About Jammu
Set against the snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountains, Jammu lies between the Himalayan range in the north and the

plains of Punjab" target="_blank">Punjab in the south. Lakes, valleys and a diverse terrain make the entire region
quite varied. Forests of oak and chestnut cover the lower areas while deodar and pine add to the beautiful landscape at
higher altitudes. Jammu, the second largest city of Jammu and Kashmir" target="_blank">Jammu and Kashmir
becomes the administrative capital in winters due to excessive snowfall in Srinagar" target="_blank">Srinagar.
Named after King Jambu Lochan, who is said to have established it in 9th century BC, Jammu is typically a traditional
city made up of several ethnic communities engaged in agriculture or small scale industries. Temples dot the entire
region, while there are a few mosques in the region as well.

Sightseeing:

Temples dominate the sight-seeing highlights here. Raghunath Mandir in the heart of the city is the largest temple
complex in northern India and is devoted to Lord Ram. The shrine of Vaishno Deviji is yet another popular pilgrimage
destination situated close by. Visit the Bahu Fort which is home to Bawey Wali Mata Temple. Other temples in the
vicinity include Ranbireshwar Temple and Panchbakhtar Temple near River Tawi.

Featured review about Jammu

Ancient city-Best of travellers
"It's popular because of Vaishno Devi and Amarnath pilgrimage and is otherwise a growing town and expanding. An
ancient city with a lot of heritage to offer, this is a must visit for the ones exploring a lesser substitute to Srinagar in
Kashmir. Snow capped peaks are close by towards north east and East from here and these mountain ranges are less
troubled by cross border Pakistani terrorism like the Kashmir valley is. In terms of amenities etc. You'd be able to find
Subway, Mc-Donalds and Cafe coffee day in city limits and the highway towards Punjab has good American styled
eateries and food joints. As for the Desi folks, the city is a cultural cousin to Punjab and all the maal masala, Desi milk
and lassi. Yeah! The whole deal of it is available. You would also find Kashmiri goods here and there is no dearth of
Kangris and Pashmina Shawls and what have you may.

Dogra Rajput palaces, temples, forts, ancient sites.. The city has a very rich history and has a unique Pahari flavour to
it. Do your research before travelling and you should be able to plan accordingly." - Singh , Delhi, 1 month ago
