here and we are feeling it! Even
though we are numb from the
cold, Sportsman’s Gear is excited about the
year ahead and poised to bring you new
products and vehicle reviews in addition to
current happenings in the industry.

is a value-priced option with a long list of

Joining the Ram Rebel and Power Wagon,
the 4x4 Off-road Package rounds out the
brand’s enthusiast lineup and reinforces its
claim to being the “Off-road Truck Leader.”
Ram 2500 4x4 Off-road Package
A pickup truck has a lot of unforeseen
duties. Large front tow hooks add an untold
amount of versatility and allow the Ram
2500 to become a solid anchor point or
rescue rig. Larger fender flares in Black or
body-color help prevent whatever slings off
the tires from covering the side of the truck
with debris.
To handle the rough roads, Bilstein
monotube shock absorbers soak up the
bumps at all four corners and distribute
excessive heat that can be generated when
driving rough sections for extended periods
of time. The performance shocks are tuned
specifically for the weight of the truck and
take advantage of the exclusive five-link
coil rear suspension system, adding further
control to the axle.
The improved suspension is coupled with
all-terrain tires. The Ram 2500 4x4 Off-road
Package includes Firestone LT 275/70R 18E
OWL on/off-road tires for added traction.
Some models wear Firestone LT 285/60R
20E OWL on/off-road tires. The tires clean
themselves better than on-road tires by
allowing whatever finds itself in the tread to
break free under rotation, keeping the tread
clear to grip again.
Many trails, tall grass and mud holes hide
unforeseen impediments. These obstacles
generally reveal themselves during breakover
maneuvers. To prevent underbody strike
damage, the Ram 2500 4x4 Off-road
Package includes a transfer case skid plate

to address the lowest mid-point of the truck.
The new offering also includes standard
Hill-decent Control, borrowed from the
Power Wagon. Hill-descent Control allows
drivers to control speed down steep, rugged
grades with the buttons on the column shifter
– without the need for throttle or brake
pedals.
For added traction, the 4x4 Off-road
Package comes standard with a rear anti-
spin differential, which turns both rear
wheels in tandem when increased torque is
applied. The design automatically unlocks
the differential for normal on-road driving,
allowing the wheels to spin independently
for improved drivability.
Finishing off the truck is a large “4X4

extensive testing based on the most
challenging real-world driving conditions to
ensure capable performance no matter the
weather.
Marked by a dramatic hood scoop, the
all-new air intake system provides 60 percent
of the air to the Duramax diesel engine
from an inlet at the front of the hood. The
air provided to the engine is very close to
the outside ambient temperature and much
cooler than the air under the hood.
Cooler air helps the engine run better
under load, especially in conditions where
engine and transmission temperatures can

rise quickly. Running cooler allows the
Duramax diesel to maintain full power and
vehicle speed for capable trailering in even
the toughest conditions.
There’s also a ram-air effect from the
incoming air at highway speed that helps
pack more air into the engine. The air filter
housing also draws 40 percent additional
air from a dry location in one of the front
fenders. It blends with the cooler air from
the hood inlet before funneling into the
Duramax’s combustion chambers. This
assures the engine can breathe even if the
hood is completely blocked.
“The 2017 Silverado HD was engineered
to provide maximum utility for our
customers in even the most extreme
situations,” said Eric Stanczak, chief
engineer, Silverado HD. “While developing
this all-new induction system, we considered
our customers towing a maximum-weight
trailer through the Eisenhower Tunnel on a
hot, rainy summer day.”
At more than 11,000 feet above sea
level, the Eisenhower Tunnel, is the highest
vehicle tunnel in the world and one of the

highest elevations for any roadway in North
America.
Maximized engine performance requires
more than cool air; the air must also be clean
and dry. Accordingly, the functional hood
scoop includes a unique air/water separator
to ensure only combustion-enhancing dry
air is drawn into the engine. The air charge
enters an expansion chamber containing a
sharp, 180-degree turn on its way to the air
filter housing. That creates a velocity change
that causes humidity or mist to form larger,
heavier droplets that are flung centrifugally
against the outside wall of the housing.

while the air charge continues on to the filter

works well with water droplets of all sizes.

engine performance and even greater towing
confidence.”

Since 1988, RMEF and its partners
completed 558 conservation and hunting
heritage outreach projects in California
with a combined value of more than $42.2
million. These projects protected or enhanced
147,520 acres of habitat and opened or
secured public access to 15,289 acres.
RMEF uses TFE funding solely to further
its core mission programs of permanent
land protection, habitat stewardship, elk
restoration and hunting heritage.
Wildlife Habitat, History Permanently
Protected in Montana
A 320-acre property in southwestern
Montana, vital to wildlife and linked to the
pages of U.S. history, is now permanently
protected thanks to a successful collaboration
between the Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation, a conservation-minded family
and the U.S. Forest Service.

