DIGITAL 1200 BEST-IN-CLASS FEATURES Cd Re 2 NWS © PETE EC ee er LAL A =a ee =c ANT One ofthe staples of HOT ROD magazine was and sills ric Rick rman, the photographer who worked on staf from 1951 through 19% and who relentlessly covered the hot radding world. Especially during the early years his work represents the majority ofthe photography in ourarchives. There are countless stories about E. Rick Mann, as he ‘often was credited, including many about his 54 Corvette. For years, starting in 1957, it was his only ca, and rain or shine the topless Vette ‘ould be seen in and around Southern California racing venues, and yearlyat the Bonneville Salt Fats ‘ick purchased his early Vette asa fixer-upper, according to his son, Micheal. It wast long before he had ripped out the Blue Flame inline-six for a full-house Olds Rocket with an aluminum intake and three-twos, mated to one of B&MS first Hydros. Its believed that the Calahan Bros. Garage in the Silver Lake neighborhood of L.A.,one ‘of Rick’ many haunts, performed the swap. To allow forthe height ‘of the carbs, they had to cuta hole in the hood—a visual announce- ‘ment this was not a stock Vette. Rickman’ photo of the engine ran HoTRODCOMOMAY/ ‘on the covers ofthe Sept,'57 Car Craft and the first HOT ROD Magazine Yearbook in 1961 (One of Ricks car pals was the famous artist Von Duteh, whom hed often visit at Competition Motors, where Dutch was working. Dutch was difficult to get to know, yet he and Rick were very good friends, ‘so we asked Micheal what the attraction was. “It was definitely their politics—they saw eye to eye in that way!” says Micheal, “though as Dutch drinking increased, his politics got alot worse! One day out ofthe blue Dutch told Rick he needed a paintjob. Rick’ favorite color was blu, but thats probably all the direction he ‘gave his friend. What his Corvette got in early 1958 was a rather con: servative (for Von Dutch) yet tasteful dark metallic blue with light, blue scallops, accented with heavy white pinstripe panels ‘A nice car with a nice painjob needs an equally nice garage, but Rick never garaged his daily driver. The car sat in front of his Silver Lake house, just above Sunset Bid, night and day. With no top. Ever. Rick loved to be out in the wind, and refused to snap on the convertible top. Says Micheal, “My dad and I went to Bonneville one year to watch the first rns of Mickey Thompson's Challenger. Driv- ing there, it started raining hard, and Dad told me thatthe faster you ran, the drier you stayed. Atone point, we were flying through the desert at over 100 mph” Ultimately, the exposure to the elements and daily usage started to take toll on the paint and interior. Primer spots hid minor scrapes, and an accident added still more primer to the fading blue. The inte- rior was getting petty bad as wel, But there was more tothe Corvette than just looks. “Working for HOT ROD, my dad was always trying out clever gadgets” Micheal says, We know that Rick ran Scott injectors mounted outboard of a single Stromberg 97 carb at one point, and that his il filter was one ‘of those canisters you slip a toilet paper roll into, Rick swore that the intake water injection he installed made the Vette "run like a rainy day? justas the ads claimed, “Then there were the sel-balancing wheels. One of Rick friends TT n til ‘welded strap into the wheel rims, drilled a hole, poured 16 ounces ‘of buckshot into the void, then welded up the hole. From that day ‘on, the wheels stayed in perfect balance, though a a slow rll the car made a sh, sh, sh, sh sound as the buckshot shifted around, (Once Rick got the karting bug, he purchased a’57 Ranchero to ‘haul karts. The Corvette saw les use, and jst sat out in the street, ‘One evening when Rick came home, the Corvette was gone. The police eventually retrieved it, minus the triple carbs and intake. Rick stuck on an iron intake fora single four-barrel and continued driv- ing it sporadically. By 1961, he decided to sel his Corvete finding a buyer in a younglady who fell in love with its unique look. Says ‘Micheal, “One day she came back to the house and was abit irate. ‘The wiring under the dash had caught fire, and the car had burned to the ground, She accused my dad of installing faulty wiring reslt- ing in the meltdown” Of course nothing ever came ofthis, but Rick’ Corvette was history. Ironically, very few photos of it survive. Honestly Ido, But sometimes for a piece of men’s jewelry, crave something, tougher, something less... precious. Once I found tungsten, I knew it was the only metal for me. But that’s what happens when you fall in love, You'll understand when you put on this Tungsten Ring for only $99. Where has this metal been all my life? Named for the old Swedish word for “heavy stone,” tungsten is four times harder than titanium and 71% denser than lead. It’s so tough that when they need to cut and polish it they have to use diamonds... the hardest substance on Earth! DYNO DEUX Jack wasnt going tot the car's ‘tip to California be its only chance to shine. Back in San Antonio, he started diagnos ing the engine’ decided lack of power, and determined it was a timing issue—but with modern variable valve timing, timing issues mean more than ignition, ‘The Mast L99 engines make fall use ofthe factory’ dynamically adjustable cam timing, though it ‘was discovered that, when Jack bolted the water pump to the engine, a standard bolt used in place ofa flush bolt resulted in damage tothe cam phaser, With the hex bolts, there was about a £090 crash, rendering the phaser Inoperable and causing the cam tolock into the retarted position (the varable-valve-timing L99 usesa diferent water pump than the non-VVT LS3). The timing was fixed throughout the powerband without the ability toadvance or retard. This seem- ingly limited the spm capabili- ties (another dyno run in Texas found an extra 1,000 rpm), with the rejuvenated 183 putting ‘out $20 p to the rear wheels at 6,000 rpm. With 7,000 miles on the clock before our tests, Jack never had the car in a situation ‘here hard acceleration was necessary o even questioned. Any conventional center layout single throttle body or carbureted V8 intake manifold features longer outboard runners and shorter in- board runners, meaning that each valve event should occur at a different moment. COMP Cams? 4-Pattem Camshafts are the first series of cams designed to accommodate this, difference in length and avoid valves closing at the wrong times. The result is a large increase in both area under the Curve and stability at high RPM. The camshafts, built with lessons leamed alongside NASCAR teams, feature four different lobe patterns with one intake and exhaust design for outboard runners, and another intake and exhaust design for the inboard runners. While the four inboard cylinders are all the same grinds, the outboard exhaust open- ings are two degrees earlier, with outboard intake closings coming two degrees later. More Than You Thin! ~ - [Valvetrain deflections areal problem, and we've witnessadas much as 0.050 Inch In ost Ut atthe valve due to tif valvesprings flexing the body of ‘the rocker arm and pushrod. That was ust measuring ift withthe engine ona stand, Imagine how much moreliftis ost when the engine pm reaches ‘the stratosphere. Rocker-arm manufacturers sometimes combat this problem by designing morerati Into the body than what's stamped on It. Cariosity led us to bench-test 20 different %-inch stud-mount rocker armson a small-block Chevy. ll of them were advertised as having 1.6: ratio—and exactly one of them multiplied the lobe lift of the ‘cam tothe valve accordingly In fact, we witnessed ratios as high as 1.6681 when rotating the engine over with one racker in place, and the rest were about 1,650:1. You should be happy about that apparent little miscalculation. Ita perceived design fla, but it’ there on pur pose to make up for any deflection present inthe body ofthe rocker arm and the pushrod, as both flex under the load ofthe valvespring, the stresses of harmonics transmitted throughout the valvetrain, and elevated engine temperatures. Designing 0 into the rocker should result in a true 1.6:1 multiplication oflobe lift to actual valve life when the engine is running at peak rpm, although there’ no way to know for sure (even witha Spintron machine. ‘Theres more: we weighed, measured, and manhandled every rocker to see what the differences were and then called the manufac: turers and distributors to find out what each was made of. Te results were surprising. oo HoTRonKoNW2OT/MAY? TESTING ‘Westech Performance Group in Mira Loma, California, mocked up cach rocker arm using a lightweight, 