Thesis

Fashion protests on the use of fur and leather to make clothing is a problem addressed in many

nations around the globe. Some organizations that address this issue include PETA, the Humane

Society, and a few other small ones. Though many protests are very extreme and come across as

blatantly irrational, they have helped diminish the fur wearing population. In fact, some clothing

stores either diminish the sale of fur, or they will shut their entire store down. Each protest

presents facts on the anti-fur stand in history in many different ways and even to this day.

www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/sep/18/animalwelfare.clothes. Accessed 15

February, 2017.

This is a photo taken at a runway in 2005 by Dan Chung. The purpose of this photo was to show

the trend of fashion coming back onto the runway in the 2000s. The content of this photo is just a

person, whose face we cannot see, is walking the runway in fur. The value of this picture is it

helps come along with the idea that it still is an issue today, and that there are still protests today

that happen due to the rise in fur. There are limitations to this picture. We cannot see who the

person is, nor do we know if there was any instances that day just by looking at the picture.

Accessed 17 February, 2017.

This source is a photograph taken in January of 2006. The purpose of this photograph was to

show a protest that took place on animal rights of the use of fur and leather clothing. The content

of the photograph shows a bunch of people, that seems any age and gender. The people hold

signs about how animals deserve their fur, and do not deserve the abuse they do through due to

2
fur clothing being made. This is valuable to our research because it gives us a visual

representation to show on the protests that go on, and it also shows us the variety of people that

participate in these protests. The limitations of this photograph include that we do not know who

took the picture, when the exact date the picture was taken, and also the names and/or ages of the

people present in the photo.

PETAs Milestones for Animals: 1992. Peta, 18 Feb., 1992, www.peta.org/about-

peta/milestones/. Accessed 15 February, 2017.

This is a photograph taken in 1992 in Japan. The purpose of this photograph is to show the anti-

fur protest called Rather Go Naked than Wear Fur. The content shows two nude individuals

that hold up a sign in Japanese that translates into the English version of the protest. Also, you

see they are through a city due to the amount of people around them and the background that

surrounds them. This is valuable because it shows how the protests are worldwide, and it also

gives us more visual representation of protests that went on, even in the 1990s. There are

limitations to this photograph as well. We do not know who took the photograph, who the people

were, and how many others may have been with them as well. We do not know if this is an

individual protest or if there was more based on just looking at the photo.

This photograph was taken in 1994, and is one of the pictures presented in this time period. The

purpose of this photograph was to show the caging of animals that were stripped of their fur. The

content of this photo is there is multiple cages with numbers on them and little animals that are

not as visible as they could be. The value of this photograph is that it helps us show the harsh

mistreatment of the animals that were used for fur clothing. There are a few limitations to this

photograph. It does not tell us who took the picture, how long this has been going on, and what

they may have used to torture the ones in the photo.

PETAs Milestones of Animals: 1994. Peta, 1994, www.peta.org/about-peta/milestones/.

Accessed 15 February, 2017.

This is a photograph taken in 1994, and is one of the events that took place that year. The

purpose of this photograph was to show a protest that took place about a designer who made fur

clothing. The content of this photograph contains the words Calvin Kills FUR SHAME and

Calvin Klein Kills Animals. Also, there seems to be a huge fuss on the stage due to the protest

that was going on against the use of fur in this company. This is a valuable photo because it

shows us an example of violate protesting that went on and also, how serious these protests were

to many individuals. There are limitations to this photograph as well. We do not know how this

protest got started, who the people are, who took the picture, the exact date of the event, and how

many people were involved in this violate protest.

PETAs Milestones of Animals: 1997. Peta, 1997, www.peta.org/about-peta/milestones/.

Accessed 15 January, 2017.

This photograph was taken in 1997. The purpose of this photograph was to show the animal

cruelty that happened when they were used for fur purposes. The content of this photograph

includes an animal who has clearly been abused based on the facial expression of the fox. Also,

there seems to be fur off of the leg as well, showing that the fox was used for a purpose. This

photograph is valuable because it goes along with the background of how the people want to

protest for the rights of animals when it comes to the stripping of their fur, used for clothing

purposes. The limitations to this article are that we do not know the person who took it, and all

the circumstances that went into the torturing of the animal. We also do not know how many

other animals went through this entire process.

file:///C:/Users/011979501/Downloads/dks_20000404.pdf. Accessed 5 February,

2017.

