THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT

(NDM)
Date: 4th February, 2017

PRESS RELEASE

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) condemns the continued targeting of innocent

Chollo civilians in the (Shilluk) Kingdom by the genocidal and dictatorial regime of Salva

Kiir. Yesterday on the 3rd February, as part of its military offensive against the opposition

forces, the government troops shelled Wau-Shilluk targeting the internally displaced persons,

captured it and burnt it down. All this resulted in the death and wounding of many civilians.

This callous and barbarous act created unprecedented dire humanitarian conditions for the

IDPs who are currently scattered in the bushes around the area. The most vulnerably affected

segments are the children, women and the elderly.

Since the start of fighting in late January in the Shilluk Kingdom several activities of the

humanitarian agencies that used to provide assistance to the internally displaced people in

Wau-Shilluk and its vicinity have been seriously disrupted. The United Nations have

suspended key emergency services, such as management of health clinics and provision of

water, including UN Humanitarian Air Service to Malakal. Once again the National

Democratic Movement (NDM) calls upon the region and the international community to

provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the suffering people in the Shilluk Kingdom.

The current wave of violence in the Shilluk Kingdom and other parts of the country is

indicative of failure by the regime and its ruling party, the SPLM, in addressing political,

1
social and economic ills in the country. The corrupt SPLM political and military elites are

responsible for the gross human rights violations and the continuation of spade of violence in

South Sudan since the eruption of conflict in 2013. It is therefore incumbent upon all South

Sudanese political forces to form a broader alliance to save the country from total collapse

and Balkanization. The government in Juba and its ruling party are too deformed to be

reformed and its only through the utilization of all revolutionary tools that South Sudan

could be saved from political and social disintegration.

Long live the struggle of our people

Long live South Sudan
