Ukulele Video Teaching Plan

Objectives

The student(s) will be able to learn the chords for Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen on

ukulele.

Standards

The video will address the Virginia Music Standards of Learning 6.2.3 (singing or

playing music in unison and simple harmony), 7.6.3 (identifying contemporary media and

technology used to create music), and 8.6.3 (using contemporary media and technology to create

music), as well as Anchor Standards #5 (Develop and refine artistic work for presentation) and

#6 (Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work).

Materials

I will need a ukulele, some sort of video/audio recording device, and video editing

software that can allow me to insert images of tabs as I play the corresponding chord.

Detailed process

To begin the video, I will play and sing the chorus of the song to give some context. Then

I will walk the viewer through the chorus, showing each chord one by one, then play the entire
chorus at a slower tempo and encourage the viewer to play along. I will then repeat the process

for the first verse, then play the entire first verse and chorus together. I do not believe taking time

to do the same for the rest of the song is useful, as the structure and chords are exactly the same,

just with different text. The objective of this video is to teach the chords, not all the lyrics.

Assessment

Unless I am with the viewer in person, there is no sure way to know if the viewer

successfully learned the song. However, it is possible to see a viewer post a cover of the song

and link to my tutorial video in the description, crediting my tutorial video as his/her learning

tool.

Adaptations

Posting the video to YouTube and making it public would allow for many different

people to view the video. In addition, I could make a similar tutorial video for guitar.
