the
steps it takes to get ready for bed. The
possibilities are endless! The students are
so excited to take on this new role. The
students get to be the experts and they
are enjoying this new type of writing. We
are writers!

Phonics:
This month we will be working on blending
syllables, hearing first and last sounds as we
are writing words, and using appropriate
lowercase letter formation in our daily
writing. We will be using these skills to make
new words within word families and build
upon our high frequency list. Letters are so
much fun!

nose
You stand so tall when the cold
wind blows.

Snowflakes:
(To the tune of "twinkle, twinkle little star")

Snowflakes, snowflakes falling

down,
On the trees and on the ground.
I will build a man of snow,
Tall black hat and eyes of coal,
If the sun comes out today,
I will watch him melt away!

Math: We are having so much fun diving into Unit 8. Students

will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction.
They will learn to compose (add together) and decompose
(break apart) numbers within 10. We are encouraging
students to practice writing addition and subtraction
equations while also showing their thinking with a picture. I am
so excited to watch their reasoning and mathematical skills
grow. We are mathematicians!
