OBJECT DESCRIPTION (INCLUDING DESCRIPTION OF PARTS)
The object is a dark amber, glass jar with an attached metal lid. For the purposes of description, the jar can be divided into
two sections: the base and the neck. The base of the jar is a standard cylindrical form. A paper label is wrapped around the
base. The label is bright orange with a yellow circle on two sides containing an illustration of a woman in traditional Swiss
clothing, and the product name printed in light blue (See Markings for details). The neck of the jar sits above the base and
narrows considerably. It is fluted in shape. The neck widens again as it approaches the mouth of the jar. The mouth of the jar
is threaded, as is the inside of the lid, allowing it to twist on. The lid is made of metal and is coloured the same orange as the
label. There is white lettering on the top of the lid (See Markings for details).

HISTORY
The jar was likely manufactured by Consumers Glass Company in the early 1980s, as the makers mark on the bottom of the
jar matches the companys. Ovaltine was created in Switzerland in 1904 by Dr. Georg Wander. Ovaltine arrived in Canada in
1910 as a European export, with a company office located in Toronto.
This Ovaltine product was either made in Don Mills or Peterborough. An Ovaltine Food Products plant was opened in
Peterborough in 1930 at the corner of Park and Landsdowne. Peterborough was chosen for its location because of the
abundance of fresh water, and its picturesque landscape which would attract prospective employees. The original plant
employed fifteen people, but by 1976, after some additions, approximately ninety people worked there. Production of
natural Ovaltine ended at this location sometime between 1976 and 1984. In 1988 the plant was sold to a private owner and
renamed United Canadian Malt. United Canadian Malt closed in 2015 due to the closure of the CPR line that supplied the
plant. The building still stands today, and is being rented out.
