XI. WHOLE STORY

Chester checked his wristwatch. It was 5:00 in the afternoon. Looking at
his wristwatch it was more of a nervous gesture than a desire to know the time.
He was nearing the end of his journey. After so many days of searching without a
real clue, a big one dropped of his lap literally. Now he and his cousin were on
pick up on their way to his father house. A young man was driving and didnt say
much. Many years, he has waited for this day, but never actually planned what to
say or do, and now he is nervous.

Chester never knew who his father was. His Filipina mother, who died
when he was eight years old, didnt even give him his name. Then rummaging through her
things, he found an old picture of an American. At the back of it was an affectionate note signed
check under which in the same scratch was the word Mckinney is a place in Texas. Since then,
he was obsessed in finding him. He had so many questions to ask, but how? All he had was a
picture and the name of the city in faraway Texas. The mans name wasnt much help. Deep in
his heart, though, he knew that time will resolve everything.

At age fourteen, Chester had developed his passion for car racing. Brought
up by an uncle who had encouraged this sport, he was soon winning trophies for his triumphs,
when he won the national racing competitions, some men saw in him a potential to be an
international racer. They wanted him to trained abroad. Excelling of this sport answered of
prayer of getting into America. Not only that, he couldnt believe his luck when he learned that
he would be training in Denton, Texas, just a few hours away from Mckinney! It was a though
destiny had come to facilitate his meeting with his father. What if he isnt here anymore? His
cousin Cristelle asked when they were seated of a park in Mckinney. He had called her up just
before he left the Philippines, explaining what he planned to do asking for her help. Christelle
had gladly obliged, taking a few days off from her job as a nurse in Chicago.

Chester said, I dont know, really. They had gone around the city for some days
now showing the picture to people and asking if they know the man. No one knew Chuck. One
had taken second glance and said the man in the picture was familiar, but she couldnt remember
where she had seen him. It was pretty understandable. The picture was old, the man probably
changed considerably.

I wont give up looking for him. I have this feeling I will find him. All the events in the
past days seemed to push me there. It seems like a miracle. You being here and so near to finding
out the truth.

Chester smiled at his cousin. Thanks for coming. It would have been very difficult
for me. Like all the other events, you too are heaven sent.

Suddenly, a ball dropped on Chester lap. He looked up and saw a little boy
running toward him to retrieved the ball. Behind him an old man was trying to keep up.

I beg your pardon. I hope youre not hurt, the old man said when he finally
arrived. He bent down to catch his breath.

Its alright, Chester replied, returning the ball to the boy.

The old man stared at him.

Is there anything wrong sir? He asked.

Im sorry, I didnt mean to stare. You know, you sound so much like someone I
knew, except for the accent. And you look a lot like him when he was still young chap. He used
to come over to my house and did job to earn a few bucks. Well that was before he studied
medicine. Then, he was off to some African country, then another. It was three or four years ago
that the old man stopped his recollection. He saw the expression on the face of Chester and
Christelle. Chester held out the picture.

The old man looked at the picture and then at Chester. Are you Chucks son; the?
Chester wanted to shout out for joy but controlled himself. He asked the old man
so many things all at once and the old man answered him as best as he could. His fathers name
was Charles Henderson. Yes, he is a doctor, he did like to race cars. No he never get married
again. However, when Chester asked the old man where his father was and how they could reach
him, the old man became hesitant.

Where do we find his home? Christelle repeated

His mother ranch is over at the northern pasture, about fifteen minutes drive from
here. Ill have my daughter accompany you to the place. Can you come back tomorrow
afternoon? The man asked.

The old woman welcomed them in without asking who they are. She had gray
hair cut in a bob. Chester guessed her age to be somewhere between 60 and 65, but it was hard to
tell. She had the strength of someone younger than her age. She touched a mans portrait on the
wall of the living room.

Timed finally came. I had expected this visit and wished it would happen in my
lifetime. I wanted to tell you myself that your father was a good man. He gave up everything for
his love Mrs. Henderson said. She turned to him. You must be the only son he was had. I hope
you are not angry with him.

Mrs. Henderson, may I know where my father is? Chester demanded.

Im sorry, Chester. He died three years ago, his grandmother said.

It was so straightforward. A bucket of cold water thrown at him would not have
had the same effect. This wasnt the scenario he had imagined of how his meeting would
proceed. Should he be forgiving? Should he expressed his anger? Should he embraced him as
hed always wanted to do? But not this. He could feel a lump building in his throat. He run
outside and shouted.

Christelle followed him. She found him on the steps sobbing.

Charles lived in a village near the Kalahar in Botswana. He spent his final years
taking care of the Iwana people. It was Mrs. Henderson standing at the doorway.

When your father become a doctor, he vowed to himself that he would give his
gift of healing to those who most need it but could not afford it. Thus, he traveled around the
world organizing medical missions. When he came to our country, he fell in love with his
assistant nurse. They got married hastily, it seemed. However, your mother, Im sorry to say,
didnt share your father to go and though that having you would make him stay. She threatened
him that he would not see you again, if he left.

Mrs. Henderson sat beside him. I hope you dont resent your father. He did try to
look for you when we went back to the Philippines. However, your mother made true his
promise. I guess she was hurt as well Chester stood up. I didnt mean to trouble you maam. I
think it was a mistake coming here. Perhaps, my father didnt really

Look for me at all. Chester turned to go.

Another vehicle arrived just then. A dark aged man goes out and walked toward them.

Where do you want the groceries Luisa? I see youve got visitors, he remarked cheerfully. When
he was near them, he stopped in his tracks and put down the bags.

Youre Chester, he said. For the third time, Chester didnt have to introduce himself. He was
surprised when the man hugged him tightly.

Dont be surprised boy. Probably everyone in Kalahari knows who you are. Your father never
stopped thinking about you. He explained.

When Dr. Murphy came back, he had something grasped in his palm.

Chester, your father didnt have monetary wealth. Whatever money he had received, he had
given all of it to the people. He did have one valuable the doctor had at his palm and picked up
something from it.

A seed? Chester asked.

Yes, a seed. Thats the seed of kindness your father planted. Whenever you do good thing to
other just pass it. This seed and the mnage it carries must go around the world. Dr. Murphy said,
putting the seed in the young man palms, gently closing Chesters fingers ones the seed.

I hope in time you will understand your father. He was a great man. Dr. Murphy added.

Chester checked his headgear. It had been three months since he arrived in texas.

After this race, hed be going back home. He got into his vehicle, checked the control, and
looked at the rear view mirror yes, the seed was there. He touched it.

Ill in this for you dad! Then, he revived up the engine.
