Fallingwater, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is located above a waterfall in rural Pennsylvania and marked a turning point in Wright's career during the Great Depression. The commission took place in the 1930s, one of the worst times for architecture. According to lore, Wright procrastinated for nine months before drawing up the complete plans for Fallingwater while the patron drove to meet him. Robert Smithson's earthwork Spiral Jetty, located in Utah's Great Salt Lake, uses over 6,000 tons of basalt rocks in the shape of a 1,500 foot long coil winding into the water. It was donated to the Dia Art Foundation by the artist's wife.

Frank Lloyd Wright, Fallingwater is cataract on a rocky hillside deep in the rugged forest of Southwestern Pennsylvania, some 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, is Americas most famous house. The commission for Fallingwater was a personal milestone for the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, since it clearly marked a turning point in his career. The mid- 1930s were among the darkest years for architecture and architects in American history; the countrys financial system had collapsed with the failure of hundreds of banks. Almost no private homes were built. Perhaps the most famous tale to come out of the lore of Fallingwater is the improbable story that Wright, after receiving the commission procrastinated for nine months until he was forced to draw up the complete plans while his patron was driving the 140 miles from Milwaukee to Taliesin. Robert Smithson's earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) is located at Rozel Point peninsula on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake. Using over six thousand tons of black basalt rocks and earth from the site, Smithson formed a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide that winds counterclockwise off the shore into the water. In 1999, through the generosity of the artist Nancy Holt, Smithsons wife, and the Estate of Robert Smithson, the artwork was donated to Dia Art Foundation.
