ACTIVITY # 5
BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINERING
THEVENINS THEOREM
OBJECTIVE:
1. To verify Thevenins Theorem principle
PROCEDURE: PART 1
CALCULATIONS:
a. Insert the measured resistor values and calculate the Thevenin voltage and
resistance for the network to the left of points a a .
FIGURE 8.1
Eth = 26.666V
Rth = 26.6667
-Ia (R1 + RA) + E1 = 0
Ia(10 +20 ) = 40
Ia = 1.3333 Amp
Ro = 20 + (10)(20) / (10 +20)
Ro = 26.6667
-Vo + Ia(R3) = 0
Vo = (1.3333)(20)
Vo= 26.666 V
b. Insert the values obtained in ( a ) in the schematic of figure 8.1 and calculate IL
FIGURE 8.
-IL(Ro +RL ) + Vo = 0
IL= 26.666V / (26.6667 + 35 )
IL = .4324 Amp
c. Calculate the current IL in the original network of Figure 8.1 using series parallel
techniques ( use measured resistor values). Compare to the result of ( b )
d. Construct the network of Figure 8.1 and measure the voltage VL. Calculate the
current IL and compare to the result of ( b ).
FIGURE 8.3
Rth = 26.667
g. Determine Eth by constructing the network of Figure 8.4 and measuring the open-
circuit voltage between points a-a.
FIGURE 8.4
How does this value compare to the result of (a)? Determine the present
difference using an equation similar to that appearing in (e).
% difference= 0
h. Construct the network of Figure 8.5 and set the values obtained for Eth and R th in
( e ) and (f), respectively. Use the ohmmeter section of your meters to set the
potentiometer property. Then measure the voltage VL and calculate the current IL.
0-1 kohm
Figure 8.5 `
VL (measured)= 12V
IL( calculated from VL ) = .3428 Amp
Compute the percent difference between levels of IL from ( b) and the above
using
% difference = 0 %
