Lesson Plan: Pirate Patterns

Grade: Kindergarten Unit: Patterns and Relations

Topic: Pirate Patterns Date: Thursday, Jan. 26th 17
Length of Lesson: 30 min. Subject: Early Numeracy
General Learning Patterns and Relations: Use patterns to describe the world and to solve
Outcomes problems.

Specific Learning The child:

Outcomes o demonstrates an understanding of repeating patterns (two or three
elements) by:
identifying
reproducing
extending
creating patterns using manipulatives, sounds and actions. [C,
CN, PS, V]

Instructional - To be able to create their own ABB.

Objectives
Lesson Focus - What are repeating patterns?
Question and Key - How can we reproduce repeating patterns?
Questions - What is an ABB pattern?

Materials - 17 strips of blue construction paper

- About 100 cut-outs of different pirate images (pirate, parrot, pirate hat,
pirate ship, treasure chest etc.)
- 17 glue sticks
- 17 white pencil crayons
- Some erasers
- A pirate picture book from the classroom
- 2 different coloured shapes/patterns from the math tubs

Resources - Pirate pattern activity from Mrs. Terri Williamson

Procedure
Introduction 1 Get the class to take a seat at the carpet area after having finished quiet time.
(15 min.) Get the start student of the day to go through the afternoon schedule.

2 Read a Pirate story to the class.

3 Begin introducing the pattern activity and reminding the students about
patterns:
a Do a clap and stomp repeating pattern and get the students to
do the same. Ask them what kind of pattern this is (AB).

b Do a clap and stop stomp repeating pattern and get the

students to do the same. Ask them what kind of pattern this
would be (ABB).
c Finally using two different shapes from the math tubs, get
the students to help you come up with an ABB pattern.
Remind the students that the first set of 3 in the pattern is
called the core.
4 Then explain the table work activity to the students. Explain that they
have been given images and a strip of paper. They are going to glue
down the different images to make a repeating ABB pattern (write on
white board). The images they choose to use are up to them but they
have to make an ABB pattern and their pattern has to fill the entire
length of the strip. After they glue the images down, they need to write
ABB underneath their pattern before they have it checked using white
pencil crayon.
5 Write the steps the students are to carry out down on the mini white
board and go over these with them:
a Name on back
b Glue down pattern
c Write ABB underneath their pattern
d Get it checked
6 Once having reviewed all of the steps, ask the star of the day to choose
table groups to go up and to get started.
Body of Lesson 1. As the students work, circulate amongst them and observe them work.
(28 min.) Assist those students that need further help and make sure they are
following the steps. Provide extra whole class instruction as is
needed.
Closure 1 As students finish, they will bring you their work. Ensure that they have
(2 min.) followed the steps and correctly made an ABB pattern and labeled it. If needed
ask them to correct their work. Write down how well the students were able to
make their pattern without assistance on the strips. When students are done
they can go to centers.

Sponge Activity N/A - As students finish they will transition to centers.

Assessment Observational: Observe students in their ability to follow the instructions and to make
an ABB pattern with little help. Provide some guidance and additional directions to
those students who need more help and time with this. Record feedback on how well
students could make their pattern on their own on the individual strips.

Specific Learner Some students will need some extra help with following instructions and
Considerations remaining on task. Remind these students to get back on task as needed. Some
and Adaptations students will also need some extra help with coming up with their ABB pattern
and with writing ABB underneath their pattern. Be prepared for this and provide
guidance where needed.
