The Indian plastics industry made a
promising beginning in 1957 with the
production of polystyrene. Thereafter,
significant progress has been made, and the
industry has grown and diversified rapidly.
The industry spans the country and hosts
more than 2,000 exporters. It employs about,
4 million people and comprises more than
30,000 processing units, 85-90 per cent of
which are small and medium-sized
enterprises,
India ranks third globally based on plastic
consumption, Demand for plastics in the
country is expected to double to 20 milion
metric tonnes (MMT) by 2020.
STEADY GROWTH IN EXPORTS
India is one of the most promising exporters
cof plastics among developing countries, The
plastic industry produces and exports a
Wide range of raw materials, plastic-moulded
extruded goods, polyester fims, laminates,
mouidedisoft luggage items, wrting
instruments, plastic woven sacks and bags,
polyvinyl chloride (PVC), leather cloth and
sheeting, packaging, consumer goods,
sanitary fitings, electrical accessories,
laboratory/medical surgical ware, tarpaulins,
laminates, fishnets, travel ware, and others.
Demand from original equipment
manufacturers (OEMs) has led to producers
focusing more on delivering products
customised in ine with end-user needs
Moreover, the Indian plastics industry has
started manufacturing specific items to meet,
customer requirements, Design, style, and
pattern are set based on the requirements of
customers in export markets.
In 2013-14, plastic raw materials accounted
for 38.6 per cent (USS 3.1 billion) of overall
plastics exports, followed by value-added
plastic product exports (61.4 per cent; USS
49 billion)

DESTINATIONS

US$ 7.9 billion in 2013-14, are expected
to cross US$ 9.5 billion in 2015-16.
= The value of Indian plastics exports has
Increased at a CAGR of 20.5 per cent
between 2009-10 and 2013-14.

include China, Germany, Italy, Turkey,
the UAE, the UK and the US.

ADVANTAGE INDIA
= The Indian plastics industry offers excellent potential in
terms of capacity, infrastructure and cheap labour
availabilty. Itis supported by a large number of polymer
producers, and plastic process machinery and mould
manufacturers in the country.
= Among the industry's major strengths is the availability
cf raw materials in the country. Thus, plastic processors
do not have to depend on imports. These raw materials,
including polypropylene, high-density polyethylene, low-
density polyethylene and PVC, are manufactured
domestically.

PLASTICS EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCIL
‘The Plastics Export Promotion Council (PLEXCONCIL) is,
the apex government body responsible for the promotion of
plastic exports, PLEXCONCIL members comprise large-
‘Imedium-/small-scale manufacturers and exporters. The
council supports exporters by participating in intemational
trade fairs, exploring new markets, organising buyer- seller
meets both in India and overseas, and engaging in through
various other promotion and need- based activities. The
‘council acts as an interface between the exporting
‘community and the Government of India; sponsors
delegations to target markets; and invites business
delegations from overseas to India. It actively organises
events such as exhibitions, fairs and
conferences/workshops to promote the Indian plastics
industry at national and international levels.
