QUESTION 1 [4 MARKS]
The Tenaga National Berhad branch in Kuantan is conducting a survey to find out the average
monthly consumption of electricity in a selected housing area. The area consists of twenty blocks
of double-storey houses. Each block consists of twelve houses. A random sample of five blocks
is selected. All the houses in each block are included as units in the sample.

An article titled, Sex Differences in Static Strength and Fatigability in Three Different Muscle
Groups, by J. Misner et al. published results of a study on grip and leg strength of males and
females. The following data, in kilo-Newton (kN), is based on their measurements of right-leg
strength only for males and females.
Table 1
Male Female

Preliminary data analyses indicate that you can reasonably presume leg strength is normally
distributed for both males and females and that the standard deviations of leg strength are
approximately unequal.
a) Construct a 90% confidence interval for the difference between mean right leg strength of
males and females. Interpret your result.
(9 Marks, CO2/PO3)
b) Find an upper bound of 97% confidence interval for population means right-leg strength of
males.
4
(3 Marks, CO2/PO3)
a) Find sampling distribution on the percentage of patients who died because of the virus from
state M.
(3 Marks, CO2/PO3)
b) How many patients from State N need to be sampled for 98% confidence interval so that the
estimation error lies within 10%?
(3 Marks, CO2/PO3)
c) Construct the 95% confidence interval for the difference of population proportion of survival
from the virus for both states.

QUESTION 5 [8 MARKS]
A computer system administrator notices that computers running a particular operating system
seem to freeze-up more often as the installation of the operating system ages. She measures the
time (in minutes) before freeze-up one month and seven months after the system installed,
respectively. The results are given as follows.
Table 2
One month after
207.4 233.1 215.9 235.1 225.6 244.4 245.3
installation
Seven months after
158.4 170.8 190.2 201.7 149.4 203.7 196.8 168.9 189.2
installation
Compute a 96% confidence interval on the ratio of population variances before freeze-up for the
seventh and first month after installation. Hence, interpret your answer.
