A description of character is sometimes hard to relate to someone,
especially if that someone is genuine, of true individuality and unequalled
or incomparable to anyone else.
In a wild comparison to a fine German beer, unparalleled in quality that

Bill Cody is that fine German beer.
With a lifetime of skill and knowledge about the automobile craft, he
is truly one of a kind.
Being in the business of cars for nearly 50 plus years, "Bo" (as his
friends call him), is single handedly responsible for many restorations and
beauties that we see at shows all over and still today works just as hard at
restoring and customizing Americas most loved object: the automobile.
In fact, Bo at a very young age learned that there was something about
cars that could turn a profit.
I bought my first car for 15 bucks and sold it for 25, and at age 13 I
was hooked.
Bo recalls seeing an old late 50s, early 60s Ford Ranchero down the
street from where he lived selling for 600 bucks. He told his dad but his dad
didnt like them. So whats the problem? his dad replied. Well, I dont
have 600 dollars Bo said. His dad told him if you want it go get it, but you
have to work for it- so he did. He didnt discourage him in any way, but like
anything in life, it doesnt come free.

Rainy day blues
Went out to the shop the other day in a light drizzly
rain to see what could be done. My dear wife has been nag-
ging OOPs, not to use that word, ok, advising me to make
the shop look better, just in case someone might come over.
That does happen once in a while. She started with the snap-
shots of some of the over 300 customer cars restored in the
shop just stapled to the wall. Not too tidy to be sure but then
I never strived to have a show shop. I told her I have restored
many cars but never a shop. She was not amused. The pho-
tos are now all matted and in nice frames. Next came the
table tops then the floor. Sweep the floor?? What for? Just
take the yard blower and whoosh, it is all done. At this she

Now the shop is all, well kinda tidy, it is time to mess it
up with a project or two. I brought the 1914 Ford roadster
in and changed the worn out tires and in the process chipped
the paint on the rims making myself another job and ex-
pense. I then fixed the non working lights but had to rewire
some of it and used up all the connectors so will have to buy
more. Went to fix the valve cover oil leak and low and be-

like going out so went to check up on the 1914 Ford pickup

engines have an easier time filling the cylinder, but propor-
tionally have more exhaust to handle on the exit side. It is
nice to see a five to ten percent increase in the intake to ex-
haust ratio for every 15 psi of boost the engine uses. For
instance, it is typical to see the exhaust flow around seventy-
five percent as much as the intake for best performance on
a normally asperated engine. If the engine is to have 15 psi
of boost this figure needs to go up to eighty or eighty-five
percent. If the exhaust valve size is the limitation, it may be
necessary to achieve additional exhaust flow at the expense of

some intake flow.
It is easy to think this additional exhaust flow can
be achieved by opening the exhaust valve earlier. A super-
charged engine holds higher cylinder pressures until later in

the power stroke, compared with a normally aspirated en-
gine. Opening the exhaust valve early throws away a lot more
power than it does with a normally aspirated engine.
Another aspect to consider with a blown engine is the
compression ratio. With chamber volume not being as criti-

valve up to the head gasket or cylinder wall is now possible.
The ability to deshroud the valves to the maximum often

