The Testimony of Dr. N. Jerome Stowell

THIS STORY T E L L S liow a startling experi-
ment helped lead a Scientist, engaged in top-
secret work, to turn from Atheism to Christ.

conversion, surely as great as. that. of
Saul of Tarsus! Dr. N. Jerome Stowell
.was a scientist working o n terrihle de-
vices for the destruction of mankind.
His previous experimenu made him
concerned in regards to his relation t o
God. His wife took a trip t o Oklahoma,
and in his loneliness he prayed to God
that He would malie Himself manifest.
Doctor Stowell knelt for prayer with
Don Throne and tiad a born again ex-
,perience. H e attended the Lor Angeles
Breakfast-Broadcast of the Full Gospel
Business Mens Fellowship and began
seeking the Baptism of the.Holy Ghost
which he received ti00 weeks later at a
Holy Chost Rally. His iuife felt she.did
not fit into this picture, but the im-
mensity and reality of her husbands

experience gradually became so appar-
ent to her that she too sought and re-
ceived , her Baptism, being under the
Power of God two and a half hours.
Doctor Stowell has given u p his work
and is busily engaged witnessing as to
the goodness and greatness of God.
I WAS ALMOST a devout atheist.
I didnt believe that God was any
more than a conglomeration of every-
ones mind put together and the good
that was there-that was God as far
as,I was concerned. As for the real,
all-powerful God existing and loving
us all, with power over everything, I
didnt believe that!

Then one day I had an,experience
that really set me thinking. I was
in a large pathological laboratory
and we were attempting to find .the
wavelength of the brain. We found
more than. just a wavelength of the
brain: we found a channel of wave-
lengths, and that channel has so much
room in it that the different wavelmgths
of each individual brain is farther sep-
arated .in identity than the fingerprints
on each individuals hand. This is a .point
we should remember: God can actually

A CHRISTIASS DYING THOUGHTS
W E R E RECORDED
We wanted to make an experimcnt to
discover what took place in the brain a t
the moment of transition from life to
death. We chose a lady whose family had
sent her to a mental institution, but who
had been discharged. The doctors could
find nothing wrong with her other than
the fact that she had cancer of the brain.
This affected the balance of her body only.
As far a s her alertness of mind was con-
cerned, and every other way, she was ex-
ceptionally brilliant. But we knew that
she was on the verge of death and she
was informed in this research hospital
that she was going to die.
We arranged a tiny pickup in her room
to ascertain what would take place in the
transition of her brain from life to death.
We also put a very small microphone,
about the size of a quarter, in the room
so that we could hear what she said i$:
she had anything to say.
WOMANS PRAYERS ASTOUNDS
F I V E SCIENTISTS
Five of us hardened scientists-perhaps
I was the hardest and most atheistic of
the group-were in an adjoining room
Dr. N. Jerome Stowell only a few weeks ago was a
Scientist ond on Atheist. Now he i s o Full Gospel

with our instruments prepared to register
and record what transpired. Our device
had a needle pointing to 0 in the center
of a scale. To the right the scale was Cali-
brated to 500 points positive. To the left
the scale was calibrated to 500 points
negative. We previously had registered on
this identical instrument the powcr used
by a fifty kilowatt broadcast station in
sending a message around the world. The
needle registered 9 points on the positive
side.
As the last moments of this womans
life arrived, she began to pray and to
praise the Lord. She asked the Lord God
to be merciful unto those who had des-
pitefully used her. Then she reaffirmed
He was the only power and that He was
the living power. She told God I-Ie always
had been and always would be. She
praised God and thanked Him for His
power and for her knowledge of His
reality. She told Him how much she
loved Him!
We scientists had been so engrossed
with this womans prayer that. we had
forgotten our experiment. We looked a t
each other and saw tears,streaming down
scientific faces. I had not shed tears since
I was a child.

500 POSITIVE AS GOD WAS PRAISED
Suddenly we hcard a clicking sound on
our forgotten instrument. We looked and
the needle was registering a positive 500
desperately trying to go higher, only to
bounce against the 500 positive post in
its attempt!
By actual instrumentation we had re-
corded that the brain of a woman alone
and dying in communication with God
had registered more than 55 times the
power used. by a fifty kilowatt broadcast
station in sending a message around the
world.