This source is a newspaper article from 2000. The purpose of this article is to show another

protest as well as show the importance of fur/leather protests that go on in the world. The content

present in this article shows us how college kids react to the making of fur/leather clothing, and

how they react to this, which is through protests. The use of wearing a costume of the animal that

was harmed would show how they want them to be able to live freely without going through the

5
torture that they go through when being used for clothing. Also, when they dress like that, it

shows how much they care for the action. The article itself tells us the reason why they were

protesting against the making of leather clothing in the store, Gap, and also what they did to

prevent this. The limitation is that the press may have not gotten the full story of the situation and

could be using yellow journalism to favor one opinion than the full story, without putting their

own input into it. That is normally what writers tend to do in their stories.

This source is a picture of two ladies that are holding a sign that says Wed rather go naked than

wear fur in all caps. The two individuals seem to be naked, and the sign is what is covering their

bodies. On the sign, it has the PETA logo towards the bottom, which possibly indicates that this

protest was towards that organization, and what they have organized. Based on the background,

we can infer that this was taken in front of the White House, during the day due to the amount of

light present. This source is valuable to our theme because it shows a visual representation of a

protest that is against the use of animal fur in clothing. Also, it gives us a better look on what

people did in these protests. The limitations to this photo would be that we do not know if there

was any other individuals with them, and what time of day this protest was. We also do not know

if this was planned or if the two girls decided to do it on their own to go against fur clothing.

This source is a primary source because it is a photograph taken on the scene by Wollenburg, and

www.nytimes.com/1985/12/17/business/for-thriving-furriers-protesters-

pose-threat.html. Accessed 29 January, 2017.

The origin of this source is during the 1980s from an article on protests. The purpose of the

source is to show how people protested on the act of fur being used in clothing. This also

purposeful by providing information on certain facts about fur, and why the clothing was coming

back. The content that comes from this article helps the purpose of how protests on fur took a

stand throughout history, even back then. This article tells us why it strived, and then began to

tell us how many workers and customers begin protesting on the unlimited amount of fur coats,

scarves, etc. This is valuable because it provides us an example of protests to include in our

protest to once again tie into the theme. The source has its limitations. One is the fact that we

only get one perspective, which could be very opinionated, and one sided rather than looking at

is as a whole. Another could be that we do not really know the people involved, their gender, or

their age, so that widens the perspective on who exactly protests towards the use of fur/leather.

8
The origin of this source is 1990, and is shown in an article. The purpose of this article to give us

an insight to how fur protests began to actually affect fur being provided in stores. In this article,

a ski resort decides to stop selling their fur coats to stop any protesting to occur, but it still

happened due to the fact that they still were going to sell the product elsewhere. Also, the article

has comments on opinions of members selling the clothing, and a few other individuals which is

valuable because we get two sides of the story. This is also valuable because it shows the effect

on fur sellers ad how their products have to go elsewhere, where they may not be sold as much as

they were in the ski resort. The limitations to this source is that it was the immediate effect so

there is a small difference instead of a drastic one, and also there may be opinion put into the

arguments, which can make it invalid at some aspects both sides bring instead of fact.

fur-flies-on-the-catwalk-466726.html. Accessed 5 February, 2017.

This source is from 2006, and is an article. The purpose of this article was to provide another

example of a protest that occurred on the idea of using fur in clothing and as well as wearing it.

The content of the article is how fur protests were now taken to the runway and the effect that it

had on the celebrities, and the protestors. It also shows how big of a deal the protests were to

make it all the way to the runways. This is valuable in showing the effect to the people, and the

extreme level to how protests go as well. This is also valuable in providing another example to

how protesters against fur/leather clothing took a stand in history. The limitations of this source

9
is that the celebrities that get pelted with flour will not speak to people who want to hear what

they have to say about the whole ordeal, and we also do not get the full story. (More like the

sugar coated version so the celebrities do not get too trashed or embarrassed)

1992, www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/lynx-anti-fur-group-faces-extinction-

over-libel-loss-1565298.html. Accessed 29 January, 2017.