1550-inch- diameter checking spring fitted to an AFR 220 cylinder head, A Comp Cams solid roller bumpstick with a0.436-inch-tall lobe provided the valve lif We verified the peak lobe lift with alfter-bore tool and a dial indica: tor, Another dial indicator carefully set atop the valvespring retainer recorded the peak valve lif. A calculator and simple math gave us the true rocker ratio, and a gram scale recorded the weight ofeach part. We used dial calipers to carefully measure the external dimen: sion of the axle, bearing, and nose wheel WHAT’S NOTIN THE CHART? The voltage regulator FLD terminal was the only other on junction in the circuit, so Reisner began to suspect the regulator itself was flaky." ‘unplugged the dark-green regu lator ump-to-alternator/battery voltage wire. The car nowhad 12 volts in both crank and ran, with no drop off. A quickcinternaladjustment-tab tweak by Retsner, and the voltage increased to 137 when charging at the FLD terminal. The head lights were now burning brightly Reisner cautions, "Be careful adjusting regulators, as they can hit 18 volts very quickly! Go up in small tweaks, slow and steady, replacing the cover after each adjustment until correct” ‘But even after regulator adjustment, voltage atthe igni- tion coll remained stubbornly Tow—only 10-12 volis—yet jumped right back up to normal ifthe regulator-to-alternator connection was again temporar: Aly unplugged. Something inherent in the Chrysler wiring scheme, although OK fora points system that doesnt need 12-plus volts in run, was stil preventing the MSD coil and electronic dis tributor from reaching their full ellicieney HoTRoncoW2013/M8Y/ Ta THE FIX: RELAY Faced with persistent low volt- ‘age, Reisner decided the best ‘expedient solution for fixing the problem once and fr all without ‘extensive factory harness mods ‘was adding an electrical relay to the crank and run circuit. One of the best ways to provide suf ficient juice toa finicky or high- il electrical consumes, isa type of heavy-duty, remote-control switch able to handle high-current accessories yet capable of being actuated by substantially ess current (typically, 9 volts or even less ‘ona 12-volt system). Relaysare installed between the power sourceand the electrical acces: sory requiring on/off power: When the relay is energized (turned on), high current required to operate the accessory flows from the power source through the relay and directly to the pat. Reisner installed a good, used, ‘common-as-dirt standard ISO- type five-terminal rela. They've been used for atleast 25 years injustabout everything with wheels and an electrical system. Ifyou want to go new, Jegs sells aive-terminal 40-amp-rated, waterproof ISO relay with a ‘mating electrical connector and wire pigtails for $1699 (PN 555-10556). The relay finally resolved the cil (+) low-voltage issue, supplying 135-13.7 vols tothe Blaster 2in run and over 115 volts even under prolonged crank. THEFIX: Another contributor to Town leyscold-stat problem was the Quick Fuel carb electri choke, ‘which hel never hooked up. Reisner explains, "Welength- ‘ened the original dark-bhie wire that originally ran from the ba: lasresstor area tothe coil and connected ito the carburetor choke” (twas no longer needed ‘with the rely) Even with the mysterious voltage drop atthe relays IGN terminal, this sill give the choke about 10. vols, sullcent for proper operation. co inawsnv/ \Wiesto find the cause, ‘The first major problem ound: Townley’sstock"IGNI” ‘Wire terminal an cavity Inthe ‘river ide firewall main bulkead ‘connectorhad melted (arrow). RESULTS ‘The car now starts strong both cold and hot, running well under all conditions. Even the ‘occasional miss under part throttlecruise has deared up (apparently it was caused by the constant low-voltage condition) One thing Townley may want to address inthe future isreplac- ing the Chargers old in-dash ammeter with a voltmeter That ‘old ammeter always reads high with his 80-amp alternator, and itmay eventually melt down because on a Chrysler. all main current has o flow through the ‘old gauge that was originally designed to handle much lower output TEARRED Correct multimeter uses critical for diagnosing electrical problems. ..well tha, and lots ofppatiencel Any terminals and splicesin high-output circuits should be soldered.