Raceway announces 2017 racing schedule

Tulare, CA December 27, 2017The Merle Stone Chev-
rolet Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare has released its 2017
schedule of events, as always putting a focus on special
shows throughout the campaign.
Fifteen nights of action will be featured at the Tulare
County Fairgrounds based one-third mile clay oval this com-
ing season. Highlights include the traditional double header
weekend on Friday & Saturday March 17 & 18 showcasing the
national traveling World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car
Series. The USAC West Coast 360 Sprint Car Series will be
on hand both nights in March, while the Sport Mods will also
compete during the Saturday finale.
Other notable Sprint Car events on the schedule include
a return of the USAC/CRA Wingless 410s on April 8, the
fourth annual Peter Murphy Classic on April 21 & 22, the an-
nual Chris & Brian Faria Memorial on Saturday May 20, a visit
by the Civil War 360 Sprint Car Series presented by Flow-
master on Saturday July 22 and the season ending 24th an-
nual Southwest Contractors Trophy Cup on Thursday, Friday
& Saturday October 19, 20 & 21.
The Peter Murphy Classic has also grown to be a big part
of the Thunderbowl Raceway season and moves to an earli-
er date this season, rather than the traditional July one. This
years format for the first time will showcase Winged 360
Sprint Cars as the top billing on Friday night, while the King
of the West 410 Sprint Car Series & the USAC West Coast
360s highlight the card during the finale.
In addition to the Peter Murphy Classic the traveling King
of the West 410 Sprints will also be on hand for the Chris &
Brian Faria Memorial, as well as an event on Saturday June
10. Gaining in popularity each year the Western RaceSaver
Sprint Cars will compete in a total of five shows this season
at the track, with those dates April 8, April 21, May 20, June
10 & July 22.
The season will get underway with the two-night Spring
Nationals on Friday & Saturday February 24 & 25 featuring
the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods, Hobby
Stocks & Mini Stocks. It will be a nice prelude to the late-sea-
son Dirt Nationals, which will be contested for the second
straight year at the Thunderbowl. All the same divisions will
return for the prestigious showcase on Friday & Saturday
October 6 & 7.

You know when we were kids, we had no money, but we
could do things back then to earn a buck or two. Sweep, rake
leaves- whatever it took you know-it was all about survival.
I asked Bo, "Do you know or can you estimate how many cars
you have worked on or restored since the beginning?", he chuckled
and said "Well, if I had a picture of each one, there are not enough
walls in this entire shop to display them. I could easily wallpaper
the largest wall right there and then some."
Bo himself has owned three shops and has literally worked on
a thousand or more cars & motorcycles since his childhood...And
he is not done by far.
"Back in the day, it was normal to have a car for an hour
and then hustle to move on the next project, that was my survival.
Thats just what you had to do," Bo said. He did an immeasurable
amount of flipping, fixing, polishing and painting cars, trucks and
motorcycles. He was always used to consistently moving and find-
ing new projects and ways to make money by buying, restoring
then selling it.
"I could grab a Rambler or Valiant, do a bit of work on it, sell
it for 400.00 and Id make a hundred on just that. You figure, for a
week of work at a company, I would make 67 dollars, so if I could
flip a car in a day and pocket a hundred, for one day that was really
good."
At age 13 and 15, Bo and his brother both owned cars and
when his folks would leave or go out to dinner for the evening,
they would take them out and race to the end of the street as if
they were old enough to even drive them. My brother had a 40
Ford two door sedan and I had a 40 Chevy two door sedan and we
would race to see who got to the corner first, said Bo reminiscing.
Then we would put everything back in place so our dad didnt
know before they got home.
Bo said his mother didnt know he even owned a car until she
wanted a sewing machine and told him if he knew of someone who
had an old car to trade, she could get this machine she wanted.
Ive got a 40 Chevy back in the alley, Bo said. What? What are could store and keep motorcycles easier and work on them better.
you doing with a car? said Bos Mother. So from that time on, the
secret was out and his folks learned of his hobby. The trade never
worked out but Bos father being upset at first, quickly realized his
son had the automobile bug.
His father being in the plumbing trade, had access to gas fit-
tings, torches and solder. He asked Bo, So what are you going
to do with this car? He explained that he wanted to fix up areas,
mold this stuff off here and round this thereOk, his Dad said,
get that tin food can from the kitchen, cut off the lid and lets prac-
tice. So from then on, Bo learned how to take off trim and mold-
ing, repairing and filling holes using his fathers plumbing tools.
Bo Cody and his older brother did everything together grow-
ing up and worked on many cars and bikes. "Cars were cheap back
then. If you spent say, two thousand dollars fixing up a car that was
the max. Today you cant even paint a car under two. Back then, a
'57 Chevy was around two thousand dollars new, so I could grab
one around 3-400.00 off the streets to fix up," Bo explains.
He spent time in Southern California customizing, painting
& building motorcycles in the height of the Easy Rider days and
actually a bit before then. Being that there is not a lot of parking
and space in a large city and space was expensive then too, you
ways been the one waving goodbye, because then I can go out and
I was about 19, my brother was a couple years older, but I
was living in Redondo Beach at the time and as you know that was
a hot time for choppers and motorcycles and we were doing all that

