Subject Areas Grade Level Lesson or Project Duration

Mathmatics & Special 2 25-30 minutes of general
Skills mathmatics class time
Technology Required
What software and hardware are needed for this lesson or project?
The teacher will need a computer and/or tablet device that can connect to an
overhead projector that will be set up in front of room for entire class to see. There
should be a minimum of 10 (1 device per every 2 students) computers or tablets in
the classroom to properly demonstrate this activity. All devices, excluding projector,
will need internet access, firewall protection permitted by school board, and access
to kahoot.it or the kahoot app on a tablet type device.

Lesson or Project Topic
What is the topic? What is the title?
Overall, this activity will allow children to use their knowledge from the classroom,
the textbook, and outside knowledge to assess what they are measuring, what metric
needs to be used to best explain the length or heigh of the item, and what tool they
will use to do so. This activity is called "Measurements and Me!"

Critical Question Addressed

What specific question(s) will be answered?
The students will be able to answer the following:
What types of measuring tools are required to identify the length of a specific
object?
What metric unit is used to define the length of the object being measured?
How do I round to the nearest unit in order to estimate the length of an item?
Lesson or Project Goals and Objectives
What will students experience and be able to do as a result of this lesson or project?
1. Students will be able to understand when to use and apply standard units of measurments.
2. Students will understand how to use proper measuring tools with appropriate items.
3. Students will be able to document and record measurments using whole digits and units.
4. Students will learn to explore their options and find the correct type of measurment to successfully find
an accurate length of an object.
5. Students will learn to interact and compromise with a partner in order to successfully develop a decision
during time limited activity.

Curriculum Connections
What specific curriculum learning outcomes will be addressed in this lesson or project?(TAKS)
SP.PK12.US.1.4a: Develop mathematical skills and/or computational fluency for everyday living, such as
money skills, estimation skills, time and measurement skills, and comprehension of graphs, tables,
schedules, and charts.
SP.PK12.US.4.1: Use technology and assistive devices as needed to communicate or enhance messages in
a meaningful and functional manner.
MAFS.2.MD.1.1: Measure the length of an object to the nearest inch, foot, centimeter, or meter by selecting
and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.

Technology Connections
What technology skills and/or goals will be addressed in this lesson or project?
1.Students will be able to properly navigate modern technology and applications on tablets and computers
to answer questions with their partners.
2.Students will understand the Q & A gaming technology incorpated within the Kahoot application on their
tablets or computers.
3. Students will be able to record data using the notes app on the ipad (if accessible).
4. Students will demonstrate safe computer use and directive skills when applying their data recorded to the
games and assessments composed by the teacher to end the activity.

Footnote: This lesson will be beneficial to students who require ESOL accomodations by demonstrating the
following:
1. The technology will be visually appealing and associate pictures with sight words.
2. The applications will involve the teacher reading each question aloud as the students read along and
reread for personal comprehension.
3. "Buddies" will be paired up in order for the ESOL students to ask questions, hear the words being
properly used in conversation, and understand visually how to associate items with their proper
announciation.

Lesson or Unit Starter

What will you do to introduce the lesson or project? Are the connections to the curriculum and technology
clear?
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will introduce the measurment topic and how to use each tool
using a detailed demonstration of each tool. This discussion and direction will begin to elaborate and
explain what the activity is going to be and who's partnered up with who (also known as their "buddy").
The connections to technology are clear and explained in full detail by the teacher. In the ideal classroom
setting, the mot advanced technology and training are applied. In the less privileged classroom setting,
rules are repeatedly addressed and materials are comfortably shared between students, either with their
buddies, or in rotations of larger groups if necessary.
Student-focused Activities
What activities will your student do during this lesson or project?
1. Students will first be introduced to the mathmatic terminology during a short lecture and demonstration
of each measuring tool and what the rules are when using these tools.
2. Students will split up into groups of 2 (with their assigned "buddy") and start at the closest station to
their desks.
3. Students will approach their first station and see their directions posted on the item to measure.
4. Students will collaborate with their buddy to decide which of the 4 measuring tools would be best to use
to achieve the most accurate measurement of the item.
5. Then, the students will need to determine what the length is and what the unit of measurment being used
is.
6. Students will then record their data on a sheet of paper (or on a tablet using the notes app, depending on
classroom availability).
7. Students will then rotate clockwise around the room until they have completed all assigned tasks at each
station.
8.When all groups have rotated and completed all 4 stations, they will retreat back to their desks and log on
to their tablets (1 per "buddy" pair generally works best. If unavialable, use 1 computer per group for this
part of the lesson.) and open their kahoot apps (if on computer, the webpage will be kahoot.it).
9. The teacher will begin the kahoot game and allow the students to all create "team names" with a math
theme after retrieving the game's game PIN.
10. While playing Kahoot, the students will apply the knowledge they have gained from the kinesthetic
measuring activity to now answer using the help of their "buddy."
11. Once the kahoot game ends, the students will put up their tablets (or log off from their computers) and
return to their desks.
12. The teacher will hand out a single "card" to each student. These cards are significant to that student
and cannot be exchanged or traded with another.
13. The teacher will then use the Plickers application on their smart phone to host this digital assessment
test using the question that were in the Kahoot game and the kinesthetic activity.
14. Students will use their cards to answer each question properly without the help of their "buddy."
15. After the assessment is over, the teacher can record the grades and properly evaluate student
achievement individually versus in a group. This assessment will conclude the activity.

Resources
Hardware, Software, Web, CD ROM Other (Print, Human, etc)
Hardware includes a projector, projector screen, Students will need a pencil, student desk, a
ipads and/or computers in order for each student to computer monitor and a "buddy" to measure.
access games and assessments. Software needed for Measuring tools will include yard sticks, meter
this activity includes the internet, firewwall sticks, measuring tapes, rulers. To record data, it is
protection, pop-up blockers, access to kahoot.it or best that students use pencil and paper (if ipads are
the kahoot app, as well as the software application not easily accessible for this part of the activity).
Plickers for student evaluation.

Student Assessment
How will you assess the extent to which the students have achieved the goals and objectives?
Post-activity, students will be quizzed via kahoot.it, remaining with their partners, and
answer questions using the data they collected from each station. This classroom game
will act as a "practice quiz" in order for the students to then prepare themselves to answer
questions in test form via the Plickers assessment application. Students will be able to
confidentally answer each question individually using this pre-test/post-test process.
