The year 2016 Product Architecture Design Master EERO
INTRODUCTION 3 module has been unique in many ways. Compulsory MIETTINEN

This year the collaboration with the Finnish high tech
company BENEQ Oy gave the students a technology Aalto Arts

LUMINEQ HOME CONCEPT
When moving towards increased
urbanisation, the workplace
shifting from offices towards
homes and the increased product
connectivity, Lumineq technology
can contribute a technology-
free, in-house living environment.
By hiding visible technology
(products) and offering
integrated functions in furniture
or other elements can make life
more simple and enjoyable.
Lumineq can contribute
within the Home of the Future
by combining their existing
technology with new materials,
new functions and new
technological applications.
WHY THE LUMINEQ HOME?
The solution to the housing
vision is to get rid of visible
displays and the accompanying
technology, which makes the
application of LED displays not
being preferred.
Lumineq technology can already
be integrated within glass
surfaces, displaying information
without the need for using visible
displays anymore. In the future,
the working principle behind
this technology can be applied
together with materials other
than glass.

on earth and it is estimated that
in 2020 there will be 50 billion
connected devices around the

WALL TILES
A wall with Lumineq technology
can turn into a piece of art,
enhancing the atmosphere
within the living room. This can
be achieved by letting the wall
show artistic patterns that match
the rhythm of the music being
selected in the music library.
The interactive wall is driven by
the Lumineq wall display modules
and can either be mounted in
front of the wallpaper or behind
the wallpaper. Mounted behind
the wallpaper, the tiles behave
like a regular Lumineq display
whereby the wallpaper makes
the wall look like a regular wall.

sure the display tiles can shine
through it, enabling the wall to

The heating and a cooling
element are integrated in the
table to heat or cool specific
parts of the table. These elements
are subsequently covered by
a control display and are then
covered by the thin layer of
wood veneer that also covers the
Lumineq display.
DRESSER
When putting a valuable item
into the dressers shelf the
front surface can be touched,
subsequently indicating whether
the dresser is locked (showing
X) or unlocked (showing O).
The dressers top surface acts as
a light switch with an integrated
dimmer, whereby the technology
is integrated at the top of the
surface. The user can interact

The door that is displaying the

the door is finished with a thin
lacquer layer.
MUSIC LIBRARY
Music libraries such as Spotify or
Apple Music can be used through
furniture-based displays. One can
enjoy the technological benefits
of their electronic devices while
still enjoying a living environment
that is largely free of the devices
visible presence.
SOFA
The sofa wirelessly charges
mobile devices by making contact
between the sofa and the device
which contributes to move more
freely in the house of the future.
The wireless charging function
is achieved by integrating an
inductive charging module and
adding an extra surface layer on
top to maintain the sofas natural
look.

We envision that in the future
cities and technology will grow
and green spaces will be rarer.
So there will be an even higher
demand for natural spaces where
people can have the possibility
to learn about natural processes,
understand ecosystems and grow
their own species.
CONCEPT
Our concept consists of a
community greenhouse that
integrates an aquaponics

system. This system combines
aquaculture and hydroponic
agriculture in a symbiotic
environment, giving the
possibility to grow fishes and
plants in a sustainable system.
USER
The community greenhouse is
aimed for people interested in
ecosystems that want to learn
more about these. It also offers
the opportunity for growing and
or studying different species.

WHY LUMINEQ DISPLAYS
For this purpose, Lumineq
displays are important due to
their transparency, discreteness
and durability. They give us the
possibility to display information
about the species on transparent
surfaces, make this information
integrated in the environment
and disappear when not needed.
And as the displays are very
resistant and durable they are
also suitable for being applied
on the glass walls.The displays
will show information about the
species and their needs, helping
hobby growers and scientists to
monitor what they are growing,
making the journey for visitors

WHY LUMINEQ DISPLAYS?
For the workspace concept Lumineq displays are important due to their
transparency, discreteness and durability.For the different products
we created, we need to display information on transparent surfaces
and integrate this into the working environment. When information is
not needed, the displays can be turned off and simply be part of the
workspace without disturbing. Also the durability is a promising feature
making an investment in a better workspace more reasonable.All the
information on the displays is updated through an app according to the
needs in the specific workspace.

