Slow Food Hunter Valley at the Maitland Show


Childrens activities on Friday Feb 17

Lemon workshop- a hands on experience connecting students with a range of sources of lemon
flavour including native plants demonstrating biodiversity and activating the sense of smell
Touch and smell lemon grass, lemon verbena, lemon myrtle, lemon gum (citrodora), lemon
leptospermum, lemon thyme, lemon balm
Read a narrative about each plant that tells about their use - culinary and or medicinal. Rate in
order of preferred smell, write a description of one or two of the plants.
Taste a cold lemon tea made from lemon verbena and lemon grass
Watch a demonstration of cooking lemon rice and taste it

Pulse mosaics: hands on exposure to a range of pulses, exploring their shapes and colours
Students feel and look at a wide variety of pulses and choose an outline to fill in with the pulses.
Students may stick the pulses onto the cardboard outline if they wish.

Spice workshop- hands on workshop where students handle a range of whole and ground spices and
relate them to their own food experiences
Students visit spice table and investigate labelled, whole spices
