END OF CHAPTER 1

1. In DC generators, the series field winding has low resistance while the shunt field winding
has high resistance. Why?
6 marks
The series field winding has low resistance while the hunt field winding has high
resistance because series field winding takes the full load current of the generator, so it
require only a few turn to produce the required magnetic field and so the resistance is
lower. While, the shunt resistance is having full load voltage across it. So it required a
large number of turn for desired emf. That why shunt field winding has high resistance.

2.What factors affect the emf generated in a DC generator?

6 marks
Speed of conductor crossing a magnetic field.
Density of the magnetic field.
The number of conductor were rotating in magnetic field.

3 .a shunt generator 50kw, 120 V has an armature resistance, Ra = 0.09 ohm, the shunt field
resistance, Rsh = 45 ohm, the speed of rotation = 900 rpm and the rotation , total of
power loss, Pr = 5KW. Supply to the load on the generator terminal voltage rating. Specify

i. Emf generated by armature,

Eg = Vt +IaRa Ia = Ish + IL Ish = V / Rsh IL = PL / V

=120 + (419.34 x 0.09) = 2.67 + 416.67 = 120 / 45 = 50kw / 120
=157.4 = 419.34A = 2.67A =416.67A

ii. Rated current Pg = Eg x Ia

Ia = 50kw / 157.4
= 317.66A
iii. The efficiency of the generator

% = (Pout / Pin) x 100 Pin = Pout + power loss

= (50kw / 55kw) x 100 = 50kw + 5kw
= 90.9% = 55kw
