Portfolio Assignments
Name:

In this course, you are required to maintain a portfolio about your


experiences in dance class. The purpose for these portfolio
assignments is to allow you to document and reflect upon your
experiences in dance class. It is also an opportunity for us to
communicate about dance class.

There are five (5) different portfolio assignments


Portfolio assignments will be submitted approximately every
two weeks
Keep all portfolio assignments together in a duo tang
All portfolio assignments should be typed unless otherwise
directed

Assignment Instructions:

Every culture in the world has unique characteristics that define


its society in terms of its social, economical and artistic attributes.
In this assignment, you will examine your own history and
ancestry and research the dance style specific to your heritage.

Step # 1: Family Tree


Create a family tree that traces your familial roots back as far as
your great-grandparents. Be sure to include their first and last
names as well as their nationality.

Step # 2: Research
Research a dance style that it specific to your heritage. If you
have a multicultural background, select one culture and examine
a dance style associated with that culture.

Step #3: Write Your Report


Paragraph One: A brief description of your ancestry
- Who is who and where they are from
- If you have a multicultural background, is there a nationality that you relate to
more?

Paragraph Two: Describe the dance style you have chosen to research
- Where and when the dance is performed
- Describe the movements in the dance
- Music
- Costuming

Paragraph Three: Experience with the style


- Discuss any experiences you have had performing/learning that particular
style and how it helped you as a dancer
- If you have no experience with this style, explain why you might want to learn
it and how it would benefit you as a dancer

Assignment Instructions:

On the day of the Musical Theatre Performances, you will make


detailed observation notes for one of the performances.

You will be asked to fill out a chart to record your thoughts and
ideas about the choreography, the music and the costumes as
well as provide feedback that the dancers can use to improve
their performances.

Assignment Instructions:

For hundreds of years, performers from around the world have


been using dance to bring awareness to social justice issues. In
this assignment, you will think about how dance could help bring
awareness to a social issue that is important to you.

Step # 1: Choose Your Issue


Be sure to select a social issue that is important and relevant to
you.

Step #2: Brainstorm


After selecting your topic, brainstorm how you would create a
dance to bring awareness to this issue.

Step #3: Written Response


Write a reflection that answers the following questions:

Paragraph One: Social Issue & Rationale for your choice

- Why is it personally relevant/important to you?

Assignment Instructions:

We have spent some time looking at all the important


relationships in your life. Whether they are healthy or unhealthy,
these relationships impact who you are today and who you will

become in the future. For this assignment, you will share a story
of an influential relationship from your life.

Step #1: Choose your Relationship


Choose one relationship that you currently have or had in the past
that has had some impact on you. This relationship could be with
anyone in your life and could have a very positive impact, could
have a negative impact, or could have provided you with a
tremendous learning/growth experience.

Step #2: Story of your Relationship


Write a one-page story about your relationships:
- Talk about the relationship in general or refer to a specific
event
- Be sure to express how this relationship makes/made you
feel
- Talk about the impact the relationship has/had on you

Step #3: Songs say it best


Music, like movement, has the ability connect with our emotions.
There always seems to be that one song you play on repeat to
makes you think of a person or experience.
-Choose a song that you feel best represents the Story of
your Relationship.
- Include the title of the song and the artist
- Write a brief paragraph explaining why you feel that song
connects to, or represents your relationship.