stuff even before that movie came out, Bo explains. Being right in
the middle of the action of movies and things going on, they had
a prime location and worked on Wilshire and La Brea. We did
shows and had my custom bikes there the same time the bikes from
the movie were being shown. We had a lot of fun doing custom
work like the one from the cover of Choppers magazine, a decade
before these magazines were even out and popular, Bo states.
After all the countless cars he has owned and worked on, he
is particular to a 1949 Fastback Cadillac it seemed. Well, I could
have sold this a dozen times or so along the way, it is not my fa-
vorite but its my style, this is what I like, Bo explains. He is a
simple man, telling me of growing up on beans and hamburgers
to make ends meet. It isnt a money thing to me, I dont have
jewelry or fancy things, I was never into that. But I have cars, I have
motorcycles.
Bo, as he escorts me through a tour of many rooms in his
shop, telling me about his passion he has about motorcycles and
cars he owns. Look here, thats a fine piece of iron right there,
showing me a pristine 1951 Panhead. Bo seems to be a simple man
indeed with a steadfast and loyal passion for the craft.
Raised in Fresno, California his drive and entrepreneurial
mindset came second nature and was instilled in him at a very early
age. His business sense mainly came from his Grandfather who
owned a furniture store on 3rd and Belmont with rental properties
on both sides of the street to add. "He was quite the guy," said Bo.
"An Entrepreneur."
It is true after all, that we learn by our elders and that the 'ol
apple doesnt fall far from the tree.
If you ever get a chance to meet or get to know Bo Cody, you
will find that there is plenty of history and a lifetime of distinct and
instilled craft to be found.
One might say in mentioning Bo Codys life, that apple that
fell from his Grandfathers tree way back when, certainly sure is
sweet and uniquely organic.
Out of all the cars he has seen, touched and/or worked on, I
asked what his favorite one was overall that he could remember:
"You wanna know what my favorite car is.... Its simple. It has al-

And as of 2016, after over 50 years of doing just that, he is still
at it with a stronger drive than ever before.

Central Valley Fallen Heroes Car Show

Sierra Vista Mall, Clovis CA
As dawn broke on Saturday morning, October 1st, ac-
tivity was high at the south parking lot of the Sierra Vista
Mall in Clovis, CA as the Central Valley Mustang Club pre-
pared for the Inaugural Central Valley Fallen Heroes Car
Show. By 7:00am a line of show cars was starting to form
on Santa Ana in anticipation of the show. By 10:00am, 243
cars, trucks and motorcycles would pass through the gates.
In addition, Clovis and Fresno police and firefighters as well
as the County Sheriffs Department and the California High-
way Patrol had assembled displays while military, sponsors
and vendors set up their EZ-Ups around the show site.
Spectators, eventually numbering more than 300, and
show participants were gathering and at 9:45am the opening
ceremony commenced with an invocation by the American
Legion Chaplain followed by the Presentation of Colors, the
National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and Taps.
After that it was cars, cars, more cars. Vendors included
Dutch Brothers Coffee, Kona Ice, Hawaiian Ice and tri-tip
meals prepared by the Guardians Motorcycle Club. AT
10:00am KJFX The Fox was broadcasting live from the
show site and at noon turned the microphone over to KYNO
until 2:00pm. There was a silent auction, raffle and 50/50
drawing. The show included a visit from the 501st Legion
Star Wars Enactors for the entertainment of the crowds.
Music and announcements were provided by Sean Ford who
covered the early hours and commencement activities.
At 2:30pm some 65 trophies and plaques sponsored by

