PRACTICAL NO: 08

Practical No. 08
Object: Demonstration on Pulse testing.
Objectives: Pulse test have the same objectives as conventional interference to determine
whether well pairs are in pressure communication and to determine formation reservoir permeability
and porosity in the area of the tested well.

Procedure: The pulse test is conducted by sending a code signal or pulse sequence from an active
well (producer or injector) to shut in observation well. The pulse sequence is created by producing from
(or injecting) into the active well, then shutting in and repeating the sequence in regular pattern.

The reason for the sequence of pressure pulses is that we readily can determine the effect of an active
well in an observation well. Highly sensitive pressure gauges usually are required to detect these small
pulses which may have magnitude of less than 0.1 psi.

Both interference and pulse tests, also known as multiple-well testing, involve more than one well.
These types of tests can be used to obtain an adequate reservoir description for homogeneous (both
isotropic and aniso-tropic) and heterogeneous systems. Numerical solutions must be used to analyze
pressure transient data from heterogeneous systems. At the same time, it is one of the most important
and useful tests to understand the well behavior in a water flood and enhanced oil recovery projects.

The active well in a pulse test should be free of skin damage and well bore storage should be minimal.
Selectively testing wells around the active well will determine reservoir flow patterns and reservoir
anisotropy. The pulse test does not require as much time to run as the interference test, however, it
requires gauges with better resolution and is more complicated to run and analyze.

Advantages:
1. It disrupts normal operation much less than interference test does.
2. It lasts minimum time which may range from few hours to few days.
3. There are fewer interpretation problems caused by random noise.