After this. we decided to try a case
very unlike the first one. We chose a man
lying in the research hospital. stricken
with a deadly social disease. His brain
had became atrophied to the very point

After long hours of waiting on
Customs officials at the borders of
Syria and Trans-Jordan, we cross the
most famous of all rivers, the Jordan.
Shortly w e are in Jericho. Close by
are the ruins of the Jericho of
Joshuas time. To the south lies the
fabulously rich Dead Sea, called Salt
Sea in thc Bible. Geographically, we
arc standing on the lowest spot of
earth. Jesus passed through here;
nearby I-Ie lifted Bartimaeus, blind
and begging, to sight and salvation.
This typifies the whole race, once as
low ,spiritually as we could get, blind
to eternal values and very poor;for on
this very road we had been robbed,
wounded and left half dead until Mercy
sent the Good Samaritan to lift up our
heads and bind our wounds, taking us
into His care.
Away to the west we see high moun-
tains, almost 4,000 feet above us. We
catch a glimpse of a number of spiraling
towers. What could these be? we asked
the native guide.
Jerusalem, he answered.
JERUSALEM-THE CITY OF 1HE:

Oh, could it be! Jerusalem, the city of
the Great King! Our hearts beat faster
in anticipating the city of the Bible. Up
and up we drive over the Jericho Road
to the city of David, Solomon, Isaiah,
Jeremiah, Ezekiel-a vast city even when
Rome was founded. No other city on
earth can boast of such prominence; for
almost four thousand years chosen of
the Lord, though rejected for an age. No
other city has had its name so often
recorded in sacred writ.
We have reached Bethany, near to the
hlount of Olives. Here indeed we are
well nigh overcome with the memories of

here. Then our attention is drawn to the
wretched poverty and misery of the prcs-
ent Moslem inhabitants, stretching forth
their hands, crying BACHSHEESH!
We are filled with mingled feelings of
pity and indignation a t the melancholy
conditions of the native population here
and through the Moslem countries. Our
thoughts turn back to the most sacred
events of all history. Very close by our
Saviour bade them farewell for a time;
from here He ascended up and was re-
ceived out of their sight to someday rc-
turn in like manner to this very spot.
From here He sent them back to receive
the Holy Ghost, fulfilling the Feast of
Pentecost that had been kept here for
long centuries, turning the Synagogue of
the nation into the church of mankind.
THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE
F r o m here Jesus looked over the city
of Jerusalem and wept, saying HOW o f t
would I have gathered you under my
wings, but y e would not. A few hundred
yards east we passed the site of Lazarus
tomb. Here again the Man of Sorrows
wept. Between us and the city lies .the
Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus p r a y
ed in such agony His sweat was a s great
drops of blood falling to the ground; such
love and pity could come from none less
than the heart of the Divine Father of
the race. On this very spot a thousand
years before passed Israels mightiest
earthly king, David-weeping, barefoot
and head covered, rejected, denied. What
more could we expect for Davids off-
spring and Lord?

Temple, where for a thousand years,

Jesus walked one day into this Temple

of His humanity, we have redemption

Him all fulness dwelt; on the other hand
God sees us in Christ and w e are accepted
in, the Beloved. He said Hc,,was greater
than the Temple and Solomon also.
I n a day or so we will return to this
blessed Mt. Olivet, but now we journey
to our place of lodging as the evening

THE WINTER of 1925 I received a

there on Sunday. On Sunday morning a
Northeast storm, with freezing rain, was
on but, like John Wesley, I would like to
make it and, in his journals, wc read
that God often miraculously got him

call a slide with a piece of board to sit on.
The storm increased as we went along
and, about a mile from the town, on the
highland called Bare Nead Hills the storm

were coated with a heavy coat of ice
and the wires were like large cables.
Suddenly, as I sheltered behind the
driver, I felt an urge to pray. As I began,
my k g l i s h was gone and I prayed as the
spirit gave utterance. The few words
were very sweet. Just a t that moment a
heavy wire broke to the windward of
US and came down to the ground with a
loud bang. My driver cried out If that
had hit the horse, it would have killed
her. When we got down to the valley
I told him that I was praying just as
the wire broke, that could have killed
both of us as well as the horse.
The next morning it was made more
real to me, when we heard that nine

