RE: Funding for Susan B. Anthony House in the FY 2017-2018 State Budget

Dear Speaker Heastie,

We are writing to respectfully request that $125,000 be included in our Assembly one-house budget proposal to support the
preservation and restoration of the Susan B. Anthony House in the Town of Greenwich, Washington County. Last year, with
your assistance, I was able to pass legislation (A.9781) that included the building in the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation, and
Historic Preservations resident curator program. The requested funds will be used to support the work that the resident curator
will be undertaking in preserving and restoring one of my Assembly Districts most important historic sites.

The Susan B. Anthony House is located at 2835 State Route 29 in Greenwich. Anthony lived in the house which her father
builtfrom 1832 to 1839, when her family lost everything in the 1839 financial crash. Today, the building's wood trim is rotting,
paint is peeling from the bricks, and several windows are broken and open to the air. The foundation and walls have many large
holes. Although New York State purchased the building when it went into foreclosure in 2006and it was named to the National
Register of Historic Places in 2007the home has remained empty and neglected. In rural Washington County, however, local
leaders have been engaging in coupled historic preservation and economic development efforts for the past several years.
Rehabilitating the Susan B. Anthony House for tours and visits fits well within these efforts, as drawing tourists and local residents
to the home in the rural hamlet of Battenville will generate economic activity within the surrounding villages of Greenwich,
Schuylerville, and Salem as well as the cities of Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls.

$125,000 will invaluably support the work of OPRHPs resident curator, once he or she has been selected through the offices
current RFP process. The Susan B. Anthony House is an untapped resource for Washington Countys heritage tourism industry,
and will contribute significantly to the countys continued economic development efforts. We appreciate your consideration of this
important addition to our budget proposal.

Sincerely,

Carrie Woerner Steve Englebright
