Laboratory 4: Plastic Limit Test

I. Objective
To determine the liquid limit of the soil

II. Materials

Moisture can
Porcelain evaporating dish
Plastic squeeze bottle with water
Spatula
Triple beam balance
Ground glass plate

III. Procedure
1. Put approximately 20grams of a representative, air-dry sample, passed through
No. 40 sieve, into a porcelain into a porcelain evaporating dish.
2. Add water from the plastic squeeze bottle to the soil and mix thoroughly.
3. Determine the mass of a moisture can in grains and record it on the data sheet
( )
4. From the moist soil prepared in Step 2, prepare several ellipsoidal-shaped
soil masses by squeezing the soil with your fingers.
5. Take one of the ellipsoidal-shaped soil masses (Step 4) and roll it on a ground
glass plate using the palm of your hand. The rolling should be done at the
rate of about 80 strokes per minute. Note that one complete backward and
one complete forward motion of the palm constitute a stroke.

6. When the thread is being rolled in Step 5 reaches in. (3.18mm) in

diameter, break it up into several small pieces and squeeze it with your
fingers to form an ellipsoidal-shaped mass again.
7. Repeat Step 5 and 6 until the thread crumbles into several pieces when it

reaches a diameter of in. (3.18mm). It is possible that the thread may

crumble at a diameter larger than in. (3.18mm) during a given rolling

process, whereas it did not crumble at the same diameter during the
immediately previous rolling.
8. Collect the small crumbled pieces in the moisture can put the cover on the
can.

9. Take the other ellipsoidal soil masses formed in Step 4 and repeat Steps 5
through 8.
10. Determine the mass of the moisture can plus the wet soil ( ) in grams.
Remove the cap from the top of the can and place the can in the oven ( with
the cap at the bottom of the can ).
11. After about 24 hours, remove the can from the oven and determine the
mass of the can plus the dry soil ( ) in grams.

V. Table
Can no. A B C D
Mass of can (g) 26.59 26.59 26.00 26.00
Mass of can + moist soil, W2 (g) 59.90 60.40 62.20 60.00
Mass of can + dry soil, W3 (g) 52.90 50.80 53.20 53.30
PL (%) =
26.61 39.65 33.09 24.54

VI. Calculations

Formula used:

A = ((59.90 52.90) / (52.90 26.59)) x 100 = 26.61 %

B = ((60.40 50.80) / (50.80 26.59)) x 100 = 39.65 %
C = ((62.20 53.20) / (53.20 26.00)) x 100 = 33.09 %
D = ((60.00 53.30) / (53.30 26.00)) x 100 = 24.54 %
