BARNARD CONTINGENT FACULTY UNION REACHES

TENTATIVE AGREEMENT ON FIRST CONTRACT
Barnard Contingent Faculty-UAW Local 2110 (BCF-UAW) has reached a tentative agreement on its first
contract with Barnard College. The agreement was reached on Thursday, Feb. 16, at approximately 2:30
a.m., after a year of collective bargaining between the two parties.

The contract raises wages substantially, moving the per course rate for adjunct faculty to $7,000, rising to
$10,000 over the life of the five-year agreement, which will, in many cases, nearly double what part-time
faculty earn. The contract also establishes higher minimum rates for full-time term faculty who will earn at
least $60,000 starting in July of this year and will move to a minimum of $70,000 by 2021. The contract
establishes medical, dental, and vision benefits for adjunct faculty who previously were not eligible for any
health care from the College.

The agreement also improves job security for adjuncts, who have historically been appointed from
semester to semester with no assurance of re-appointment. It includes provisions for multi-year
appointments, separation pay for non-reappointment, course cancellation fees, professional development
funds, and sabbatical leave.

This agreement is a huge step forward for contingent faculty at Barnard and beyond, said
Siobhan Burke, a Barnard alumna and adjunct lecturer in the Dance Department. Adjunct
and term faculty are the majority of faculty at Barnard, and we deserve wages, benefits, and job
security that honor our commitment to teaching. This contract grants us that hard-earned
recognition. It is only right that a womens college, which champions womens leadership and
social justice, should join the national movement in higher education to create more equitable,
sustainable working conditions for contingent faculty. We are proud to be part of that movement.

The bargaining unit consists of approximately 200 faculty members each semester. The first bargaining
session between BCF-UAW and the Barnard administration took place on February 19, 2016. The pace of
negotiations in the months that followed was slow, prompting a strike authorization vote in late November
and early December, in which 89% of voters authorized the bargaining committee to set a strike deadline.

On January 23, 2017, after several more bargaining sessions, the union announced a strike deadline of
February 21.

After we set the strike deadline, the bargaining moved much faster, said bargaining committee
member Todd Rouhe, an adjunct in the Architecture Department who has taught at Barnard
for 15 years. When we showed that we were ready to strike if necessary, the administration finally
made an acceptable proposal that resulted in a settlement.

Throughout the months of bargaining, the union campaign gained momentum with growing support from
campus and community allies. Barnard students staged campus demonstrations, wrote articles for the
Columbia Daily Spectator, and even designed a zine about the history of labor organizing at the college.
Over 800 alumnae petitioned Barnards President and Provost, urging them to settle the contract. Members
of Barnards unionized clerical workforce, also represented by UAW Local 2110, joined demonstrations and
threatened a solidarity walk-out. New York elected officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, weighed in
urging a settlement. High-profile guests at the colleges 2017 Athena Film Festival Dolores Huerta, a
founder of the National Farmworkers Association, and playwright Eve Ensler made their support of the
union public. The Barnard/Columbia student group Student-Worker Solidarity contributed to many of these
efforts. The union used social media extensively, posting regularly on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

A vote to formally ratify the contract will be held in early March.
