OBJECTIVES OF THE LAB

The lab is the practice course of Concept of Engineering Design (DES101T) and thus the
concepts which are dealt in the theory will be realized through simple designs and
models.
The lab course will be help the students to realize that Design and Conceptualization as a
mathematical, scientific and a systematic problem-solving methodology.

Important: In some of the exercises, the product that is to be designed / modified/ analyzed/
realized etc will be informed only during the lab session

LIST OF EXERCISES

1. Need Analysis and realization Semantic Enquiry Method - Customer Interview and
House of Quality

of Quality

3. Concept selection and model making of simple objects Pugh Chart and Plastic work

4. Concept selection and model making of simple objects Pugh Chart and Sheet-metal

2 Design realization laboratory Dr.B.Raja, IIITD&M Kancheepuram

Exercise 1 : Need Analysis and realization
Semantic Enquiry Method - Customer Interview and
House of Quality
Aim: The aim of the experiment to analyze the need of customer for a known simple product (It
will be revealed during lab session). Based on the highest importance customer needs
re-conceptualize the design. For the product that is displayed on the table and perform use
Semantic Enquiry and House of quality to analyze the customer need.

Note: Do not realize the product Only identify the major customer need.

Procedure

Assume that the TAs are your customers. Use the template to collect the customer views
and interpret the needs.
Use Semantic Enquiry to collect the customer views and their importance with respect to
design modification
Construct the Pareto chart to find the need of highest importance

Design of Questions: Points to be remembered
a. For the Semantic Enquiry let the TAs to talk freely and fill in the template.

Do not use jargon or sophisticated vocabulary.

Focus very precisely. Every question should focus directly on one specific topic /
part.
Use simple sentences. Two or more simple sentences are preferable to one
compound sentence.
Do not lead the customer toward the answer you want
Avoid questions with double negatives because they may create
misunderstanding.
In any list of options given to the respondents, include the choice of Other with a
space for a write-in answer.
Always include one open-ended question. Open-ended questions can reveal
insights and nuances and tell you things you would never think to ask.
The number of questions should be such that they can be answered in about 5
minutes.
Design the survey form so that tabulating and analyzing data will be easy.
Be sure to include instructions for completing and returning it.

Outcome

To find the needs with highest importance and construct the house of quality.

Exercise 3 : Concept selection using Pugh Chart
and model making of simple objects using Plastic
work
Aim: The aim of the experiment is to use a Pugh chart in order chooses the best book shelves and
a LCD TV stand shown in the figure. Realize one best design using a plastic model. Use
parameters such as commercial importance, aesthetics, easy to manufacture, cost etc to prepare
your Pugh Chart. Perform the Pugh chart for both the book shelves and LCD TV stand. Prepare
plastic model for the best chosen concept of either book shelf or TV stand.

Tools
1. Pugh Chart
2. Simple cutting tools to working with plastic.
3. Assume the relative dimension of the model logically and the model should not exceed
200 mm3

7 Design realization laboratory Dr.B.Raja, IIITD&M Kancheepuram

Pugh Chart

1. Take the parameter weightage out of 10 or 100. The sum of that column should be 10 or
100.
a. Determine features, functions, and any other factors that are the most important
to end user satisfaction.
b. Determine features and functions that are important to the technical success of
the product.
c. Determine the functions that markedly increase the costs of the product.
d. Determine the features and functions that differentiate the product from its
competitors.
e. Determine which functions have the greatest potential for improvement.
2. Take product rating to be between ++,+,0,-,--
3. Choose the parameter sensibly by yourself. Some important parameters are commercial
importance, recyclable, eco-friendliness aspects, aesthetics, easy to manufacture, cost,
purpose served etc.
4. Find the best concept based on the overall highest rating

Exercise 4 : Concept selection using Pugh Chart
and model making of simple objects using Sheet
metal work
Aim: The aim of the experiment is to use a Pugh chart in order chooses the best table and a table
lamp shown in the figure. Realize one best design using a sheet metal model. Use parameters
such as commercial importance, aesthetics, easy to manufacture, cost etc to prepare your Pugh
Chart. Perform the Pugh chart for both the table and table lamp. Prepare sheet metal model for
the best chosen concept of either table or table lamp.
