MUSE 376 / Choral Methods II

Ch. 3 Directing the Choral Music Program

Kenneth H. Phillips

2016

This chapter talks about how to promote and recruit a successful choral department. I

must keep in mind that this does not mean only reaching out to students in the hallway. As a

music educator, I should be creating a bond with parents and the surrounding community. The

students are the face of each program but there needs to be outside support to keep it alive. In

addition, I will be adamant in getting my administration and other teachers involved with the

music program at my school. The book offers ways to promote performances to those outside of

the program. A choral newsletter is an option to keep the community involved in what the

department is doing each month. This can

I believe that an outstanding program can sell itself to students. This may take some time

to achieve but with hard work, an exuberant personality, and willing students, a program will

flourish. This chapter explains that a director should make use of posters, the schools newspaper

and a public address system when advertising for recruitment. In addition, the message should be

short and catchy to grab the readers attention. I find it very important to interact with students

outside of your program during a lunch hour and passing periods. This will get a different variety

of people thinking about the music program. I plan to reach out to all students and explain why

music is vital for a well-rounded education.
