Thank you for having purchased this bank of instruments for Xils-Lab PolyKB II.

This document will try to help you to get the best out of your brand new patches. Here youll find :

Installing POLYKB II Xils-Lab Asterods Bank(s)

a) To install the Library, first unzip the archive anywhere on your HD.

b) Launch the POLYKB II in your host.

c) At the top left of the PolyKB, click on the little arrow located in the bank menu to open a drop down menu

In the drop Down menu, choose the IMPORT BANK item :

This will open your standard OS browser, point to the location where you unzipped your archive and finally
choose the Epkb file.

Once the import process is completed, the new instruments will be immediatly available in your PolyKB II.

Browsing PolyKB II Analog Bag Soundbank

To test the library just select in the bank menu the name of the bank you want to browse : Analog Bag 1 or 2.

Tip : You can browse your new soundbanks and filter the instruments by sound designer for example (instead of
category of instrument ) :

Just select author as criteria in the second filter area. On the above example, you can browse all the patches
created by Peter Schelfhout, a brilliant Sound Designer who also worked for the reknowed Virus Series, in
Analog Bag 2.

POLYKB II Tips and Tricks.

Midi controllers (Modulation Wheel, BC, etc) . Velocity. Real time Automation
with POLYKB II.

In all cases, please note that we have assigned to the Modulation Wheel and/or AfterTouch what we thought was
the most usefull and musical modulations for the instrument.

Some instruments are VERY velocity sensitive while some others wont use velocity at all (ie emulations of old
analog devices, or Organs). We suggest you play the instruments at different velocities to figure out how it
affects their overall sonic character.

Initial state of a preset ( How to revert to after direct CC automation )

Even with the all the direct modulations provided on the PolyKB II, you will probably end one day or another to
perform direct assignations of Midi CCs to parameters, to be able to make additonal real time modulations, or
sophisticated automation tracks.

As the Midi CCs will sweep thru the entire range of the parameters possible values, chances are that you might
have trouble to come back to the original state of a preset.

To avoid this the usual method is to look at the current value of the parameter you wish to modulate, then record
a small midi clip wich will contain only this value.

You can now revert to the orginal preset whenevver you need to by just C/P ing this midi clip before the
plPolyKB II you want the preset to be reinitialised.

OR : Just reload the preset.

Note : Please note that the Modw Wheel settings are saved within each PolyKB II patch.

Instrument global volume

In theory weve made all that was possible to ensure an instrument wont overload while moving a macro knob
(mainly using volume compensation techniques), and, moreover, keep an acceptable gain.

This said, we cant fully garantee that any combination of the all real time features will not result in the sound
clipping. So we suggest here again that you put a limiter on your POLYKB II channel in your Daw, or on the
main output bus, in order to protect both your ears and equipment.

Weve calibrated all presets in order to give them a standard volume gain.

Enhancing POLYKB II paches and Mastering POLYKB II Cpu demands

Brightness : The reason why some patches have many hi-frequencies content is to propose the most expressive
playing possibilities for average velocities and for all types of keyboards. Another reason is that you can always
remove hi frequencies on a mixdesk with a Hicut filter. But you cant recreate them.

Polyphony : If youre confronted to a note steal problem, wich is likely to happen for instruments with a long
release, while combinig two or more oscillators and unisson, just increase the overall polyphony of POLYKB II.
Be aware that it will eat more cpu.

Cpu Eater : All Analog Bags instruments have been programmed to be playable on a PIV single core 3 Ghz
computer. However to achieve this goal, some compromises had to be made.

As a result if you experience note stealing you should increase the Polyphony settings.

Tip : If youre confronted to note stealing and that your computer doesnt allow you to increase the polyphony,
just use the following trick :

Divide your tracks into two separate midi tracks, wich will contain each aroud half of the total polyphony of the
original midi track. Then just record each of the midi tracks to 2 separate audio tracks. Then just send thsee two
tracks into a stereo bus.

About POLYKB II Delay Stage and settings : How to Record Time FX on

separate Daw tracks

We might want to record the POLYKB II FX on separate tracks of a Daw. ( To compress the delay then add
another external reverb on it, wich is impossible to make using only POLYKB II )

The answer is easy, but youll need to make twice a render (No freeze !!!) of the instrument. First zero the output
of the delay and record the dry sound on an audio track. Then put the delay dry/wet parameter to 100% (fully
clockwise) and render the delay only on a second track. You now have two separate tracks on which you can
apply different delay, compression, EQ, or reverbs.

Delay Settings in Analog Bags Sound Library

As POLYKB II doesnt come with an onboard Reverb unit, some Asteroids patches use the Delay unit to
compensate this and provide a sensation of spPolyKB II and depth when you play them while browing the
library, as the recreation of an acoustic scene is very important for instruments like Keys or Pads when you play
them for the 1rst time.

However in some cases, the delay settings will become redoundant if you took the care to connect an external
reverb to POLYKB II stereo output.

We therefore suggest that you somewhat lower the mix wet part of the Delay settings (or sometimes even nullify
them) when using this configuration : PolyKB II + reverb on aux bus.