seemed we could get no answer from the
Lord.
On the morning of the 13th of April,
1953, 1 prayed and waited upon the Lord.
I prayed again and again. The third time
I called upon Him, and waited before the
Lord, I heard from Heaven.
A scripture was impressed upon m y
mind. I turned to it, Numbers 13:1, And
the Lord s p k e . . . (unto Moses) saying.
I was amazed for I knew that verse was
incomplete in itself. So I prayed again and
asked Him what He wanted to tell me.
This time I waited in a spirit of expec-
tancy. Again a scripture was impressed
upon my mind. Zt was Numbers SS:S.
From that verse, these words fastened
upon my mind as barnacles on a ship,
. . . on the fifteenth dQy . . . on the mor-
day, and after looking at the calendar, I
reasoned, the fourteenth was tomorrow,
and the fifteenth the morrow after. Z be-
lieved the Lord!
Upon arriving home, I told my wife.
We began to await anxiously and expec-
tantly the fifteenth day.
On the morning o f the fifteenth, I went
to the post office, and lo, in the m i l w m
a check which relieved the strain that we8
upon us! We rejoiced more over the re-
ception of the check, however, because
it came in answer to the WORD O F THE

TIIE PROMISED LAND L,OOKED

LEM to Jericho. It is all downhill,
which is why the Scriptures say, A
certain man went DOWN to Jericho,
for if you go from Jerusalem .to Jeri-
cho you certainly go DOWN- yo^!
descend 3,000 feet in 25 miles. You
can almost travel the whole distance
on a .free engine. The road curves a
great deal and is .among hills, because
of which, even these days,, it lends
itself to highway robbery. It is quite
easy t o understand many being
beaten and robbed on this road. not
only in the year 53 but also the yeai
1953.
The only building you pass on the way
is the Good Samaritans Inh; on the left-
hand side of the road. The Dead Sen
is 1200 feet below sea level, and you seo
a sign. in .three languages a t sea level.
The Dead Sea is 26 per cent salt compared
with ordinary sea water, which is aboul
4 % per cent salt, That means it is about
a quarter solid. I t is impossible to sink
in the Dead Sea. A non-swimmer would
never drown there-you just cant go
under.

As you look across the Dead Sea, you
can seethe Mountains of Moab. You can
see the place where Sodom and Gomor-
rah once stood, and where Lots wife was
turned into a pillar of sall. You can see
Mount Pisgah where Moses stood and
viewed the Promised Land.
God showed the Children of Israel the
Promised Land before He took them into
it. He does the same to-day. The Promised
Land speaks in type of all the spiritual
experiences God has f o r u s these days.
God promised them the Land-He also
has given us exceeding great and precious
promises. There were Giants that sought
to hinder them-there are giants that
would seek to hinder us. I t was faith that
took them in-it is faith that will take u s
in. It was not the strength of their own
right arm, but the promises of God, that
gave them the victory.

WONDERFUL BUT THE GIANTS
LOOKED TOO BIG
Thirty years ago the writer read JOIUL
3:26.He caught a glimpse of trulh and
hope sprang up in his breast, when he
read of the possibility of having ever-
lasting life and never psrishinb. The
promised land looked wonderful, but the
giants in the way looked loo big and
formidable-it all seemed too good to be
true, and he wondered if such an ex.
perience was f o r him. I t all seemed f a r
beyond him, and, he wondered.
And yet, believe it o r not, thal land
was possessed and that viclory was won.
and, to-day without a doubt, the writer
stands on the other side of t h e battle-
ground, and knows of a very surety that
he has everlasting life and w i l l never
perish. That is wonderful and he is
glad.
CITIES O F THE PROMISED LAND
W E R E TAKEN ONE B Y ONE
Two years later the writer came across
another experience, which also - seemed
f a r beyond him and too good to be lrue.
He read in Acts 2:4 of what happened
on the Day of Pentecost. He was told
lhat lhis experience was for to-day, and
wondered. He was told it was for him.
and he wondered still more. I t seemed
far too wonderful to think that he wou1.d
ever receive an experience like the Early
Disciples received on the Day of Pente-
cost, and that he would speak i n a lan-
guage that he had never learned.
Well on May 1, 1925, the seeming ini-

on the other side of that battleground.
Like the Children of Israel of old, he saw
both experiences, including the giants,
before hc entered into them.
More recently, while in New Zealand.

Why, he thought, the flesh, W i t h its

trouble is, and victory here is victory
indeed. I t was possible to have other

nites, Moabites and still need victory over
Jebusites.
\TICTORY COMES BY BELIEVING-NOT
THROUGH STRUGGLING OR
FIGHTING
Victory to-day comes exactly as it
came of old. I t was.not by struggling or
fighting but believing. I-Ie remembered
the message of Hebrews I,, where we are
encouraged to rest after a perfect work
of redemption. as God rested ,after a
perfect work of creation.
He remembered how he had fought. He
remembered how he hacl struggled. He
remembered how he had prayed. He re-
membered how he had fasted and how he
had confessed. l i e remembered how he

longing for inward purity, and yet after

hearer inward cleanness and soundness.

