11. (a) (i) A cubical block of 30 cm edge and weight 530 N slides down on
a plane inclined at 28 to the horizontal surface on which there
is thin film of oil of viscosity 0.25 103 N-s/m2. Determine the
terminal velocity that the block attains if the oil film thickness
is 0.02 cm. (8)
(ii) A wooden block of rectangular section 1.5 m wide and 3 m deep
and 6 m long floats horizontally in sea water. If the specific
weight of wood is 0.64 and density of sea water as 1025 kg/m3,
determine the volume of liquid displaced and the position of the
centre of buoyancy. (8)

(b) (i) A U-tube manometer measures the pressure difference between
two points A and B in a liquid of mass density . Calculate the
pressure difference if both pipe contains water and U-tube
contains mercury.
(8)

21
(ii) Classify the fluids based on the shear stress variations and
represent them in a graphical form. (8)

12. (a) Derive the Hagen-Poiseuille equation for a steady laminar flow in a
closed conduit. (16)

Or

(b) Derive the Bernoullis energy equation for a steady irrational fluids
and state the assumptions used.
9 (16)

13. (a) The thrust F of a screw propeller is dependent upon the diameter d,
speed of advance v, fluid density , revolutions per second n and
coefficient of dynamic viscosity . Using Buckingham-Pi theorem
21
show that it can be expressed by the equation (16)

F = d 2 v 2 { / ( vd ), (nd ) / v} .

diameter for the first 100 m, 320 mm for the next 90 m and 250 mm
for the remaining 75 m. The water surface in the upper reservoir is
17 m above the lower one. Calculate rate of flow (i) considering minor
losses and (ii) neglecting minor losses. Take friction coefficient as
0.0048 for all the pipes. (16)

15. (a) (i) Find the power required to drive a centrifugal pump which
delivers 40 lps to a height of 20 m through a 150 mm diameter
and 100 m long pipeline. The overall efficiency of pump is 70%
and friction factor f = 0.015 for the pipeline. Assume initial
