on
VLMI initiatives
at
Gogte Institute of
Technology Belagavi

Submitted By
Team VLMI@GIT Belagavi.
Executive Summary:
Japan international cooperation agency ( JICA), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) ,
Visionary Laghu Udyog Mitra Mandal India , Belgaum Foundry Cluster and Gogte Institute
of Tecchnology Belagavi signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to impart industry
oriented learnings to its learners. As a part of this initiative, the institute has constituted team
of six faculty from mechanical and management department to implement the program for
mechanical engineering students. In the first and second year all students of engineering
should undergo training on craftsmanship, basics of factory and factory language. Being the
first college in India for providing such a platform, KLS GIT has begun its journey this year
by imparting education to their Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students.
The first and second semester students were divided into eight batches consisting 30
students each. Sessions were held in a such a way that neither their lab nor their theory
classes are affected.. These sessions were conducted in the war room created for VLMI
learnings. The pedagogy included following::
1. Describing the importance of VLMI to students.
2. Conducting observation skills training theoretically.
3. Requesting students to observe safety and cleanliness in the specified place in the
premises.
4. Asking students to prepare the labels on safety and cleanliness.
5. Teaching the method of how to write labels
6. Asking students to correct labels and present the same.
7. Feedback from faculty and concluding the session with Yo-One.
Findings and feedbacks:
Students overwhelmed with practical inputs.. It has helped them to get participate in
team learning. They were also eager to know the future sessions. Their observation on the
given premises for safety and cleanliness are also eye openers for improvement in the
premises.
Introduction:
Dynamics of Indian industry has hastened their pace to be competitive in the global
marketplace. The need of innovation creativity and quality with lean in the heart changed the
design thinking of entrepreneurs. However, their pessimism towards academic output has
increased due to skill gaps. To fill this vacuum, Japan international cooperation agency (
JICA), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) , Visionary Laghu Udyog Mitra Mandal India ,
Belgaum foundry cluster and Gogte institute of technology Belagavi signed memorandum of
understanding (MoU) to impart industry oriented learnings.

Stakeholders:
The program involves Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students, VLMI faculty team
of KLS GIT, mentors from industry and support of KLS management.

Methodology and Pedagogy:

The curriculum is developed in consultation with Mr. C. S. Patel Anand Group, faculty of
KLS GIT and Industry mentors from the Belgaum industrial area. This curriculum is
designed to offer elective course in Mechanical Engineering. In the first and second year
students should undergo basic course like observation skills, craftsmanship to factory, factory
language, introduction to factory and time management.
The pedagogical tools used in facilitating this electives are
a. Lecturing
b. Case study
c. Activities
d. Prsentation and
e. feedback

Report on observation skill session:

Faculty team of KLS GIT initiated learning process by imparting observation skills to first
and second year students of Mechanical Engineering. These students are divided into eight
groups namely: A, B, C, D, E, F. G and H. Each group consisted 30 students.
The detailed instructional design and implementation is given below

Findings on label making:

Students have constructed their own sentences without applying 4W1H concept. After
teaching about the importance of 4W1H students were able to write the label in correct order.
The feedback on team orientation and importance of date and time in the label making helped
the students aware about the importance of labelling and observation overall. The recent
industrial accidents happened in Belgavi illustration has convinced them to know the
importance of this activity.

Feedback.
1. Students participated in the team learning
2. They understood the industry orientation and institute effort in this regards.
3. Students are curious about future sessions
4. Faculty executed the demonstrations and explained the need of creation of good
instructional material and challenges of training sessions.
5. Stakeholders came to know about safety and cleanliness issues in the institute
premises.
