Claude Debussy was born in France on August 22, 1862. He was the oldest of five children.
At the age of 7, Debussy began taking piano lessons from an Italian violinist. His talent was
quite evident and by the age of ten he began studying at the Paris Conservatory. At the con-
servatory Debussy studied music history, piano, organ, and composition. Debussy liked to ex-
periment with his compositions even though his teachers provided strict rules for composi-
tions.
In 1887 Debussy was introduced to Gamelan music. This is Indonesian music performed with
various bells, gongs, and xylophones. Some of these unique sounds are present in his compo-
sitions.
Claude Debussy composed pieces from many genres. Pieces such as his Arabesques and Clair
de Lune are still famous today and featured in some movies. Childrens Corner is another set
of works that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma. This piano suite was based on
Claude-Emmas childhood toys.
Claude Debussy died on March 25, 1918. He is known today as one of the most influential
composers of the Impressionist period.
