Lab 5 Measuring Work and Power

Worksheet

Your Name: Trey Cross

1. Define work. What is its unit?

Work is using a force to move an object. The unit for work is the Joule.

2. Define power. What is its unit?

Power is the amount of energy it takes to perform work. The unit for power
is the Watt.

3. Write down two examples of forces that do not do work. Explain why they do
not do work.
1. If a science professor pushes a wall and it doesnt move, then the force is
not doing work because it does not produce motion.

2. If somebody holds up a weight, there is no work being done because

there is no motion.

The table below lists several forces, the distance moved by these forces, and the
time taken for this to be done.

4. Calculate the work done and the power generated in each case.

F (N) Distance (m) Work (J) Time (s) Power (W)

150 1.5 225 J 10 22.5 W

200 2.2 440 J 11 40 W

250 1.2 300 J 24 12.5 W

300 0.8 240 J 15 16 W

500 10.5 5250 21 250 W