This source came from the UK in the 1990s, and an article. The purpose of this source is to give

insight of this protest group known as Lynx, on international levels. The content of this is to

show the impact of the organization and how they nearly drew an extinction to the making and

wearing of fur/leather protests. This is very valuable because it gives our project another focus

on how one huge group protested and made a huge effect on the selling and making of fur

clothing. The source is limited because once again, the author could have written in opinion, and

we do not have the full background of this organization, and if they have continued to do

anything. Another limitation is that it does not provide as much information as it could.

Freeman, Hadley. Fighting The Return Of Fur. Theguardian, 18 Sep., 2006,

www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/sep/18/animalwelfare.clothes. Accessed

29 January, 2017.

10
The origin of this source is from the news blog, The Guardian. The purpose of this source is to

give the perspective of an actual fashion artist against fur. The content of this article includes

how a celebrity from Britain is trying to ban fashion from the runway due to her disliking of the

idea on how animals get hurt during this process of making clothes out of their fur or skin. This

is valuable for the project because in the fashion world, it is hard to be against something and

find ways around using such material. Also, this is valuable because it will show the project how

even one person can try and find a way to take a stand for what they believe in. The limitation is

it only includes one fashion designer instead of a large group of designers. But, this article did

give a hunk of information to the return of the fur, and the effects with it.

Owen, Johnathan. The Fur Trade: Bloody fashion. Independent, 25 Nov., 2006,

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/the-fur-trade-bloody-fashion-

425837.html. Accessed 29 January, 2017.

This source has the origin of the UK in 2006, and is an article. The purpose of this source is to

regulate how fur is an awful thing to possess in clothes, especially with how the animals suffer

the most from this. The content of this article is how fur is returning to the nation, and the

different people that are starting to advertise these items of fur. It then begins to describe the fur

protests that came into play because of this. The value of this source is quite high because of how

the celebrities that used to be against fur actually are modelling it now. Also, it is valuable due to

the fact that it admits that animals are suffering so much from this, that it is ridiculous. The

limitation is that it focuses on specific celebrities targeting them when people may not actually

11
understand what is happening. Also, another limitation is the idea of how there was clearly

opinion made into this article, so it may not be fully factual, other than seeing what people really

think of the situation based on the way they talk.

Patterson, Jean. The Return of Fur: Once Near Fashion Extinction, It Is Roaming Runways

Again. Maninnature, 7 Jan., 1999,

www.maninnature.com/AFibres/Fur/fur1c.html. Accessed 5 February, 2017.

The source comes from 1999, and is an article. The purpose of this was to show when the decade

of protesting came to a halt, and fur fashion found its way to sneak back in. Also, the purpose is

to explain the difference of real fur and faux fur in stores. It seems to be giving people a choice

of what they want, but it still isnt good for the animals themselves. The website tells the furs of

the 1999 winter season and how, statistically, furs sell in the United States. The value of the

article is that it gives us a different perspective to use on why these protests were being made

about the use of fur clothing. Its limitations would be that it is on a blog-like website, so some

misspellings were made, and there will definitely be opinion added into this, so it makes the

argument stronger on one side than the other.

Unti, Bernard. Fred Myers: Co-Founder of the HSUS. Humane society, www.humane

society.org/about/history/fred_myers.html. Accessed 30 January, 2017.

This article is originated in the files at the humane society. The purpose is of mainly background

on the society that has helped millions of animals, and to provide us an insight to the founder of
12
the organization as well as why he would do this. The content includes what the organization

does and as said above, information on the founder of the organization. It is valuable because it

shows us something that was made to prevent harm to animals, and also provides background on

the beginning of doing something, no matter the issue. The limitation is that it is only one society

instead of many and the man has died since then. Also, a limitation is that it does not narrow

down on just fur. It is about animal harming as a whole instead.
