NurseDoreenKendallisstartledasshepullsbackthedrapes.


Itwasnearly5AMonNewYear'sDay1970,whenMissDoreenKendall,apracticalnurseattheCowichan
DistrictHospitalonVancouverIsland,beganherusualmorningroundsinafourbedward.Shenoticedthatone
oftheelderlypatientsinherwardwasrestless.Decidingthatthepatientwastoowarm,shewenttoawindowand
partedthedrapestoletinalittleair.

Doreen,apracticalnurse,workedonthesecondfloorofthehospitalatDuncan,onVancouverIsland,British
Columbia,Canada.ShelivedinNanaimoandcommutedthetwentysixmilestoDuncan.

Asshepulledbackthedrapesabrilliantlighthitherintheeyes.Itwasstilldarkoutside,butabout60feetaway,
abovethechildren'swardtoherleft,therewasabright,giantobjectthatshesawveryclearly.

Theobjectwascircular.Shedescribedtheobjectintermsofsections.Thebottomwassilvery,likemetal,andwas
shapedlikeabowl.Therewasastringofbrightlightsarounditlikeanecklace.Thetopwasadomemadeof
somethinglikeglass.Itwaslitupfrominsideandshecouldseerightintoit.

MissKendallsaidthattherewastwomalelikefiguresinthecraft,onebehindtheother,facingtoherright,away
fromthehospital.Theoneinfrontappearedtaller,orperhapswaspositionedhigher,thantheother.Theirheads
wereencasedinclosefittingdarkmaterial.

Asshewatchedwithintensecuriosity,yetcompletelyfearlesssheclaimedthatsheneverfeltsopeacefulinallof
herlife.Sheevenwishedthatshecouldhavetalkedtothem.Shebecameawareofseeingmoreoftheinteriorof
thecraftandrealizedthatitwastilting.Inamomentshecouldseetoapointjustbelowtheirkneesandnoticed
theywerestandinginfrontofwhatlookedlikestools.

Theyappearedtolooklikefine,tall,wellbuiltmen.Theyweredressedintightfittingsuitsofthesamematerial
thatcoveredtheirheadsbuttheirhandswerebareandshenoticedhowhumantheylooked.

Intriguedasshewasbytheappearanceofthetwofigures,MissKendallfoundherinterestcenteredonwhat
lookedlikeaninstrumentpanelfacingtheoneinfront.

Themaninfrontwasstaringatthepanelasifsomethingveryimportantwasgoingon,andshewonderedifthey
mighthavehadmechanicaltrouble.Sheeventhoughttheymighthavelandedontheroofofthehospitalandthen
hadtroubletakingoff.

Shedescribedthepanelasaverylargeone,takingupalmosthalftheinterioroftheobjectandreachingnearlyto
thetopofthedome.Theinstruments,ifthatiswhattheywere,seemedtobeinsetinthechromelikemetalofthe
panelandtherewereavarietyofsizes.

ThetotalsightwassoabsorbingthatatfirstMissKendall'sthoughtswerelosttoeverythingelse,andfora
momentsheforgotMrs.FriedaWilson,aregisterednurse,wasinthesameroom.Whenshedidthinkofit,she
hesitated.Shefeltthatshemustn'tmakeanoiseordoanythingthatwouldbreakthetrendofwhatwas
happening.

Atthispoint,almostasifherthoughtswerebeingread,shesawthefigureintherearturnslowlyandface
squarelyinherdirection.

Heseemedtolookrightatherbutshecouldn'tseehisface.Hisfaceappearedtobecoveredbyadarkishmaterial
thatlookedsofterthantherestofhissuit.Shewascertainthathesawherbecausethenhetouchedtheotherman
ontheback.Whenhedidthis,themaninfrontreacheddownandtookholdofsomethinglikealeverbesidehim.
Hedeliberatelypusheditbackandforthandthecraftstartedtocircleslowly,stillclosetothebuilding,inan
anticlockwisedirection.

ThemotionseemedtobreakthespellforMissKendall,forthensherememberedMrs.Wilsonwasthereand
calledherover.

Mrs.WilsonhadnoticedthatMissKendallwasstandingatthewindowandwonderedwhatshewaslookingat.In
fact,shewasgoingovertoseeforherselfjustasMissKendallbeckonedtoherwhenshesawthisgreatbiglight
overthepatiooutsidethechildren'sward.Shesaidthatitwasquiteabitlargerthanacar.(Bytheestimateof
bothwitnesses,theobjectspannedawidthofaboutfivewindowsofthechildren'sward.Thisgaveitadiameter
ofatleast50feet.)Itlookedcircularinshapeandthefarsideseemedtobehigherthanthesidenearestthe
nurses.Itwasmovingaroundslowlyandthenitstartedtomoveaway.Theydidn'treallyseeanytoporbottomto
itasitwasalljusttremendouslybright.

Thetwothenrantothenursesstationandtoldthreeothernurses,whoreachedthewindowintimetoseethe
object,althoughitwassomedistanceawaybythen.Theobjectcircledseveraltimesandthenvanishedtothe
northeastathighspeed.