And so he was faced with the alterna-
tive of whether he would believe what
God said, or whether he would believe
what he thought. felt and understood.
He eventually decided to believe Gods
Word regardless of everything else, and
what a victory this brought and what
a panorama of truth opened up beforc
him.

In closing let the writer say that. there
is one more spiritual experiEnce that he

giants of that land are big. 1t.doesnt
frighten him. and he has to confess that
as he looks a t it, it is no more impos-
sible of fulfilment than J o h n 3:16, Acts
?:I, and Galntinns 6:24 were in the years
gone by. When you have seen other
giants laid low and victories won, and,
land possessed, that -have been shown
you before you entered in, you have con-
fidence that the God who has brought you

Without Him, I could do nothing,

When I was four years of age the dread
disease of osteomyelitis, a bone infection
similar to tuberculosis of the bone, struck
my body in my leg just above the left
knee.
What could have been a tragedy was a
blessing to my life, and that of my par-
ents, as well as to a host of our friends
and relatives-for in nearly five years of
being an invalid, they all saw the mighty
hand of God work through the atonement
of His Son on Calvary. Within a few
hours after I was stricken I was in San
Antonios Santa Rosa Hospital and short-
ly thereafter three inches of the bone
above my left knee was removed. From
this time until I was nearly ten years of
age I never knew what it was to play
with other children or have a normal life.

N RECENT MONTHS there has been
phenomenal increase in destructive

ing raised as to what is the cause of this
unusual rise in the incidence of these
storms. Is there a prophetic significance
in these great disturbances of the eartws
atmosphere? We believe that there is an
answer to these questions. In this article
we shall take note of certain facts re-
vealed by the Scriptures which we believe
throw some light on this matter.

fice, a cyclone leveled buildings as high as
six stories. This was the first time in his-
tory a tornado had struck the center of
the business district of a large city.
Two years ago, while our offices were
yet in Shreveport, Louisiana, a tornado
of great intensity passed a mile or two
south of our location. Because the section
traversed was just outside the thickly
settled area, loss of life was not so great.
Certainly the storm passled too close for
comfort. One can only imagine the hor-
ror that comes to those who have been
caught in the path of these whirling hor-
rors. Perhaps the greatest damage which
occurred this year was in Flint, Michigan,
where the path of the tornado left a
destruction worse than war. Here the
storm cut a destructive swath 1,000 feet
wide and five miles long!
THE WHIRLING HORROR
STRIKES TERROR!
I know something of the terror of
the cyclone. Some years ago in Central
Texas, on a spring afternoon, we looked
up at the sky and suddenly recognized,

in the distance, the whirling horror, a
tornado. The rolling clouds were to the
Southwest-just the direction from which
a cyclone comes. At that moment the ad-
vance wind struck and we saw large ob-
jects being torn from their moorings and
g o flying past us at terrific spegd. I was
just a lad at that time and I, as well as my
companions, were not a little frightened.
Instinctively we jumped into our car and
headed down the highway away from the
direction of the whirling clouds. Behind
us, in the distance, a building blew down.
Despite our speed, debris was flying past
us on either side. Road signs had blown
loose and were flying through the air.
As we drove on, gradually the ominous
roar of the storm faded; but the cyclone
moving on erratically left death and de-
struction over a wide area. We were un-
harmed, but we shall never forget the
experience of those few moments.

to using it; the craving has returned. He
is bound again. If he will come forward,
God will deliver him again. He imme-
diately arose and came t O the front, tell-
ing how he had gone to a revival many
miles away, was delivered and, after sev-
eral months, tried a cigarette to see how
it would taste. He had been bound since.
That night he was delivered again. filled
with the Holy Ghost, and is still going on
with God. working in the church.
Of course, that was a word of knowl-
edge given to me before I went to Nash-
ville. Being delivered was another gift in
manifestation which we will study later.
In a dream one night I saw a woman,
who had been amicted for many years
crying for help. I started the next night
in a revival several miles away. There I
met this same woman. I t was a word of
knowledge, given by the Spirit. Her de-
liverance is another story.

Many times after a revival has gone on
for five or six weeks, the Spirit has
spoken to my spirit, The revival is over.
Other people could not understand why.1

to have the Holy Ghost and she had faith

show me where she worked. He gave me.
