1. Liquid water at 200 kPa and 15C is heated in a chamber by mixing it with a
superheated steam at 200 kPa and 150C. Liquid water enters the mixing chamber at a
rate of 4.3 kg/s and the chamber is estimated to lose heat to the surrounding air at
20C at a rate of 1200 kJ/min. If the mixture leaves the mixing chamber at 200 kPa
and 80C, evaluate the rate of entropy generation during this mixing process.

3. Steam enters an adiabatic turbine at 7 MPa, 600C, and 80 m/s and leaves at 50
kPa, 150C, and 140 m/s. If the power output of the turbine is 6 MW, evaluate the
isentropic efficiency of the turbine.

1. Combustion gases enter a gas turbine at 627C ad 1.2 MPa at a rate of 2.5 kg/s
and leave at 527C and 500 kPa. It is estimated that heat is lost from the turbine at a
rate of 20kw. Using air properties for the combustion gases and assuming the
surroundings to be at 25C and 100 kPa, analyse the exergy destroyed within the
turbine.

100C to 500 kPa in an adiabatic expension valve.

3. A 0.8 insulated rigid tank contains m0 3 1.54 kg of carbon dioxide at 100 kPa.
Now paddle - wheel work is done o the system until the pressure in the tank rises
to 135 kPa. Analyze the actual paddle - wheel work done during this process and the
minimum paddle - wheel work with this process could be accomplished assuming T
= 289 K.