The former Holland Family Ranch is
located west of Dillon and was previously
an in-holding in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge
National Forest. It lies squarely on the Nez
Perce National Historic Trail, where Chief
Joseph led his Nez Perce tribe away from its
pursuers in 1877.
“We appreciate the Holland family for
reaching out to us to help conserve and
permanently protect this key stretch of
habitat,” said Blake Henning, RMEF vice
president of Land Conservation. “It is
especially rich in wildlife values.”
Elk use the property as calving grounds as
well as spring and summer range. It serves
as an important wildlife movement corridor
between the Big Hole River Valley and
the Continental Divide for elk, mule deer,
moose and black bear. It is also home to
Canada lynx, wolverine, a wide variety of
other animal and bird life, and includes more
than two miles of fisheries, wetlands and
surrounding riparian habitat.
RMEF recently conveyed the tract to the
Forest Service thus providing both new and
improved public access for hunting, fishing
and other recreational activities.
“This purchase is a perfect example of
how partnerships can conserve wildlife,
ecological, recreational and historic values,”
said Melany Glossa, Beaverhead-Deerlodge
National Forest supervisor. “Working together
with RMEF and the Holland family to be a
part of this legacy has been a really wonderful
experience.”
The Land and Water Conservation Fund,
Cinnabar Foundation, Montana Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Trust and RMEF
provided funding for the project.

Designed by Toyota’s CALTY Design
Research in Newport Beach, Calif., and with
user experience technology development
from the Toyota Innovation Hub in San
Francisco, the Concept-i was created around
the philosophy of “kinetic warmth,” a belief
that mobility technology should be warm,
welcoming, and above all, fun. As a result,
the concept was developed with a focus
on building an immersive and energetic
user experience. What’s more, Concept-i
leverages the power of an advanced artificial
intelligence (AI) system to anticipate
people’s needs, inspire their imaginations
and improve their lives.

Audi of America will debut the all-new
A5 and S5 Cabriolet at the 2017 North
American International Auto Show
Completing the new generation of the A5
family, the all-new 2018 Audi A5 and S5
Cabriolet will make their US debut at the
2017 North American International Auto
Show. With a fully automatic soft top that
opens in 15 seconds and closes in 18 seconds
at speeds of up to 31 mph and seating for
up to four, the A5 and S5 Cabriolet are the
perfect combination of design, top-down
driving and dynamic performance.
An open-air driving experience
The A5 and S5 Cabriolet feature a fully
electronic top that can be lowered using the
new one-touch opening function, in just 15
seconds, at speeds of up to 31 mph. With
the top up, the Cabriolet is designed for a
refined driving experience. The soft cloth top
complements the car’s design and delivers
outstanding acoustics thanks to effective
insulation. When opened, the top folds into
three layers and rests in a tray underneath the
luggage compartment thereby offering the
largest possible luggage space at all times.
Thanks to a smart mix of materials
and lightweight design, the A5 and S5
Cabriolet models are 40 percent more
rigid but lighter than their predecessors
(55 pounds for the A5 and 99 pounds for
the S5) and have increased in length and
width. That increase in size translates into
over an inch more front passenger shoulder
room (26mm) and rear legroom (30mm).

Drivetrain
models, the A5 Cabriolet comes equipped
with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated
to a seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch
automatic transmission that produces 252 hp
and 273 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60
mph in 6.0 seconds, an improvement of 0.6
seconds compared to the previous generation.
The S5 Cabriolet is equipped with a
re-engineered 3.0-liter TFSI® V6 engine to
produce an impressive 354 hp and 369 lb-ft
of torque between 1370 – 4500 rpm, and
sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, half
a second faster than its predecessor. The S5
is also newly equipped with an eight-speed
Tiptronic® automatic transmission that is
well suited for the low-end torque of the new
3.0-liter turbocharged engine.
Both variants of the Cabriolet come
standard-equipped with quattro® all-wheel
drive, offering enhanced agility through a
self-locking center differential, with a basic
ratio of 40:60 front to rear, and wheel-
selective torque control.
A redesigned front five-link suspension
with lightweight construction offers greater
steering precision and excellent handling
through optimized steering-rack placement
direct at wheel centers. Suspension tuning
enhancements have also improved through
the wider track and longer wheelbase.
Available dynamic steering (S5 models only)
offers a variable steering ratio that adjusts
based on vehicle speed and the Audi drive
select setting.
Interior & Exterior Design
The 2018 A5 and S5 Cabriolet models
mirror the coupe’s breakthrough design
language, featuring a wider, flatter
Singleframe® grille and longer, lower
hood lines that highlight the powerful
engines of the new A5 family vehicles. The
precise wave-design shoulder line is more
pronounced than previous generations and
wider wheel arches provide design cues
to the vehicle’s quattro® DNA. Three-
dimensional LED taillights with dynamic
turn signals offer a distinctly powerful look
and emphasize vehicle width.
The refined interior of the A5 and
S5 Cabriolet, with seating for up to four
standard, includes greater attention to
detail through functional refinements and
additional driver-focused technologies. A
three-dimensional decorative inlay trim
with climate control integration spans from
the door panels across the dashboard and
adds breadth and lightness. The available
20-speaker Bang & Olufsen® sound system
with 3D sound and two subwoofers offers
both an acoustic and visual highlight in the
interior.
Infotainment & Driver Assistance
The A5 and S5 Cabriolet offer the same
advanced infotainment systems as the A5
Coupe and Sportback models including
the available Audi virtual cockpit, MMI®
navigation plus, standard Audi smartphone
interface and newly available in-car Audi
connect® infotainment and security
features, supported by 4G LTE connectivity
(where available). With natural language
voice control and free-text search, A5
and S5 Cabriolet drivers can now control
infotainment functions more effortlessly and
intuitively. Standard safety belt microphones
for the driver and front passenger help
improve voice quality commands even with
the top down.
A full suite of advanced driver assistance
systems, including standard Audi pre sense®
