B. E. (Civil) Examination April 2012

6112: Theory of Structures-II(GS)
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 80 Min. Pass Marks: 28

Note: Attempt all five questions. Part a, b, and c of each question is compulsory and
carries 2, 2, and 3 marks respectively. Out of parts d and e (7 marks each) any one of
them is to be attempted. Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.

1. a. Define stiffness and carryover factor for a prismatic member.

b. How is distribution factor affected by end condition and flexural rigidity?
c. What conditions causes a rigid jointed frame to sway? In sway type of frame what
additional equilibrium equations are required in moment distribution method?
d. Determine the end moments of the members for the frame shown in figure-1 by
moment distribution method. EI is same for all the members.
e. Using Kanis method determine the end moments of the members for the frame
shown in figure 2.

2. a. What are different lateral loads to be accounted in analysis of multi-story frames?

b. Define a substitute frame. How is it useful in approximate analysis?
c. What positions of internal hinges is assumed in approximate analysis for gravity
loads and why?
d. Analyze the frame shown in figure 3 by approximate method.
e. Using portal method analyze the frame shown in figure 4.
a. Define flexibility and stiffness coefficients.
3. b. Explain degree of kinematic indeterminacy of rigid jointed structures.
c. What are force and displacement transformation matrices?
d. Analyze the beam shown in figure 5 by force method.
e. Analyze the frame shown in figure 6 by displacement method.

a. What is a influence line diagram? How is it used in structural analysis?

4. b. Give an example of structure where rolling load analysis is done.
c. Sketch the influence line diagram for horizontal thrust for a three hinged parabolic
arch with support at the same level.
d. Deduce the influence line diagram for the shear force at the left support and bending
moment at mid span of a simply supported beam of span L.
e. Draw influence line diagram for force in member AC of the truss shown in figure 6.
a.
State Upper bound, Lower bound and Uniqueness theorems in plastic analysis.
b.
5. What is a plastic hinge?
c.
State the assumptions made in the plastic theory of structures.
d.
What is a shape factor? Deduce its value for a circular cross section.
e.
Determine the collapse load for a propped cantilever beam of span L subjected to a
uniformly distributed load w per m run. Plastic moment capacity of beam is MP.
