EE 383V Homework #2

Due 09/19/2016 Monday

1. vs
Derive the Lorentz model using the engineering convention:
(, ) = {(, ) exp( + )}
(a) Find out the expression for susceptibility ()in rarified media described by a single
Lorentz pole {0 , , }
(b) Show that the imaginary part of the resultant refractive index also need to change sign
from the results in the class notes.

2. Optical properties of Aluminum.

Aluminum is often used in near-infrared plasmonics, due to its compatibility with CMOS
processes. Use the Lorentz-Drude model parameters from (Rakic, Applied Optics, 37, 5271).
Include your MATLAB or Mathematica scripts along with your plots.
Hint: Be careful of how plasmon frequency is defined in the formulae in the paper.
Judiciously use log-log and log-linear plots to show the main spectral features
(a) Plot the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, () from 0.01eV to 12eV.
(replicating the figure in part of the Rakic paper)
(b) Plot the power reflection coefficient from 0.01eV to 12eV at an air-aluminum interface at
normal incidence. (Hint: use the Fresnel equations with a complex-valued refractive )

3. Iso-frequency contours.
Plot iso-frequency contours for plane waves and evanescent waves in a metal for a given
frequency 0 (Hint: You may use normalized units, e.g. 0 /). Assume the system is 2D
with =0, i.e. only and need to be considered. Clearly label the parameters that
defines the contours (e.g. radius, intercept coordinates with the axes). Include your scripts
along with the plots. A unlabeled iso-frequency contour for a positive material is given
below as an example for your reference. Your results should look significantly different.
(a) for a lossless metal with = 5.
(b) for a lossy metal with = 5 + 0.1.
(Hint: will be complex-valued, so include both real and imaginary parts)