At the close of show four mock checks of $3,000 were
presented to the four beneficiary charities followed by a stir-
ring rendition of Amazing Grace which was played by a
young bagpiper from the Fresno Police unit.
When all receipts were counted and all the bills paid
the actual proceeds from the show totaled $14,642.00 which
made the formal distribution to the four charities on Octo-
ber 28th to be $3,660.50. This presentation took place at
the Sierra Vista Mall with the captains of the Police Chap-

Student Internship /
Work Experience
Internships are increasingly important
for Reedley College students, because stu-
dents receive on-the-job experience that of-
ten leads to employment in the Automotive
Industry. Internships provide opportunities
for students to learn entry-level job respon-
sibilities from employers who are helping to
develop the next generation of employees and
future industry leaders. Originally the
Reedley College internship
class took place during the
summer after students had
completed all of the auto-
motive classes, but recently
it was decided to move the
class to the spring semester.
Starting the work-experi-
ence partnership prior to
the end of the technician
training program is proving
to be beneficial for everyone
involved. Last year many stu-
dents were hired after completing
their internship,
including four stu-
dents hired by the
dealerships where
they completed in-
ternships.

lapping the internship class with the end of
the automotive training program allows our
faculty to have daily contact with students as
they enter the workforce. This supervised dip
into the shallow end of the workforce pool
eases some of the anxiety for both the prospec-
tive employee and employer.
The small amount of money
spent by an employer on
wages and benefits for an
intern is a good investment,
because it often produces
quality, long-term employ-
ees. An employer might view
the internship as a trial run
for a potential new hire,
and if it doesnt work out,
theres no need to terminate
anyone. When the internship
goes well, it helps employers
to develop their staff with train-
able, entry-level employees, while
reducing the cost as-
sociated with hiring
and retention. Addi-
tionally, State Center
Community College
District, of which
Reedley College is a part, provides work-
ers compensation coverage to unpaid stu-
dent interns. Paid student interns receive
workers compensation benefits through
their employers insurance. Automotive

Vintage Blue & Gold License

Plates of 1970s Legal Again
Car enthusiasts of the 1970s have one additional reason to cheer for the New Year. Ef-
fective January 1, owners of cars from the 1970s will be able to use their California blue and
gold vintage license plates on era-appropriate vehicles.
We Americans take great pride in our cars, said Senator Jim Nielsen, who pushed for
the passage of the law. We associate fond memories of our families and our younger years
with our cars. This law will hopefully add a bit of happiness to those who own and treasure
cars from the 70s.
Specifically, this bill allows vehicle owners to dust off existing vintage plates in their ga-
rages (or be gifted plates from family or friends, or buy one from an estate sale), and register
it with the Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV will not be required to produce blue and
gold license plates.
The license plate must be legible and serviceable as determined by DMV. It
also must be on a vehicle of the coinciding era. The bill was supported by the Association of
California Car Clubs, Capital City Cruisers Car Club, El Dorado Early Ford V8 Car Club,
and Specialty Equipment Market Association, voluntary participation in this program
requires a $45 application fee and an additional $10 fee for annual renewals.

"Remember When"
Classic Car Show

November 5th, 2016 was the first annual "Remember
When" Classic Car Show and Antique
Airplane Fly-in at Chandler airport in Fresno, sponsored by
the Central Valley Aviation Association (CVAA). There were
many cars from the '20's, '30's, '40's, '50's and '60's along
with 6 retired race cars that raced at the old Kearney Bowl
race track just across the street, back in the day. No awards
were given, so there was no stress, everybody just enjoyed be-
ing there.
If there was a "star" of the show award, it would have to
go to a 1928 Ford Tri-Motor Airliner, which was winding up
it's West Coast Tour. Named the "City of Port Clinton", it
was flying continuously all day as people just kept pouring
in to buy a ride. At last count there were over 400 rides sold
on Saturday and Sunday. With a capacity of 11 passengers
per flight you can see how busy it was. Also 3 training air-
planes from the World War II years were there along with 6
Beechraft Model 17 "Staggerwings" from the '30's and '40's.
Plans for next year include a return of the Ford Tri-Mo-
tor, more antique and classic airplanes and more classic cars.
No date for next year has been confirmed as of this writing
as the CVAA is waiting for a time slot when the "Big Ford"
is available, but organizers are "hoping for late September
2017" said event chairman Morris Garcia.

