POWER TURBINE ELECTRONIC (N2) OVERSPEED CONTROL SYSTEM

(250B17F/1) MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. General
The power turbine electronic (N2) overspeed control system is installed on the 250B17F/1 engine only.
Maintenance of the system consists of an inspection/check of the system and component replacement
procedures.
2. Engine Electrical Harness (See Figure 201)
A. Removal
(1) Disconnect harness clamps.
(2) Disconnect leads from the following locations:
(a) Electronic N2 speed pickup
(b) Electronic N2 solenoid valve
(c) Electronic N2 overspeed control
(d) Engine/airframe disconnect.
B. Installation
(1) Route the harness on the engine and make the following connections (straps on harness leads
identify connecting points).
(a) Engine/airframe disconnect
(b) Electronic N2 overspeed control
(c) Electronic N2 overspeed solenoid valve
(d) Electronic N2 overspeed pickup; tighten nuts to 1317 lb in. (1.51.9 N.m)
(2) Secure harness clamps (5 places). Tighten nuts to 3540 lb in. (3.94.5 N.m).
3. Electronic N2 Overspeed Control
A. Removal
NOTE: The electronic N2 Overspeed control is airframe mounted.
(1) Disconnect the engine electrical harness from the control.
(2) Remove three bolts, three lockwashers, six washers and six dampers; then separate the
control and grounding strap from the airframe (See Figure 202).
B. Installation
(1) Place the electronic N2 overspeed control on the airframe. Secure with three bolts, six
dampers, six washers, and three lockwashers. Position the grounding strap on the aft
overspeed control attachment bolt. The internal tooth lockwasher goes under the bolt head
(See Figure 202). Tighten bolts to 3540 lb in. (3.94.5 N.m).
(2) Connect engine electrical harness.

4. Magnetic N2 Speed Pickup

A. Removal
(1) Disconnect two harness lugs from pickup studs (See Figure 201).
NOTE: N2 speed pickups P/N 23052285 and subsequent incorporate wrenching flats on the
electrical stud spacer. When removing the retaining nuts from the pickup studs, use
a 7/32 inch wrench on the spacer flats for torque reaction.
(2) Cut lockwire and loosen jam nut.
(3) Unscrew pickup.
B. Installation (Cool Engine Only)
(1) Measure distance from high point on power turbine coupling nut to outer surface of receptacle
(dimension A, Figure 203); nominally 4.209 in. (106.91 mm).
(2) Measure distance from pickup tip to bottom of square mounting head (dimension B, Figure
203); nominally 5.085 in. (129.16 mm).
(3) Determine dimension C, Figure 203, using the following formula:
C = (BA) + 0.025 in. (0.64 mm)
NOTE: The nominal value for dimension C is 0.901 in. (22.89 mm).
(4) Advance pickup until distance from bottom of pickup mounting head to surface of receptacle
equals the value determined for dimension C within 0.005 in. (0.13 mm). Each full turn
advances the pickup 0.050 in. (1.27 mm).

(5) Tighten jam nut to 7090 lb in. (7.910.2 N.m). Recheck dimension C. If not correct, readjust
to correct; then lockwire jam nut. For P/N 23054634 exhaust collector assemblies, lockwire
from the jam nut to the cooling air elbow fitting.
NOTE: N2 speed pickups P/N 23052285 and subsequent incorporate wrenching flats on the
electrical stud spacer. When installing the harness lug retaining nuts on the pickup
studs, use a 7/32 inch wrench on the spacer flats for torque reaction.
CAUTION: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION STUDS OF THE N2
SPEED PICKUP. TIGHTENING BEYOND THE SPECIFIED AMOUNT MAY
DAMAGE THE N2 PICKUP.
(6) Connect harness lugs to pickup studs and tighten to 1317 lb in. (1.51.9 N.m).
5. N2 Overspeed Solenoid Valve
A. Removal
(1) Disconnect engine electrical harness from the solenoid valve.
(2) Disconnect the air tube from the solenoid valve.
(3) Remove the two nuts and bolts; then separate the overspeed solenoid valve from the
horizontal firewall shield. (Right hand side when looking forward.)
(4) Remove the union from the solenoid valve. Discard packing.
B. Installation
(1) Lubricate packing and install with the union in the N2 overspeed solenoid valve.
(2) Position the overspeed solenoid in the bracket. Secure solenoid with two nuts and bolts.
Tighten nuts to 3540 lb in. (3.94.5 N.m).
(3) Connect the air tube to the union at the solenoid valve. Tighten coupling nuts to 80120 lb in.
(9.013.6 N.m).
(4) Connect engine electrical harness to the solenoid valve.
6. Inspection/Check
A. Engine Electrical Harness Check
CAUTION: DO NOT MAKE AN INSULATION TEST OR PLACE A HIGH POTENTIAL ACROSS
CONTACTS 1 AND 2 OF THE ENGINE/AIRFRAME DISCONNECT PLUG OR
ACROSS CONTACTS 1 AND 2 OF THE N2 CONNECTOR PLUG.
(1) Check the harness by making a continuity test and an insulation test of each circuit (except as
noted in CAUTION above). The insulation test shall be made from each circuit to all other
circuits, including shielding, and to the shell of each connector. The test shall be made using
1000 volts ac. The test leakage shall not exceed one milliampere. An alternate test may be
made using 500 volts dc. Resistance shall not be less than 1.25 megohms.
(2) Make a diode test using a low voltage (1 to 5 volts dc) indicator lamp. Check between
contacts 1 and 2 of the overspeed solenoid valve connector plug; with 1 positive and 2
negative the lamp should not light. With 1 negative and 2 positive, the lamp should light.
B. N2 Overspeed Control Check
Check the function of the power turbine electronic N2 overspeed control system in accordance with
para 7.C., 720000, EngineDescription and Operation.

C. N2 Speed Pickup Inspection/Check

Check the electrical resistance and inspect the physical condition of the N2 pickup as follows:

NOTE: Recommended room temperature for the resistance check is 25C (77F).

(1) Visually inspect the pickup and connector for physical damage. Inspect the pickup body for
cracks or deformation.

(2) The coils shall be insulated from the case by a minimum of 100 megohms at 500 volts dc.

D. N2 Overspeed Control

If the N2 overspeed control is suspected to be malfunctioning, perform PushtoTest check. With

engine operational, power turbine speed will govern at 70 5% when pushtotest button in cockpit
is actuated. Replace unit with a serviceable assembly for additional troubleshooting.

7. Cleaning Engine Electrical Harness

Clean the harness by wiping it with a clean cloth dampened with methylethylketone.
