Statement of Facts & Argument
January 9, 2017
My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? These
questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them. (chapter 15) This quote
disproves the monster as the one who should be convicted for the murders of innocent people
and puts Victor even more at risk of being convicted for crimes against humanity because not
only has he created new life in an unethical manner, he is now responsible for the monsters
actions. The monster questions his being and does not know what is moral versus what is
immoral. He is like a newborn child and therefore does not have a conscience that allows him to
After creating the monster Victor says, A new species would bless me as its creator and
source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. I might in process of
time (although I now found it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the
body to corruption." This shows how Victor views himself as a creator of this monster and that
he thinks he is doing such great work through this experiment. He admits to creating new life in
order to make up for death and the suffering of humans, but he did so in an immoral and
unethical way. Not only did he create this monster in such a way that needs care and support,
he then decides to abandon it and disown his own creation despite his egotistical views on
himself when he first created it. "I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and
hellish triumph; clapping my hands, I exclaimed, 'I too can create desolation; my enemy is not
invulnerable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment
and destroy him.' (chapter 16) Victor disowning the monster only makes the monster even more
vengeful towards Victor and his malicious thoughts worsen over time. Victor leaving the monster
makes him feel lonely and he is not taught how to act in this world and he does not know right
from wrong making Victors conviction even more so plausible because Victor assumes
responsibility of this creature and should have raised it and taught it how to act and live.