IMPROVING PUBLIC SPACES
In designing new products
that would incorporate Beneq
displays, our team KIWI systems
chose to focus on public spaces.
From roads to hotels and bars
and from education to tourism,
we explored various settings
and topics in which people have
to navigate a space that is not
inherently personal or customized
to their needs. We wanted to
tackle the confusion and lack of
information felt in new spaces
and the mundanity of repetitive
events such as conferences. On
the other side of the scale, we
explored some new and exciting
situations around learning and
discovery that had the potential
to be enhanced. We developed
several product ideas around
these themes and eventually
narrowed down our focus to
two new Beneq product lines:
Viewdeq and The Muq. We
introduce these product lines
over the next few pages, with
examples of product offerings.

to design unique and versatile
shapes for all our glassware
items. Through bi-quarterly
partnerships with animation and
typography designers, we will
continuously provide new and
exciting offerings for display
options. Our first planned
collaboration would be with up-
and-coming student artists from
Aalto University for a collection
of playful yet practical ways
to display time and schedule
management.
For conference organizers, we
will offer a full event package of
accessories and mementos to
provide to their guests, available
for rental. Among those items,

accompanying each guest
with scheduling info, updates,
and directions. Our integrated
luminescent displays will be
informative and always clearly
visible, yet discreet.

Beneq technology is reliable and durable in extreme
temperatures, moisture, vibration, and chemical
exposure. These strengths are impactful in situations
that save lives: especially in frontline emergencies
and science research.
Our concepts include the interior
ofambulances, fire rescue trucks, and
theglassware in researchlaboratories.
We were also mindful of the business case when
choosing our product areas. At the moment, Beneq
technology requires a high unit cost and replacement
cost. We saw this as an opportunity rather than
a disadvantage. In the public health sector, items
are purchased carefully and dont get disposed
frequently. The value for money is measured not
only by the initial set-up cost but also by the long-
term benefits. The high cost of Beneq product is
justified by the benefits it brings over time to the
health professionals and their work.
We believe the Beneq display can provide
exceptional value in saving lives in more efficient
and effective ways.

AMBULANCE

Our team visited Kallio Fire
Station in Helsinki over 2
days and interviewed 2 senior
paramedics at the City of Helsinki
Rescue Department while
observing different types of
rescue vehicles.
CURRENT ISSUES
Typically when an ambulance is
dispatched, a patient is either
treated on site, inside the
ambulance, or is transported
to a hospital depending on the
severity of the medical situation.
In all these cases, a laptop and
Lifepak which is a portable
monitor/defibrillator device, are
used and moves with the patient.
When a patient is wheeled into
an ambulance, the laptop and
Lifepak are positioned at their
docking stations.
Currently when a paramedic
provides treatment while the
patient bed is in the reclined
position, the monitor is not visible
in the line of sight. Another issue
is that the small screen sizes of
the Lifepak and the laptop are
inadequate for paramedics to
effectively monitor the patient
or share information when there
are multiple treatment personnel
inside the ambulance.

fire rescue truck will improve
the communication between
the fire lieutenant seated at the

is easier to communicate when
both parties see and hear the
information at the same time.
The displays can be used to
share live streaming of data from
the scene to the crew, the chief
and other rescue vehicles. For
example, the data can include
floor plans with heat maps or live
thermal imaging from a camera
at the site. Other information can
include databases required for
hazardous materials and vehicle
extrication. This information will
help the rescue team plan the
best route at the site and prepare
for the upcoming challenges.

Beneq is a global company and
about half of its sales comes
from the display business.
The transparent displays are
rather new and yet small part
of it. When we started doing
the background research and
brainstroming, we were especially
interested in the direction Beneq
is heading as a company as well
as the potential opportunities
it has. Where to go with the
display technology? And how to
serve people through displays in
the future? To offer insights for
these questions we decided to
research megatrends and future
visions.

Globalization is closely related
to urbanization and to the ways
people live and consume in the
future: According to estimates,
70 per cent of the global
population will live in cities by
the year 2050. The biggest and
most rapidly growing megacities
are located in Asia and Africa.
Aspects related to administration,
infrastructure and social cohesion
are emphasized.
Climate change is affecting
everything and the world
needs solutions that supports
the sustainable development.
Sustainability crisis is mainly seen
as a concern with many complex
challenges but at the same time
it also provides big opportunities.
Sitra points out that the
behaviour of citizens, regarding
the sustainability crisis, impacts
mobility, housing and eating.
THE BACKGROUND OF THE
BENEQ WORLD
We approached the design brief
from Beneq by developing a
strong future scenario including
the Beneqs advanced display
technology. Our proposed
ideas are part of the created
futuristic system and they are
communicated through the
Beneq World.
It is year 2035. The definition
of work has changed due to a
technological unemployment.
Humans are no longer essential
for keeping up the society.
They have more time on their
hands than ever before. In a
context like this, the mental
well-being, happiness as well
as meaningfulness needs to be
considered in order to humans
feel satisfied. When the work
in its traditional meaning isnt
offering this meaningfulness

anymore, there is a need for new
activities.
To support the mental well-being
of people, the role of hobbies
is changing. As people focus on
self-actualization, they have a
chance to become experts and
talented individuals in their areas
of interests and skills. Through
the new sensible infrastructure,
the robots are the important

them towards meaningfulness.
