What was the Temperance Movement?

The Temperance Movement started in the 1800s and
slowly gained more followers. By the early 1900s there were
millions of people in the United States that supported it. This
group of people who supported the temperance movement
wanted to make the drinking and selling of alcohol illegal in
America.
Women reformers (people looking for change) were the
major force that was fighting for laws against alcohol. Many
wives and mothers felt that alcohol was a danger to their
families. Many times, drinking caused violence in the house.
Many people also believed that using alcohol increased crime
in America.
