 b. Procedure of the activity
The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will have an answer sheet, a copy
of the dictionary of genetic code, and the reference card.
Each group will act as a private detective who will investigate the death of a girl named
Iska. There are two suspects identified as Goku and Gohan. The description for each
suspect is indicated in the reference cards.
In order to see which of these two suspects is the real criminal, the students must
determine the mRNA, tRNA, of each strand of DNA extracted from the things recovered in the
crime scene. The suspect whose traits match with the decoded amino acid is the criminal.
After doing the activity, the students will answer the guide questions.

What is the basis for the type of amino acid produced?
What is the role of proteins in determining the trait of an individual?
How does the sequence of DNA nucleotides affects the traits or
characteristics of an individual?

The sequence of nucleotides in DNA directs the formation of mRNA.
The amino acid produced is based from the sequences of tRNA which is
then directed by the sequence of mRNA.

1. Cut out the DNA and RNA components on the pattern provided to you. For the DNA components, use
the following color code: phosphate = blue, deoxyribose sugar= green, ribose sugar = brown and
nitrogenous bases as follows: adenine = yellow, thymine = pink, guanine = violet and cytosine = red and
uracil = orange. For the RNA components, use the following color code: phosphate = blue, ribose sugar =
brown and nitrogenous bases as follows: adenine = yellow, uracil = orange, guanine = violet and cytosine
= red.
2. Bring these cut-outs, scissors, and tape tomorrow.
