This document provides instructions for a game called "King Catcher" to teach catching skills to small groups of pupils. The game involves organizing students into groups of 4-5 with one acting as the catcher. Students take turns kicking a ball to the catcher, and if caught, the roles switch. If dropped, the same roles remain. The goal is to track the number of successful catches. Progressions include increasing distance and adding defenders to apply pressure. Regressions involve standing closer for easier catches.

Organise pupils into small groups of 4 or 5 and set them up as image 1. o One pupil stand on one side of the grid, with the others in a line ready to kick. The first person steps up to kick the ball towards the catcher on the other side. If the ball is caught the kicker becomes the new catcher and the old catcher returns with the ball to the back of the line. If the ball is not caught, the catcher should remain and the kicker collects their ball swiftly and returns to the back of the line. o This gives the catcher more opportunity to practice catching with different pupils ability to kick, but also gives the kicker another chance to get their accuracy. Pupils should add up how many times they successfully caught the ball.
Progressions:
Set the area up as Progression 1
o Each team should start with varying abilities. o When each Game is finished, pupils communicate their scores. o The highest scorer moves up a court and the lowest scorer moves down a court o By the end pupils should be playing against someone with similar abilities and this will progress nicely to the Rugby Bench ball Game. Increase the distance between pupils kicking and catching. Add in a defender in between the kicker and catcher to add passive pressure to each action.
Regression:
Get pupils to stand closer, or as close as they feel they need to.
