Welcome to the unit on Concussion Assessment Tools. Prior to completing this unit, you should have reviewed the basics of
audio: a concussion- what it is, the signs and symptoms, and the mechanisms of injury. If you have done this, its time to talk
about concussion assessment tools. Please note that based on organization or school requirements, some tools may or
may not be used. It is important to understand that each of these tools should be utilized as only one part of a
comprehensive assessment. That is, there isnt one tool that is more important than another. Concussions are complex
and vary from individual to individual. Lets get started!

Transcript of Assessment can be performed both at baseline and after injury. Ideally, all athletes should have a baseline score. This
audio: baseline acts as a normal score that is completed when an athlete is healthy and prior to the sports season. It will serve as
a comparison in the event that an athlete suffers a concussion. Baseline scores are better than normative values-averages
of a particular demographic- because they are specific to the athlete taking the test as opposed to being an average for that
particular demographic. During a post-injury assessment, various concussion assessment tools will be utilized to determine
if the athlete is ready to begin their progression back to academics and physical activity. Post-injury assessments typically
take place at various times during the recovery process.
Have you ever had a child who sustained a concussion? Do you recall if he or she completed any particular testing or
assessment?

Transcript of Time to get down to business. There are five different assessment tools in this toolbox. Theyre now represented by the
audio: icons above the box. Click on an icon to be taken to a summary of that assessment tool. Being familiar with these tools will
help you identify different items that could be examined while performing a concussion assessment. When youre done, Ill
perform a simple knowledge check. Keep returning to this page until all the icons have a green check mark over them.
Once you have finished learning about all these tools, you will be allowed to see a brief animation/video showing how
these tools can be integrated into a concussion assessment. After that, its one final quiz and youre done!