On May 6, 2017, the best of General
Motors other divisions will gather once
again at beautiful Bicentennial Park in Clo-
vis for a unique car show that should be of
interest to anyone owning a Pontiac, Olds-
mobile, Buick, Cadillac or GMC. This will
be the 19th annual show so the members of
the Pontiacs of Central California (POCC)
should have everything ready to go. For
everyone who doesnt own one of these great
cars, this is a great show to visit and enjoy the
enthusiasm these committed owners demon-
strate through their love of the best cars from
1910 to 2010.
The weekend will begin with a Fri-
day Night BBQ at the Homewood Suites/
Hampton Inn at Clovis and Gettysburg.
The BBQ is open only to those who have
entered the show, show sponsors and mem-
bers of POCC. On Saturday, cars should be
parked by 9:00 AM and judging in 23 classes
begins at 10:00. The show field will also fea-
ture great vendor booths, display only cars, a
special show of vintage camping trailers, mil-

We are so pleased that Jim Wangers, God-
father of the GTO, is scheduled to appear
at our show. He makes limited appearances
at events like ours however he has said this

Big Changes Coming for 2018 Ford Mustang

Ford is giving the Mustang a midcycle refresh for the 2018
model, including engine upgrades and performance improve-
ments. Less than three years after the all-new, 50thanniversary
Ford Mustang rolled into showrooms, the pony car is set to get
some major updates.
That includes new front and rear-end design changes
meant to improve aerodynamics and give the Mustang a more
athletic look, Ford says. There will be engine upgrades deliver-
ing more power, with a 10-speed gearbox also boosting mile-
age, a new MagneRide suspension, and a number of new safety
and infotainment technologies.
The 2018 Ford Mustang refresh is more extensive than
the typical midcycle makeover, reflecting both increased com-
petition and the growing market shift from passenger cars to
SUVs. The goal is to keep Mustang the worlds best-selling
sports coupe, Ford officials said.
The new Mustang is our best ever, based on more than
50 years as one of the iconic sports car in America and now, the
world, said Joe Hinrichs, president of The Americas. Tap-
ping Mustangs enormous fan base, were bringing the new
Mustang straight to the people and introducing the new car
across multiple social media channels, reaching millions.
The new Mustang, which execs call "our best ever," is ex-
pected to hit showrooms late this year.
That includes multiple press previews, such as one at the North

stream version of the pony car to get an independent rear
suspension. Ford is taking a big step forward with the 2018
update, offering for the first time an optional MagneRide sus-
pension. The technology uses magnetically sensitive fluids that
can alter the stiffness of the Mustangs shocks in about the time
it takes to travel two inches at 60 mph.

SEMA President & CEO Chris Kersting today praised U.S. Representative Patrick McHen-
ry (R-NC) and his colleagues for reintroducing H.R. 350, the Recognizing the Protection of Mo-
torsports Act of 2017 (RPM Act). The bipartisan bill, which was submitted for reintroduction on
the first day of the new Congress, protects Americans right to modify street cars and motorcycles
into dedicated race vehicles and industrys right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete.
The RPM Act is cosponsored by 44 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill
ensures that transforming motor vehicles into racecars used exclusively in competition does not
violate the Clean Air Act. For nearly 50 years, the practice was unquestioned until the EPA pub-
lished proposed regulations in 2015 that deemed such conversions illegal and subject to severe

penalties. While the EPA withdrew the problematic language from the final rule making last year,
the agency still maintains the practice is unlawful.

result. However, the shortened election year schedule did not permit sufficient time for passage
of the bill by the previous Congress.
