A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN


IN ENGLISH G-8

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. define idiomatic expressions;
b. appreciate the importance of idiomatic expressions and its usage in
communication; and
c. write an essay using idioms.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Idiomatic Expressions

Materials: Cartolina, manila paper, marker, construction papers,
bond paper, scissors

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary activities
Opening prayer
Greetings
Pick up some pieces of papers
Arrange the chairs
Take a seat
a. Drill/Review
Title: Guess it, Win it!
Within five minutes, the students are instructed to come
in front voluntarily and identify the pasted sentences whether
it is a fact, opinion, or inference and give a brief explanation.

b. Motivation
The students are instructed to solve the mathematical
word problem individually. This is the word equation:

B. Presentation of the topic
a. Activity proper
The students are instructed to have five groups. They will
be given five envelops with some scrambled words inside.
They are required to arrange those words into sentence
within 2-3 minutes and paste it on the board. They will
select one representative to give the meaning of the
underlined words in the formed sentence.
b. Analysis
An idiom is a peculiar use of certain words and phrases
or expressions which, from long usage, have acquired a
particular meaning.
Idiomatic expressions are a type of informal English that
have a meaning that is different from the words in the
expression.
c. Abstraction
What do you mean by idiomatic expression?
How can we find meaning from the idiomatic
expression?
Can we use idiomatic expressions in our daily
communication with others? In what way?
Is it important for us to know about idioms? Why
or why not?
d. Application
Title: Find me, Im lost
The learners are instructed to have one representative
in each same group. They are given 2 minutes to match the
idiomatic expressions to its meaning written in the strips of
papers by pasting it on the board. Rating would be 5-1. Five
points will be given to the first to paste the correct match
followed by second to fifth.

IV. EVALUATION
In a one fourth sheet of paper, the students will answer the following:
Instruction: Give the meaning of the idiomatic expressions underlined in
the sentences according to your own understanding. Write
it before the number of each item. Two points each.
1. I will clean my room when pigs fly.
2. This assignment is a piece of cake.
3. Wow! Its raining cats and dogs out there!
4. To make the long story short, this is what happened.
5. No! You are barking at the wrong tree! Its not him.
V. ASSIGNMENT
In a one short bond paper, the students are required to write an essay
with two paragraphs about their memorable experiences. Each paragraph
must contain 3-4 sentences for 20 points.
